ESPN reporting that Don Mattingly is taking over Joe Torre's gig with the Dodgers next year. Always loved Donnie Ballgame, one of those guys that you wonder what could have been if he had stayed healthy.

Mike Lowell is retiring at the end of the season. He has been a class act since he came to Boston. I hope the team does the right thing and gives him a huge send-off. It's not like there are a bunch of guys who were Red Sox World Series MVP's that are still around. Sunday October 3rd vs NYY on the last day of the season would be a perfect time to have Mike Lowell Day.

I would love to see the Marlins do something for Mikey, perhaps next season. He had a great run here, and was and still is a fan favorite. Class act, indeed.

Kill will appreciate these stats. Jeter is not clutch and Teixeira & Jeter do not deserve gold gloves:

1. Derek Jeter(notes) hasn’t been clutch in four years.
Derek Jeter has come up short in critical situations.
Nothing like taking a scythe to a sacred cow right off the bat. The same numbers that two years ago allowed us to show just how unclutch Alex Rodriguez had been prove the very same thing about Jeter.
A metric called Win Probability Added (WPA) goes plate appearance by plate appearance to see just how much a player helped or hurt his team’s chance of winning. Value is added for big plays at crucial moments. The numbers, good and bad, are added to make a composite. FanGraphs also calculates WPA/LI, which makes each plate appearance leverage neutral – meaning it puts every situation on an equal plane – and pops out a number. WPA minus WPA/LI gives you a good idea how much better a player produced in situations that added to his team’s chances of winning. The higher the number, the better.
Well, the last time Jeter’s total was in the positive was 2006. This year, he’s barely negative: minus-.09, according to FanGraphs’ Clutch score. In 2009, he was minus-.85, the year before that minus-.28 and minus-.17 prior to that.
Until this year, Jeter at least had produced in spite of his not-so-clutch hitting. This season has been a mess. And it’s easy to see why: Jeter can’t drive the ball anymore. He is hitting ground balls on 65.8 percent of his at-bats, far and away the most in the major leagues, with Elvis Andrus(notes) second at 60.4 percent. It’s the highest total in the majors since Luis Castillo(notes) slapped his way to 66.7 percent in 2007.
4. Mark Teixeira(notes) and Derek Jeter really need not win Gold Gloves this year.
Positive Yankees notes come later – promise – but in the meantime, can we please put an end to the myths that Teixeira and Jeter are great fielders?
FanGraphs uses two measures for defense: Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR) and Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). They purport to do the same thing, and they agree that Teixeira and Jeter are rather awful in the field. Among qualifying first basemen, Teixeira’s UZR is better than that of Troy Glaus(notes), Paul Konerko(notes), Ryan Howard(notes) and Prince Fielder(notes), which is to say he’s a couple bad plays shy of cadaver. And for those who get so jazzed over Teixeira’s ability to pick throws to first out of the dirt, his 18 scoops are the second fewest in the major leagues – and 30 fewer than Albert Pujols(notes).
Jeter’s is simpler: His minus-11 DRS is better than only that of Yuniesky Betancourt(notes) and Hanley Ramirez(notes). His minus-6.8 UZR is better than only that of the same two players. Betancourt and Ramirez should not be playing shortstop. Use the transitive property how you will.

Tom Tangoier and John Dewan did a run down on it two years ago. Yet the coaches still vote him as defensive wizard.
Unbelievable. Well....it's very believable. I'll say that Jeter is Gold Glove Short Stop for this. He fields like he's wearing a Gold Glove.

