Daily News' Meyers picks top 10 QBs of all time
Kind of in line with the common thinking around here....
Daily News NFL columnist Gary Myers gives you his top-10 quarterbacks
1. Joe Montana
Joe Cool was 4-0 in Super Bowls with 11 TDs and 0 INTs and is clear No. 1 for now.
2. Tom Brady
One more Super Bowl victory and talk will start whether he's best ever.
3. Johnny Unitas
He has the titles, the numbers - he set the standard.
4. Dan Marino
He was a dominant player but Don Shula never gave him a defense or running game.
5. John Elway
Had the classic ending to a great career going out with back-to-back championships.
6. Peyton Manning
Just one Super Bowl victory and 9-10 playoff record cost him two or three spots.
7. Troy Aikman
He didn't put up huge numbers except one: 3-0 in the Super Bowl
8. Brett Favre
Is finally retiring and has all the records. Was 1-1 in Super Bowl.
9. Terry Bradshaw
Won four rings, but just one piece on Hall of Fame team.
10. Otto Graham
Three-time NFL champ and member of 75th anniversary team.
My list of the all-time greats starts with Montana and I think it takes two more rings by Brady to surpass the 49er great as best of all time. Tied at four, I still give the edge to Joe Cool.
However, if Brady gets that fourth ring on Feb. 6 in Dallas in Super Bowl XLV, then Brady backers will have a legitimate argument. If he gets a fifth ring - he's still in his prime years at 33 - the argument is over.
"He's a top five quarterback," said former Cowboys vice president Gil Brandt. "How far you want to push the envelope, I don't know. As far as I'm concerned, you could put him No. 1 and I wouldn't object."
Clearly, he has surpassed Peyton Manning, his main rival. For now, let's compare Montana and Brady, who have similar playing styles with very high football IQs.

Re: Daily News' Meyers picks top 10 QBs of all time
That list is pretty good. Montana is clearly #1 and in a class all by himself. All the other guys basically belong in groupings, and they seem to be pretty much where most people I know would rank them give or take a spot or two up or down.
The thing that makes rating QBs difficult is that the game has changed so much over the years. It's really hard to compare someone like Otto Graham to Bret Favre because of all the rule changes. I think football needs to be broken down by era when comparing the greats into something like Pre-SB era, Superbowl I - early 90's, and Salary Cap era. Maybe it needs even more refinement than that, but it's a starting point. So the early QBs are probably Unitas-Graham-Starr-Jurgenson-Gabriel. The 70's & 80's guys are Montana-Elway-Marino-Bradshaw-Staubach. And the modern QBs would go something like Brady-Manning-Favre-Aikman and then probably Warner or Brees.

clearly this daily news reporter is having a love affair
with Manning.
no way Manning should be ahead Aikman.
Troy was 3-0 in The Super Bowl.
Manning can not say that.
Montana has to be #1. Someday Brady could take that spot, but he will have to win at least 2 more SB's to earn the #1 spot.

Re: Daily News' Meyers picks top 10 QBs of all time
Troy Aikman winning 3 SBs doesn't make him a better QB than Manning. As much as I hate Pee13, Manning is clearly a better QB than Aikman was, except for the playoffs. Do you think Terry Bradshaw, as great as he was, should be higher than Manning?Machado wrote:clearly this daily news reporter is having a love affair

The guy was pulled over and blew a .31 like two days before he was supposed to start representing the state of Illinois regarding highway safety. All those Bears could drink. Kevin Butler had 3 DUIs in the CITY. Do you know what you have to do to even be pulled over in downtown Chicago?HMJ wrote:1. Jim McMahon

You are re-emphasizing my original point. God damn. well aren't the playoffs and how many times a QB wins factor into the equation?
IMO, Bradshaw is better than Manning
4-0 in the SB kid. i dislike the steelers and i still have to give Bradshaw credit for being a winner

Aikman and Bradshaw should be ranked higher than Manning.
And where the fuck is Bart Starr?

Classic. My wife was waiting tables at Kincaids when Bob Avelini was cut off. He became all beligerent screming he'd be back. He stumbled out of the bar, grabbed a golf club from his car and promptly smashed the front windows out of McGees 4 blocks north of the place that cut him off.NeverSurrender wrote:In the town i live in. Granted the bars look similar (I suppose), but that's kind of scary knowing guys are out driving around that fucked up.

The media is in love with Manning, even though his stats in the playoffs are less than .500 and in seven of his 11 playoff seasons, he's been gone after one game
No excuse to have both Bradshaw and Aikman ranked lower than Manning.

Re: Daily News' Meyers picks top 10 QBs of all time
I agree. That list is pretty close, but I think Aikman is over ranked there. Aikman was a very good QB, but he's one of those "the sum is better than the parts" guys IMO. I'd say the same for Bradshaw. I can think of two or three guys that aren't on that list at all that I think should rank higher.WTF wrote: Troy Aikman winning 3 SBs doesn't make him a better QB than Manning.
