Well, there was a rumor floated that they would sign Beltre and move Youk to left but I seriously doubt that would happen.

So, Beltre is gone and Youk to 3rd, I guess.
Wow. I heard 8 hours ago Beltre wanted to stay.
That would be the despicable Scott Boras trying to drive up Beltre's price by getting an offer from Boston that they had no intention of taking.

The Padres are run by fucking idiots. They just traded away their only legit crowd-drawing player for peanuts.

They got a pretty good package for him.

Casey Kelly is projected to be a #1 starter and could be ready for the majors by September. He is considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball and had been untouchable until now. Scouting report: http://www.soxprospects.com/players/kelly-casey.htm Rizzo is a solid defensive 1B who is probably more suited to the NL. Fuentes should be a good solid CF. And there is still a player to be named later. Not a bad package for a guy that SD was going to lose anyway. I was against the trade based on the rumored packaged, but this seems pretty fair considering we don't know how Gonzalez will do in Boston. I would have preferred they kept Kelly and found a way to put Ellsbury in the deal, but this is a decent package that is fair from all sides.

Sucks to see San Diego punt the season already though... might as well trade Bell.

That's what I was talking about with the Gonzalez trade. He's about the only draw the Padres had left. May as well cash in all your chips and walk away from the table.

Bud Black has to be wondering why he signed an extension with that cheap-ass team.

For as close as the Padres got last year on a shoestring budget, they should have been ADDING to the roster to make a run in the weak NL West, not trading their star player. Oh well.

Sources are saying the deal has fallen through.
There are more options than just todays deadline so I'm not sure why everybody is ready to call it dead.

Wow. That trade definitely reeks of something fishy. The Padres trade a guy with a 160 OPS+ for not one major league ready player??? Might it have something to do with Padres GM Jed Hoyer being a former Red Sox front office employee??? It's also being reported that the Padres will not field anymore offers for Gonzalez if this trade falls. It's like The Curt Schilling trade v2.0.

As per mlbtr.com
SUNDAY, 2:45pm: Odds are that Gonzalez won't wind up with the Red Sox, a source tells Morosi (via Twitter), though the reporter cautions that this could change quickly. Meanwhile, a rival executive told Rosenthal (via Twitter) that the possibility of a deal happening won't die unless the Red Sox turn around and sign Adrian Beltre. The third baseman may have lost a suitor this afternoon as it seems that the A's will turn their attention elsewhere.

Keeping my fingers crossed on this one, the Sox really do need this trade to compete next year, expecially cause Jayson Werth just signed with The Nationals. (they also gave him 7 years at $125 Million, another part of this deal that is not gonna help the Red Sox w/ Gonzalez, or Crawford, or any other power hitter)

One minute progress, next minute talks are off? Strange set of circumstances going on at the moment in the Adrian Gonzalez contract extension talks.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reported talks have broken off between the Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez' agent John Boggs and the deal is over.

There's still, however a major gray area in whether they're off for good or just off for the time being. Boggs has not responded to inquiries in the last half-hour.

One team source indicated that extension talks are off, but another source indicated they could easily get going again. There's an obvious gap in what the two sides think Gonzalez might be worth.

The other issue would be whether the Red Sox would still make a deal without the extension and there are differing opinions on that as well.

This could be quite a decision for Gonzalez because he may have to stay in San Diego and then not have a desirable situation like Boston available to him next winter. The White Sox also made a bid for Gonzalez, but when they couldn't make a deal, they opted for Adam Dunn.

The Padres also like the Boston deal in terms of talent they're getting back and don't like what they've heard from other teams on packages.

We'll try to piece this together during the afternoon and evening.

Laughing like crazy at the Werth to DC deal. They wouldn't pay Adam Dunn, but they'll give that guy SEVEN years? Good move.

OK, The Boston Globe has reported that the Gonzalez trade has gone through, but with no contract.
The Red Sox are still reporting that no progress has been made?

Report: Red Sox get Gonzalez
Permalink|Comments (54)Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff December 5, 2010 07:50 PM
After a day of many twists and turns, it appears the Red Sox have landed Adrian Gonzalez.

Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting the deal was done. More information as we get it.

UPDATE, 8:05 p.m.: It appears the deal was done without an extension. Look for the Red Sox to come to an agreement, but not announce it until after Opening Day. That would allow them to save millions on the luxury tax.

It is likely that the Red Sox and Gonzalez have an understanding of what the extension would be, otherwise it would be risky to trade three prospects for one year out of the first baseman. This is basically what happened with Josh Beckett last spring. There was a deal in place that was announced after Opening Day.

It also would allow them to make sure Gonzalez recovers from the surgery he had on his right (non-throwing) shoulder. But that is not a major issue.

He's really not much better of a hitter than Josh Willingham... who, last I checked was playing in Washington's outfield already. Insane.

John Heyman reports 8/167. After the Teix deal fell through, if Theo fucked this one up?

Me personally I was hoping to see Beltre back, plus I don't like Youkilis moving back to 3rd. Although Gonzalez a fucking stud in San Diego ( a pitcher's park ranking ) will kill it in Fenway.

Check this out:

Teammates describe Gonzalez as earnest and intense, but he embraces the unorthodox. When the Padres were mathematically eliminated early last September [2008], Gonzalez decided to take a strike against every pitcher he faced to see who was willing to challenge him. The exercise had to hurt him statistically, since he fell behind in counts, but it helped him predict how specific pitchers would approach him this season.

Wow. That makes me happy on the level of Manny Ramirez style hitting.

Wait for the PED allegations to soar when his power numbers climb drastically.

Lance Berkman is back in the NL with St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS—Lance Berkman is headed back to the NL Central, joining a team he knows really well.

The former Houston Astros slugger agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract with St. Louis on Saturday, solidifying the Cardinals' roster ahead of the upcoming winter meetings.

i think this gonzalez kid the sox just signed is begging for
Joba to send a fastball to his skull:

At his introductory press conference, Gonzalez jumped right into the rivalry. “I’m ready to beat the Yanks,” he said.

Before or after he gives up 8 earned runs?

Jayson Werth to Nationals for 7/126

Those are the red sox, so Joba must do that before and after giving up the 8 runs.
In an 8 run inning, the sox will bat around.