The thing is that as a hitter Jeter hasn't been even remotely clutch in 5 years and now he's just a slap hitter. And he is one of the worst fielding SS's in the league. And a month from now he'll get another gold glove and probably another silver slugger. Go figure... He's had a great career and all but he is still picking up awards like it's still 1999.killeverything wrote:The Gold Glove award unfortunately is like the All-Star game. John Schuerholz, Baseball's newest bitch:
"When they built that damn ballpark, we didn't have a prayer. They started printing money and hitting shorter home runs,’’ Atlanta president John Schuerholz on the emergence of the Phillies as an NL East power coinciding with the team’s move into Citizens Bank Park.
Hey fuckstick, they are able to afford free agents now BECAUSE they built that park. 120 straight sellouts while you can't draw flies to a team fighting for a playoff spot. Maybe you should have thought of that before you built that horrendous stadium the Braves play in. Or maybe Atlanta just sucks for any sport besides high school football. Enjoy the mudhole that the Phillies are going to stomp into your team this week.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
NEW YORK -- Baseball commissioner Bud Selig ruled out increased use of instant replay by umpires to review close calls during the postseason this year.
Selig said he discussed the matter with the special committee of managers, management and ownership he appointed in December.
"I brought the subject up, as I always do with everybody," Selig said at Yankee Stadium on Monday night. "I don't get the feeling that there's a lot of support for it, at least their conversations with me."
"We're analyzing things," Selig said. "Our committee said we need to study it more, maybe have a few more months of study. But from the numbers that I heard, of the controversial tough plays, they got something like 98 percent right."
Selig said the key issue for him is the delays that video reviews cause. He said there is no support for increased use of replay on the committee -- or any clamor for it from baseball executives.
"We'll continue to look at it. I'm not going to say no," he said. "Baseball is a game of pace, and there's no question it's a game of pace, and therefore one has to be very sensitive."
Bud is an idiot. He's an old man that does not quite understand the game needs replay. Once again Bud will wait for another "incident" during the playoffs/world series before reacting.
I heard him last night on the Yes Network. He mentioned the pace/rhythm of the game does not need a 3-4 minute break numerous times in a game for replay.
That is just a load of bullshit. If it takes that long to get a correct call, then the process is flawed.

The pace of the game? Baseball is a meandering, easygoing game. A few extra minutes to get a call right isn't going to make a damn bit of difference.

98% isn't good enough, especially when the calls they miss tend to be egregious. Most of the time when a call is missed it is blatant and would only take a few seconds for someone in the booth to overturn.
There are only two reasons they won't got to replay. Either they are afraid of pissing off the umps or they want the freedom to influence the umps to effect games. Which one is it Bud?

The Yankees honored George Steinbrenner last night before the game.
Among the past Yankees attending the ceremony was Torre and Mattingly. Both flew from the west coast on a day off and took a plane back to the west coast shortly after the ceremony.
The large monument for The Boss stands over 7 feet tall.

Agree with this, and agree that Selig is a fucking idiot. My god. Seriously, on most of these calls that replay would overturn, you can tell right about on the first camera view.
I fucking hate Bud Selig. He can't go soon enough. Bring in Condi Rice or GWB.

I hope so, he's the most overrated manager in recent memory and the phils have been fucking his team up latley. those idiots made a mistake by building a stadium the size of of yellowstone, If they get werth next year he'll hit 15 HR at best, Fuck I wish we could keep that fucker he fucking owned the braves tonight.WhiteHouseSubsAC wrote:I'd lay money that Torre is going to be managing the Mets next year.

I don't know, Werth doesn't hit short home runs. Did you see that walk-off the other night? 410 to dead center, and he's hit a few of them out there. Yeah, I'd love it if the Phils could keep him but now that he's retained Boras, forget it. The Dom Brown era starts in '11!!dtmfs wrote:I hope so, he's the most overrated manager in recent memory and the phils have been fucking his team up latley. those idiots made a mistake by building a stadium the size of of yellowstone, If they get werth next year he'll hit 15 HR at best, Fuck I wish we could keep that fucker he fucking owned the braves tonight.WhiteHouseSubsAC wrote:I'd lay money that Torre is going to be managing the Mets next year.

True, but I think should he go to the mets he'll start out like Bay, he's def got some power the one he crushed tonight and that walk off you mentioned were def not cheap. Halladay is kinda worrying me latley I hope the phils can clinch and rest all the vets. I'm looking forward to seeing what Dominic can do full time, but just in case they'd be smart to sign a solid cheap vet OFer.WhiteHouseSubsAC wrote: I don't know, Werth doesn't hit short home runs. And don't get me wrong I respect Cox I just hate the fucker, he's a HOF but man I've had enough of that asshole pitching a fit when his pitchers don't get every call, same goes for their Homer announcers, those fuckers are just behind hawk harrolson as far as Homers go.
Anyhow anyone know where Werths likley destination will be? Yanks, cubs, mets, or dodgers are the 4 that come to mind...and Boston.

Cubs don't need another right handed bat. I want Dunn.dtmfs wrote:

There has been some talk of him being the Angels #2 target this off-season, with Crawford being the obvious #1. I just don't see it happening though.

Every single Cubs fan I tell that to needs to be shown how stunning Dunn's OBP and runs scored have been the last ten years. Seriously, D-Lee is gone...Dunn would more than make up the defensive gap between himself and Lee with his bat.tin00can wrote:johnk5150 wrote:Cubs don't need another right handed bat. Yeah, Adam Dunn would be good for you guys.
Werth started out in LA, I think the Angels would be a good choice for him. Better start loading up the Brinks trucks now, though.
