I'm going to my first game Saturday night, and Scott fucking Kazmir is starting. Scott fucking Kazmir. Dammit. On the plus side I'll get to see a lot of the bullpen in action.
Yeah, I think Texas still is the team to beat in the West.

They lost something with Lee obviously, but that offense is vicious as hell. Plus there is no way they weren't going to come out of the gates swinging after being shut down by San Fran. Oakland and Seattle is still a year or two out barring a big move. I put Anaheim in that catagory too....they JUST figured out that Fernando Rodney shouldn't be a closer.......

NY lost yesterday so.....

I know we're talking sample size here but Callaspo and Kendrick are tearing it up thus far. Howie is finally taking some walks, and hopefully Callaspo's performance last year was due to recovering from an injury. With so many of the Angels having a bad year last year, if most of them just have an average year it will be a better season.

Kill-
Your team lost their 6th consecutive game this afternoon.

IMO, they still are dangerous.
The way the Yankees vs sox rivalry seems to work, the sox might sweep the Yankees this weekend.

Certainly. I would pick them to finish above Oakland and Seattle so far ( Sporting News, BP and HBT do too ). Last season they had a 80-82 record, which isn't what you'd expect from Scosscia.

I don't know what to say about Kazmir. Remember when we were tearing Minyana apart for making that trade here? I think everybody was. I liken Kazmir as a lesser version of what you could get with a "healhier" Erik Bedard. If the front end of Anaheim's rotation can stay healthy is the biggest factor IMO.

Haren was could be a good reclaimation project. He's lost his FB, but still has a wicked split and he has good sink. He can reach back for that little extra when he needs it, but hopefully it won't be often. Who knows how much he has left in the tank. The scouting reports are saying since he's a California guy he might be well-adjusted to playing there. Scott Downs was a good addition too.

I think the problems are with offense really. I have no fear about the SP heating up......some of them anyway. As I said earlier, one run losses I can deal with. I need to look at the replays to what happened today since I just got home. I bet Jacoby.....DIDN'T DO ANYTHING.

A sweep would be nice, but in order for that to happen Beckett needs his FB and FB location back. Losing a few mph then trying to sneak in a change up...against a fucking line-up like that is suicidal.

*edit*

Lester struck out 9 in 7! Youks went hitless for the fourth straight game.......from there it snowballs.

Manny being Manny.
Benched on Wednesday, takes the day off Thursday, retires today.
He was also facing a 100 game suspension for testing positive for PED's during spring training.

What a nice play by José Reyes right now. Way to turn the double play and prevent a run or two.

Unfuckiingbelieveable. Wellll...........not really unbelievable. It just sucks to hear. That legacy? Gone. I'm glad that MLB is FINALLY cracking down on this shit though.

Oh yeah, Machado isn't it funny that the first win of the season came against NY? They finally figured out how to get Lackey a win! Score 9 runs behind him. Brilliant.

Scott Kazmir to the DL with "lower back pain." Fuck yeah. He was scheduled to pitch tonight and I'm going to the game. This pleases me greatly. Now with Palmer pitching, the bullpen will only have to go five innings instead of 7+.

Good luck to you.

I missed most of the game last night because the fucking Pirates game was on the same channel and it went on for like sixty years.

I think you jinxed it. They did well, though...

Wild game. All the Jays fans are bothered about the interference call on Escobar. Whatever, bad calls happen... maybe quite frequently when Bob Davidson's involved. Next time don't strand eighteen runners or w/e it was... coulda scored Arencibia off his triple in the fifth and avoided the whole extras thing.

Question for Kill:
How much of the Sox's poor start do you attribute to the new pitching coach? How much of that can be put on the new catcher selecting the pitches?

They've only gotten 1 quality start this year, and looking past the new additions in the pen, the pitchers who were here last year are all performing worse than last season. A lot of it appears to be due to poor location and pitches not doing what they were supposed to do. Personally, I it falls about 99% on the new pitching coach.

Actually they've gotten 2 QS, they just didn't score any runs for Lester.....against fucking Cleveland none the less.

I don't blame the pitching coach. With the exception of today ( and Lester's 2nd start ), the pitching has been pretty bad. I blame that more on Spring Training....or lack thereof apparently. It seems they haven't found their groove yet.

Curt Young has a reputation as a really good pitching coach. He'd done well with Oakland's staff and I was happy about the signing. I always thought John Farrell was pretty over-rated in that spot. Look at his track record with Dice K, Beckett's injuries, etc. I also don't feel he's the reason that Jon Lester was groomed into the ace he is today, or Buchholz's development ( who was signed to a 4 year extension worth 54 million today ), Pappelbon being a badass closer ( formerly? ), or Bard's heater.

I think that the reason for the horrific start really has to do with ST. The team isn't clicking yet. Maybe after today they will.

The past two years the MFY have put up a 10.58ERA against him. He's back.

Anyone here pay for the MLB.TV package? I'm seriously considering it. Not sure if I wanna go for the basic package or go ahead and pay a bit extra for the premium. I know I'm def. NOT currently interested in the Minor League pkg. (I think it's like $10.00 extra for "thousands" of minor league games - nah...not for me, not for now at least).

They gave me a 10 day free trial last July or Aug., I forget which, but I LOVED it for those 10 days. Loved the split-screen options so I could watch 4-games simultaneously. A little over $100.00 p/yr. seems like a pretty decent deal.

Anyone here get it?

I have it and LOVE it. Being a Red Sox fan in southeast Texas sucked, the only games I used to be able to watch were against the Rangers or on ESPN. Definitely get the "premium package" it allows you to pick which teams broadcast you want to watch, if not you'll be stuck watching the home teams broadcast. All that being said, whatever your "home market" team is will be blacked-out, example: being in Texas I can't get any Rangers or Astros games.

