If Boston wins a couple more championships, can Hollywood find another place to set its movies for awhile?

Report is that the Phils have traded Joe Blanton to the Red Sox. Not sure for who yet, maybe Dice-K?

Still reports out that this deal is done but local insiders say deal was discussed but will not happen.

So NY lost out on both Lee and Crawford this year. 0 for 2. I guess that means they'll try to do something to save face this off season. Greinke?
I love how baseball fans can not help but root against the Yankees. I guess the Yankees are doing something right.
Did the Yankees truly lose out on crawford or were the Yankees only concentrating on signing lee? I think you can answer that yourself.

So lee decides he does not want to be a Yankee! Fine. Bona Fortuna to lee and his family. Very happy the Yankees did not waste all that money on someone who did not want to play there in the first place.

Yankees FINALLY make their FA splash! They signed Russell Martin.

Good for the phillies and lee for the signing.
Now let's play the games between the white lines and see what happens.
Let's not forget, lee did lose 2 games in the NLCS :)

Seriously, Plan B for the Yankees can not come close to the impact of acquiring lee. No matter what pitcher they sign or trade for, the player will not be near the "name" of lee.

All I can hope for at this point is that Andy Pettitte decides to return for at least one more season.

I'm a casual fan at best, but could still appreciate the ridiculousness of signing Sabathia, Burnett, and Texeira in one off season. This is why NFL > MLB.

this coming from ESPN:
According to a source, the Rangers' highest offer was six years at $138 million, with some of that money deferred and a vesting option for a seventh year at $23 million.

The Yankees presented two offers to Lee -- one for six years at $23 million a year and one for seven years at a little over $21 million a year, sources told ESPNNewYork.com.

Lee ultimately agreed to a five-year, guaranteed $120 million contract with the Phillies, sources told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. The deal includes a $27.5 million option in the sixth year based on performance.

Why did they trade him away in the first place? Phuckheads.

Smart move, in retrospect. They got the trade pieces plus draft pick, and then they got Lee back.
Brilliant move.

1.The Phillies give up prospects for Lee.
2. Phillies trade Lee for prospects.
3. Phillies resign Lee and have the Seattle prospects as well.

Oh and MFY, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

John Dewan's Stat Of The Week

The Winner of the Cliff Lee Sweepstakes

December 14, 2010

The wait is over: on Monday night, Cliff Lee agreed to a five-year contract with the Yankees Rangers Phillies. There’s good reason Lee was so highly coveted this offseason, as his 2010 season was one of the most masterful seasons in baseball history. In 212 innings, Lee struck out 185 batters while unintentionally walking just 18. From the Bill James Handbook 2011:

American League SO/BB Ratio Leaderboard (2010)

Pitcher SO/BB
Cliff Lee 10.28
Jered Weaver 4.31
Shaun Marcum 3.84
James Shields 3.67
Francisco Liriano 3.47

Not only was Lee’s 10.28 ratio miles ahead of every other pitcher in baseball last year, but that figure also rates as the second-best season in baseball history.

Best Single Season SO/BB Ratio

Pitcher Season Strikeouts Walks Ratio
Bret Saberhagen 1994 143 13 11.0
Cliff Lee 2010 185 18 10.3
Curt Schilling 2002 316 33 9.6
Pedro Martinez 2000 284 32 8.9
Greg Maddux 1997 177 20 8.8
Note: since 1900, minimum one inning pitched per team game

Additionally, Cliff Lee joins a Phillies’ rotation which already features Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels, making the Phillies the popular favorites in the National League. Here are our projections for the Philly aces from the 2011 Handbook:

Phillies' Pitcher Projections for 2011

Pitcher ERA Wins Losses Innings Walks Strikeouts
Roy Halladay 3.16 18 9 245 38 190
Roy Oswalt 3.38 16 9 221 52 176
Cole Hamels 3.45 15 9 219 58 209
Cliff Lee 3.50 14 10 216 49 169

The Yankees are easy to poke fun at or make fun of. I knew many people would be anxious to make sure all Yankees fans knew that lee chose another team.
That's just fine. Have at it.

I welcome the challenge of facing that rotation in the WS in 2011.
If they are the best, then they say in order to be the best you have to beat the best.

Nice that you arrogantly assume the Yanks will be in the WS, even when they didn't make it this year.

And just looking at the teams usually in the mix in the AL, which teams got better and which teams got worse over the winter? I would say Tampa got worse, Texas got a little worse(certainly worse than they were down the stretch), NY got a little older, and Boston improved and will be healthy. It would be a stretch for anyone to pick NY to go to the World Series at this point.

I would say in the NL pencil in the Phillies for the NLCS and then who knows what happens from there, but it's going to be very tough to beat them with that rotation plus the lineup they have.

That's very surprising to me. I knew he wanted to be in Minnesota, and hates the spotlight. I figure in the AL East it would be glaring.....even in Canada.

Good points, Dude was pretty fucking sharp for his age too, MLB Network had a great interview with him and Costas not long ago that'll probably be re-aired tomorrow. Probably the greatest Athlete Iowa ever produced, at least of the major sports, Dan Gable and Cael Sanderson, not to mention Kurt Warner are up there too.

edited to add, oops Sanderson wasen't born in Iowa.

RIP. He was a great pitcher and man. 3 no-hitters, 12 one-hitters, 32 complete games in one season, and, in his prime, went to serve his country. Much respect.

MLB Network airing 1960 Game 7 World Series
Yankees vs Pirates

Bob Costas joins other panel members Bill Mazeroski, Dick Groat and Bobby Richardson to discuss a recently unearthed copy of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series

According to my tv listings program guide, the footage was found in the home of Bing Crosby.

I only caught 1 inning last night and the footage is amazing.
