You name, I have it... vintage strat, Floyd, Gibson TOM, stopbar, tele, pretty much one of everything. The TOM is going to be my next attempt. The adjustment screws are underneath the strings facing the bridge pickup, right? Seems like a difficult place to reach.

And am I seeing it correct on a Floyd, the lock you loosen to move the saddle is right below the string as it hits the bridge? Another strange design...
Yes it is, I don't really like that design but it's what we have to deal with. You have to guesstimate and lock it down because if you try and tune up the string without doing that the string itself tensioning up can pull the saddle out of place. But once it's done it tends to stay done.

For the tunomatic, just get a set of jeweler's screwdrivers, they are smal enough to get in there. You can buy a cheap set at most dollar stores, they will be fine as long as you keep the bridge parts clean and they dont rust up or crud up. I have found that on tunomatics ytou really don't have to adjust much if you're going from 9-42 to 10-46 or a minimal change. Of course a Floyd gauge change usually causes you to have to adjust the trem springs, but not always the saddles, again if they are close in gauge.

I'm not sure if Strats are USA or metric, but you can go to Home Depot and get the hex sets that are like a Swiss Army knife style for $5-6 each. I have a metric and a USA and they are a lot easier to find in an accessory case on a dark stage than individual ones are. The key ring type are even cheaper but I find them harder to use without pulling them out of the springs that hold them, and then you end up losing them. Cheap investment, you'll save a fortune if you have a bunch of guitars and it's satisfying to know you can do it yourself!

One step ahead of ya... I picked up a full set of both USA and metric hex wrenches yesterday. Probably way more than I'll ever use, but now there's no way I won't have the right size. All of my setup work will be in my "shop" so I don't need anything for stage use at this time. But man oh man, do I have a shit-ton of guitars to set up...

I ordered my setup tools from Stewmac

Understring Radius Gauges
String Action Gauge
Tremolo Spring Installer

These will go with my hex wrench set and the jeweler's tools on the way from Amazon. About $100 in all, I should now be able to do everything I need other than truss rod adjusment. Gotta take my time learning that before I start tweaking the neck on a $2,000 axe.

Just stick to 1/8 turn at a time in the correct direction and you really can't go wrong assuming the truss rod works. Read a tutorial on the subject, of course, or watch one on Youtube. Pretty simple, nothing to be afraid of.

When you start cutting or shaving wood, that's when you better know WTF you are doing, because generally speaking it's a lot harder to put wood back than it is to take it off!

Believe me, I'll be reading and watching plenty before I go a-truss roddin'. My first victim is expendable, a Ravenwest PRS copy I bought almost 10 years ago (actually on 9/11!). I'm planning to pretty much take it apart and put it back together so I can do everything with it.

Crap, I've gotta look into soldering irons. What's the best way to go for the application? Are there any cool ones that run on batteries and are easy to use? I guess they're all easy... another bridge I've never crossed in my life. I was far too sheltered these first 39 years.

Regarding your advice about cutting into wood, not a chance. I know better than to get anywhere near that.

I couldn't recommend anything special as far as soldering irons, I have a cheap 30-watt Radio Shack soldering gun. Not recommending that, I don't really use it much, but it works. Not battery-powered though.

I bet that Ravenwest is a pretty decent guitar. I have a Hamer PRS copy which is also Korean made and it's pretty nice. I'd never buy a real PRS because the neck joint is clunky for a $3,000 guitar, but for a few hundred
It's nice and kinda Gibsony. I look at it like a 22-fret with great access rather than a 24-fret with shitty access.

If you want the tome on those Korean guitars to pop, remove the finish and then change the pots/caps. You'll be amazed!

I've got a dual wattage iron that works really well. You can switch it between 15 and 30 watts, so it works well for circuit board work at 15 watts and general stuff at 30. I don't remember where I got it, probably Radio Shack. Almost everything I've ever had to do on a guitar works fine at 30 watts. It can be a bitch getting the plate hot enough when you're soldering a ground to the springs bar with that low wattage, that particular connection would be easier with something like a 40 watt gun, but for everything else it works just fine.

You know my Hamer is a factory 2nd because there are pores in the paintjob on the back side and it sounds pretty nice, especially for cheap Duncan Designed pickups. I paid $149 for it in 2001 and like it enough that I've kept it while selling probably 50 other guitars since then. Of course it's also a 2nd so I wouldn't get much for it - but it's DAMN nice for a beater, they were like $700 new.

Check out something like the Weller WLC100. Adjustable heat, lots of different tips available.
I believe they come with 2 tips. They'll do you for what little you'll use it,
you probably won't need any different tips.

Lots of Jasco+heat gun.

Those finishes ARE obscene...I have stripped a lot of guitars, and I think an Affinity tele was the worst. Never did get the sealer coat off that one!

There is a product called aircraft stripper. You find it in the section w/ auto body supplies. It is a brush on product and I have heard it works well for removing those poly finishes.
