Yeah, that's textbook of how they go. I had to sell my 1967 SG Standard last year to pay bills, it was the one with the crazy skinny neck. Amazed me that THAT neck joint never went, but it never did. I miss that guitar, I have a Samick copy that is pretty cool but there is nothing like the real thing!

I've never liked having to break a guitar to fix it right. I had to break the headstock off of
my Junior when I got it. Ended up with the guitar, the headstock, and 7 pieces of wood.
I got it together though, it holds tune and plays great.

I've heard great things about them. I know my next Suhr will definitely have them.ElToro wrote:I have a few guitars with stainless steel frets. I gotta tell you guys, it's an amazing upgrade. I don't think I will buy many guitars without them in the future...

I bought this today. I'm adding a pearloid guard, chrome p/u ring, graphite saddles and having it leveled to a 16 degree radius with stainless steel jumbo frets...

What's the model name of that? SG Junior? Never seen one with a 'bucker (unless it was routed for one).ElToro wrote:I bought this today. I'm adding a pearloid guard, chrome p/u ring, graphite saddles and having it leveled to a 16 degree radius with stainless steel jumbo frets...

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
It's an SG X I believe, the pickguard and 24 frets make me think this.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I have a confession to make. Been playing for over 25 years, and I've never done any setup work on my guitars... the most technical I got was changing strings. I finally said fuck it, I need to be able to do this. So yesterday I grabbed one of my Ibanezes, changed to a new string gauge, adjusted the action and set the intonation. Yeah, I know, big fuckin' deal... for me it is. Next I'm going to figure out how to adjust the truss rod, but I'm going to use a cheapo to experiment on.
The big reason I decided to do this is I have a bunch of guitars, and the shop in town never has enough time to do setups for me. It'll save me a good chunk of money as well. Any suggestions on particular tools I should add to my toolbox?

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
What kind of bridges do your guitars have? For locking trems you need a set of hex wrenches, metric for Floyds. A good set of clippers and a string winder. You could buy the fancy $15 string winder with clipper built in, or you can buy a $2 string winder and a $2 cheap pliers with clipper. That's the route I went.Space Bear wrote:I have a confession to make. With a Floyd if it's recessed, stick an old 9v battery or a pencil under the back of the bridge before you take the strings off, it makews it take less time to string it back up and bring it back into tune. If you let the bridge fall back into the recess it'll take forever to bring it up and get it into tune.
There are great tutorials all over the internet. You could probably go to Youtube and enter "Intonate ________ model guitar" (be specific) and get dozens of tutorials for that particular axe, or enter the type of bridge for even more choices. Same for truss rod adjustments or pretty much any task you want to do.
I basically stick to intonation, action and truss rod adjustments, which are pretty tied together. I learned from Guitar Player Magazine 30 years ago and have never paid for a setup since. I've gotten some for free when buying new guitars, but never had to pay outright.
Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Only guitar I ever broke was when my gf came home after being missing foir 2 days. I thought I recognized the car that dropped her off and she came in and said "Oh, I've been fucking Ronnie, your brother's best friend".Jack Sabbath wrote:I've never liked having to break a guitar to fix it right. I WAS playing the '67 SG when she told me that. I was fucking pissed, but smart enough to put the SG down, pick up an Epi Melody Maker copy, and smash that! It was either her or something - well the headstock broke off, the neck broke at the body joint, and the body broke diagonally in two.
Well I threw the pieces in a box - couldn't throw it away. A couple months later a bass player I knew came by, we were going to jam. He saw the pieces in the box and said "I can fix that if you want". I couldn't believe it but said, "sure, if you think you can".
Couple weeks later, he brought it back to me in one piece, about 2 pounds heavier and with a gray epoxy lightning bolt across the body! Played like a dream, better sustain than before - didn't sound as warm, but sounded good! It's amazing what can be fixed!

Does anyone have info comparing Eminence speakers to the speakers they are supposedly cloning? I dig Eminence and would like to find a good clone of a G12H or G12M Celestion Greenback.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
A couple of my guitars were stolen recently (my G&L Strat and one of my Taylors) so I replaced them. I picked up a late 90's Tele with Lindys and Schallers and another cheapie Taylor.

I finished the paint job on a Strat I've been working on for a while as well. It's not as yellow as it looks in the pic. The lighting sucked. It's "Vintage Cream". It was a pawn shop US Strat I picked up for 250 bucks. A few mods and a paint job later and it's a sweet guitar.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Yeah, it sucked. I was just a tad pissed off, but, the upside was didn't have the guilt I usually have when I write a check for new gear. I like that Tele a whole lot more than I ever liked that G&L anyway, and I upgraded on the Taylor, so in the end, in a round about, squint your eyes kind of way, it was a win. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the cops will stumble across my stolen guitars in a pawn shop at some point, then it's a total win. I'm not holding my breath on that though.
Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I'd keep my eye on Craigslist too; the cops are not necessarily gonna do that but you can in a few minutes a day - well, Houstoin being big it might take a little longer. You can also set Ebay searches for a specific guitar so that it will tell you when one comes up. Although you might have to just say G&L and Taylor since the thief may not know the model name or may want to blur the issue.

It's more up to you to do the cop's work for them. Gear often goes through their 'system' without getting flagged.bane wrote:Yeah, it sucked. Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
It's a BIIIGGGGG town with a ton of pawn shops. I've pretty much written them off. I check in every pawn shop I go into, but I'm not really actively searching for them at this point. I sent out a mass email to all the local players I know and keep my eyes and ears open, but I'm reasonably certain I'll never see them again. One of the guys I play with got a stolen guitar back from the cops about 5 years down the line though, so, it's possible although highly unlikely. The G&L is sort of rare, you don't see that many of them, so it might turn up, but Taylors like the one I lost are a dime a dozen.Jack Sabbath wrote:It's more up to you to do the cop's work for them. You name, I have it... vintage strat, Floyd, Gibson TOM, stopbar, tele, pretty much one of everything. The TOM is going to be my next attempt. The adjustment screws are underneath the strings facing the bridge pickup, right? Seems like a difficult place to reach.lerxstcat wrote: What kind of bridges do your guitars have?
And am I seeing it correct on a Floyd, the lock you loosen to move the saddle is right below the string as it hits the bridge? Another strange design...
