Interesting two days -

Yesterday I buy a Dano CO-1, the discontinued model that is a clone of the OCD.

I find the CO-1 and CTO-1 (Timmy clone) on Amazon, both new, for around the same price of what I paid for my "OCD".

Going to toss one CO-1 on eBay and thinking of having the CTO-1 and remaining CO-1 combined into one pedal.

My brother got one to try to get more high end out of his Carvin amp and he and I had been looking into something similar to a Tube Screamer but with a little more versatlility. We figured out that it's really good for being able to dial in the exact sound you're looking for without the default garbagey gain that Tube Screamers give you. It makes that growly Carvin sound a lot brighter and sharper.

GE-7s are great for boost. You can shape and drive the front end much harder. Tracii Guns used one for years.

Tracii also ALWAYS had a DS-1 on...the fucker. I tried to break him of that habit, but it never happened!

I used to use a GE-7 with a "frown" curve to push the front end of a 2203 into chunk~very good setup, that. No flubby weirdness in the lows.

Let's see.... top name brand amp for an off-brand LP copy? I'm gonna say yes! I'm sure the guitar is nice but it hasn't bonded with you, and even if the amp doesn't either, it's a Mesa amp head, should be more valuable for the next sale or trade.

Oh, that part I know. I'm holding it for now, but I've never played a DC-2, so I'm curious.

hey guys, not to go off topic but I don't think it warrants a new thread...

I bought a soldering iron and decided that I was going to figure out the replacing/installing of a pickup(Ibanez R442 guitar, this is my first guitar and I'm going to using this one to learn how to do this stuff). So, I took the pickups out successfully but I'm not clear on a few things.

First, I took a pic of the empty pickup cavity and notice there are 3 wires(1 from each pickup) soldered underneath where the pickup would be and they are soldered onto the volume pot. what purpose do they serve? they aren't attached to the pickup..they are underneath them...I'm not seeing why this is...any help?

Image

Second, There is a small black wire that is soldered to the top of the volume pot, and on the other end, it's soldered to the back of the trem right near the top part of the first spring. this makes no sense to me whatsoever. Any ideas what the purpose of that is?

Image

3rd, is there a general rule w/regard to the color of the wires? If I do not have a diagram, how am I to be sure that I'm soldering them in the right spots?

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it.

Those are grounding wires. The trem has to be grounded, and the other ones go to the conductive paint that shields the pup cavities, which also must be grounded to work well.

As for colors, evry manufacturer has their own scheme...just download whatev.

So even on a H/xH set up, you have to have a grounded wire underneath each pickup?

How do those wires 'go to the paint' when they soldered to the volume pot?

Many Thanks Sleek, this is really cool stuff. It wasn't hard to get them out, and I really surprised myself, b/c I'm a disaster w/tools. If I can learn this....shit, I'll go broke from trying out pickups. ;)

Those ground wires go from the volume pot to the shielding pain in the cavities. The volume pot is thus grounded both to the trem and to the shielding paint via the volume pot.

Yah. The back of the pots is the common ground. If you look, it is all tied into the "ring" of the output jack. (As opposed to the "tip" which is live).

Does anyone have any thoughts on Agile guitars? My boys are teens that both play and they both want a Les Paul. I've heard that these are better than Epiphone LP's and are a good guitar for the money. I'm not a player so I have no idea on the technical considerations, etc.

I have 2 Agiles, an AL2000 with Floyd Rose and a Valkyrie SG copy also with Floyd Rose. Ther was a pretty good discussion a fewe pages back on this thread. I recommend them highly, even the low-line 2000s are nicer than the Epi LPs IMO. Both of mine came in set up and paying and sounding great, and I own a 1977 Gibson Les Paul Standard to compare to. I'm not gonna say they are as nice as the Gibson, but they play just as good and sound pretty good too. The electronics are cheaper but functional.

Some people complain that they are heavier than Epiphones - they claim to weigh 10 lbs which is in the balpark for a Gibson as well. My Agiles are lighter because they have the Floyd Rose trems and a good bit of wood is cut out for a trem cavity. But my Gibson weighs about 10 lbs too and that's just part of owning a Les Paul type guitar. A guy on the earlier thread said he had one that weighed 14 lbs. and that's pretty heavy, but you could find the same thing with an Epiphone too. Mahogany is a heavy wood and that's what Les Pauls are made of.

Your kids may notice that the cutaway and the headstock are a little different than the Gibson; that's a legal requirement. But even with the Epiphone the headstock is different than the Gibson. They will really have a guitar that's a bit better than the Epiphone, with nicer fretboard inlays and hotter pickups, and if you have 2 sons you can get guitars for both for less than one Epi LP Standard. Hope this helps!
