The real question is: How many more times can Joba be moved around before he blows out his arm and ends up needing Tommy John surgery?
I question Joba's work ethic. I wonder how much knowledge he has absorbed while sitting next to the greatest closer of all-time?

I really don't believe the Yankees will ask Joba to start again, unless multiple starting pitchers become injured.

*BUMP*

Oakland announced the Grant Balfour signing. To clear space on their roster, the A's designated RHP Clay Mortensen for assignment.

The Tigers officially signed RHP Brad Penny to a 1-year deal worth $3M. (That's only about $10,000 per pound.) Penny can also earn $3M in incentives. link To clear a space on their roster, Detroit designated RHP Armando Galarraga for assignment, just one day after they reached a 1-year, $2.3M deal to avoid arbitration.

C Gregg Zaun agreed to a minor league deal with the Padres.
RHP Guillermo Mota signed a minor league deal with San Francisco.

The White Sox claimed RHP Philip Humber off waivers from the A's, making Chicago his third organization this winter.

SS Stephen Drew agreed to a 2-year, $13.75M deal with the Diamondbacks to buy out his final two years of arbitration.

LHP Sean Marshall signed a 2-year, $4.7M extension with the Cubs, buying out his two remaining years of arbitration.

OF Rajai Davis agreed to a 2-year, $5.25M deal, plus a $3M 2013 club option, with the Blue Jays. The deal buys out his final two years of arbitration.

MotherFUCK the Rays have been getting raped!

Marlins have signed all current players to deals, avoiding arbitration from everyone available. Yay!
This Saturday, we're going to Roger Dean to get our ST tix. The OFFICIAL kickoff to baseball in this household. We stand in line forever, but we like talking to fans, and fans of the other teams, just talking baseball. It's a good time. I don't know about y'all, but I've been jonesing like a mofo.

Yep.

I've really got nothin', so here's MLBN's top 10 managers right now.

1 Francona
2 Scioscia
3 Gardenhire
4 Manuel
5 LaRussa
6 Bochy
7 Baker
8 Showalter
9 Black
10 Girardi

Dusty Baker? Are you fucking kidding me? Dusty Baker also has a negative value. There's another sample of the Rays getting raped. I'm surprised that Maddon isn't on the list. Who I believe is a better manager than LaRussa and Girardi.

Think of the tremendously talented teams that LaRussa has had. He's only won it all twice against a Giants team half on the DL, and a Tigers team that were shocked to be there. Other than that his teams get killed. I guess you have to factor in managing drunk. That has to be a challenge....

They also had Guillen as an honorable mention. What? A manager who is anti-plate patience.....how did getting Nick Swisher away from that work out NY?

Kill-
MLB Network is biased and they will create a list to get some press, to begin the water cooler talk, etc...
Watch them create another list before the season starts and compare how similar the names are. More than likely the names will be very different.

The only positives about MLB Network is the amount of "Live games" they air during the regular season, the classic MLB games on the network and having Costas do play by play occasionally during the season.

Dusty Baker has helped hundreds young of pitchers get to the majors.

By blowing out the arms of the pitchers he already had on his staff.

#yankees agree to terms with andruw jones for $2 mil plus $1.2 mil in performance bonuses

They seem to love getting players 5 years past their prime. Although for a fifth outfielder who had a 931OPS against lefties last year.....you really can't fault them for the deal.

Don't make me pull a Clemens and send a heater up and in on you

A. Jones should be a nice fit, as long as he understands his role and does not try to disrupt the team chemistry.
Compared to Marcus Thames from last season, Jones is a defensive upgrade indeed.

WTF is with Cashman?
NEW YORK -- Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he did not want to sign Rafael Soriano because he didn't feel paying closer money to the team's setup man made sense. And, in the end, Cashman said he did not participate in negotiations with Soriano's agent, Scott Boras.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman talks about how he disagrees with the signing of Rafael Soriano.
"I didn't recommend [the deal]," Cashman said after the team officially introduced Soriano as its eighth-inning man in front of closer Mariano Rivera.

To Pettitte
"Being from Texas and having to be in New York for six months out of the year can be hard because he has kids and he's missing important time with them," Cashman said, according to the paper. "He's opting not to play right now but that might change, it might not. I told him, ‘Don't Brett Favre us. You got to be all in and fully dedicated to play.' Do I need him? I need him, but I don't want him to play if his heart's not in it."

Did any of this really need to be said?

I think that Jones was a good pickup for a fifth.

Aside from the pay and two opt-out clauses. Cashman didn't want to give up the first round draft pick, which ironically went to Boston when Beltre signed with Texas. 8)

I think Pettite will be back, especially if the rotation falters at all. They can announce it on the score board like they did with Clemens half-assed return.

Reporter: Roger Clemens returned to the Yankees.

John Dewan's Stat Of The Week

Top Pitching Performances of 2010

January 20, 2011

The 2010 season was dubbed “The Year of the Pitcher”, thanks in large part to the six no-hitters (including two perfect games and Roy Halladay’s postseason gem).

Bill James devised “Game Score”, a metric to rate a pitcher’s dominance in a given start. A Game Score of 65 earns the designation “Gem” as a well-pitched game. The highest Game Score in recent history was 105, achieved by Kerry Wood in a 20-strikeout one-hitter in 1998.

From the 2011 Bill James Handbook, here are the top Game Scores of 2010:

Pitcher Date Opp IP H R ER BB SO Game Score
Brandon Morrow, Sea 8/8 TB 9.0 1 0 0 2 17 100
Roy Halladay, Phi 5/29 Fla 9.0 0 0 0 0 11 98
Matt Cain, SF 5/28 Ari 9.0 1 0 0 0 9 94
Dallas Braden, Oak 5/9 TB 9.0 0 0 0 0 6 93
Johnny Cueto, Cin 5/11 Pit 9.0 1 0 0 0 8 93
Travis Wood, Cin 7/10 Phi 9.0 1 0 0 0 8 93
Matt Garza, TB 7/26 Det 9.0 0 0 0 1 6 92
Ted Lilly, LAD 8/19 Col 9.0 2 0 0 2 11 92
Anibal Sanchez, Fla 7/29 SF 9.0 1 0 0 1 8 92
Five tied 91
Perhaps surprisingly, the top Game Score wasn’t a no-hitter, but Brandon Morrow’s 17-strikeout one-hitter on August 8. Morrow’s masterpiece reached the elite 100 Game Score, a level last reached by Randy Johnson in his 2004 perfect game.

The worst Game Score of 2010 belongs to Scott Kazmir, whose -8 Game Score on July 10 included 13 runs (all earned). Felix Hernandez had the highest average Game Score of any regular starter last season, at 63.4. Paul Maholm had the worst, at 44.1.

And they threw in Juan Rivera.

Fuck, Wells' contract is a beast. I understand the Angels wanted to get rid of Napoli because they have an inexplicable boner for Jeff Mathis as catcher (plus Wilson and Conger waiting on deck), and they wanted to get rid of Rivera and make Abreu the DH, but still...I can't find a way to spin this into a positive. I'd almost guarantee Wells will hit no more than 25 HR this year.

The only true upside I see is an OF of Wells, Bourjos (who is fucking awesome defensively, I love that kid) and Hunter is defensively pretty damn good.

The Jays GM, Alex Anthopoulos, is being hailed as a genius up here. He got a good return, and filled a couple of holes, for a guy with an albatross of a contract who's seemed to have had his best days, unless he regains his past form in a hurry.

It'll be interesting to see how the trade pans out. Napoli hit 26 HRs but he also strike out a ton and kills a lot of rallies. Rivera has horrible range in the OF but a decent arm. The Angels obviously didn't want Napoli because they didn't have a place for him.

The more I think about the trade, the more I...well, not like it, but dislike it less.

Yeah? Have to admit I'm pretty unfamiliar with the dude.

According to this writer, it all comes down to where the Jays plan on putting Bautista now:

Word is that he won't break camp with the Jays. They want to flip him to obtain more young assets or fill other needs.

The Jays flipped Napoli back to the AL West. He goes to Texas for Frank Francisco:

http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=351016

I don't get this move. Napoli provided pop, and depth to the Jays at C and 1B, both of which are question marks to some degree. Francisco, while sometimes dominant, is often injured and seemingly the type of guy you can find elsewhere (in their own system) for less.

Yankees have signed Bartolo Colon to a minor league deal.
He will earn $900,000 if he makes the big league club.

He will be joining the small group of starters that have a chance at the 4th
or 5th spot in the rotation.

Reportedly, the Red Sox and Blue Jays talked about a trade for Jose Bautista during the winter meetings.
Cashman says Jeter probably won't play SS for the length of his 4 year deal and will likely end up in the outfield at some point.

I love how the media has taken Cashman's comments and turned the words into a negative.

You don't have to be an MLB GM to understand that at Jeter's age, being a starting SS is next to impossible.
4 yrs is a long time.
I find it easy to envision in the 4th year of his deal or sooner, his lack of defensive play at SS will force the Yankees to move Jeter somewhere else.
OF is the logical choice, unless Jeter becomes the full time DH.