I don't know where to start. So much happened over the weekend.
Manny retiring due to failing his 3rd MLB test or the red sox winning the series vs the Yankees, followed by the sox losing bad last night vs the rays.

Josh Hamilton broke his arm

DETROIT -- Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is headed to the disabled list and is expected to miss six to eight weeks after breaking his upper right arm Tuesday while diving into home plate on a play he called "stupid."

I couldn't fucking believe that Oakland traded him. They got the motherfucker for Mark Mulder, showing what I thought was Beane knowing when to cut a pitcher loose ( erroneous 2003 Cy Young winner Barry Zito say's "hi" ).

Then they trade Haren to AZ for 6 players. The only one whose name will ring a bell to anyone is Bret Anderson. AZ trades him to Anaheim for a PTBNL ( Tyler Skaggs ) and some change.

So I'm thinkin' that Haren is like a step away from his arm falling off. Nope. He's quite the badass when healthy. Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles is concerned that Sciosscia is over-pitching he and Weaver, but has made efforts to check with his pitching coach.
http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/m ... id=6325227

I wonder if Beane looks at this one as "maybe I shoulda held on to the guy". Coincidentally Oakland just locked up Trevor Cahill ( 5/30 ) so it's not like they can't afford a young pitcher. Fangraphs has an interesting article on it here:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.ph ... ds-cahill/

Cahill is good and had a 2.2WAR last season. Dan Haren's was 3.1. ( 17.0 from '08-'10, 10.8 with AZ ). I never was able to wrap my head around why Oakland traded him, same with Arizona. Maybe he was due a massive payday or something. Two very good pitchers at the top of the rotation? Scary. Plus Texas losing Hamilton for two months might be enough to lose their ( predicted ) reign in the AL West

*edit*

Micheal Pineda pitched like a champ for Seattle too. 7.1IP 7K 2ER 2BB He's one of the Tacoma studs that's a rookie this year. Not King Felix good, but he'll be badass. His breaking stuff isn't there yet, he got all his Ks on fastballs up in the zone. Excellent location and control 95-98mph. He threw 78 for 14 swinging strikes.

He'll be a big fly ball pitcher and without developed secondary stuff, batters will eventually catch up to his heat. We could be seeing a good top of the rotation starter blooming right now. He was one of the reasons the Rainiers kept being in the PCL Championship.

Scioscia is a bit different this year. He's already keeping pitchers in longer and not giving Mathis 80% of the starts behind the plate. I think he knows the pressure is on from Texas and there isn't room to fuck around.

But yeah, AZ trading him for Joe Saunders...wow. What a steal. I had some worries about Haren last year but he quickly erased them.

Yeah, I knew about the (Reds games for me) being blacked out, which doesn't bother me since I get Fox Sports Ohio and they broadcast prob. 150+ of the games per season, so that is def. not a problem. And yeah, I guess I will spring for the premium so I can listen to whichever teams broadcast I prefer, plus I know there's another extra option or two and it's only like what? $19.00 extra or something like that? An extra $20.00 isn't gonna make or break me, so I guess it would prob. be well worth it. Though I suppose if I'm still on the fence about it, I could always get the basic and then upgrade later if I find that I DO want those extra options. And maybe next season or the next, I *might* even spring for the Minor league pck. add-on as well, just depends. I WOULD like to watch the Louisville Bats games so I can see the Reds top AAA prospects play. Or even the Lexington Legends, that team is always fun as hell (and very inexpensive - dollar drafts one or two nights per week and just a really comfortable ball park to go and enjoy a good minor league game in), but I'm just not interested enough nor do I have enough time this yr. to pack in watching all of the MLB games PLUS a bunch of ML games. But I DO have to admit, for just $10 extra bucks, that's NOT a bad deal for an extreme baseball junkie!

I don't know if there are any other Cincy Reds fans here, but this kid we've got, Sam LeCure, I think he is gonna end up being a bad-ass pitcher. The guy has GREAT stuff (not high-velocity, just great movement/command/etc.). I REALLY liked what I saw of him when he pitched last season, and this season, he really looks like he has pulled it all together. Still too early of course to be sure, but I REALLY like what I have seen of him. Our other youngin', Mike Leake (who got to skip playing in the Minor's all-together) started off last year on-fire, but towards the latter half of the season, it seemed as though the book had gotten out on him and he was not nearly as effective. So far this year, I think he is so-so. He says his goal is to never end up having to go to the minors, but I kinda feel as though when we get Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto back here within prob. the next month, if he doesn't pull it back altogether, I think a nice stint down in Louisville will be a good experience for him and I think he needs it. But, only time will tell. Bailey and Cueto might come back and end up being non-effective, just have to wait & see.

Our bullpen, minus Nick Massett (who ALWAYS seems to get off on a slow start & is stinking the place up lately), though our other relievers are really rockin' and rollin' w/Bill Bray and Logan Ondrusek looking damn fine. Jordan Smith looking better and better and of course, Aroldis Chapman goes w/out saying. Once that guy gets all of his minor control issues and a kink here and there worked out, he is going to be LETHAL. I mean, c'mon, throwing at 105 MPH! Now THAT is some friggin' VELOCITY! I think the kid is going to wind up being straight-up PHENOMENAL! LOVE watching him every time he pitches and can't wait til he works himself into a starting role.

Our offense is looking quite excellent this year and our defense, wow, it doesn't get much better than the Cincy defense. Brandon Phillips at 2B is amazing, Scott Rolen, an 8 time gold-glover still getting it done at 36 yrs. of age. Our main short-stop, Paul Janish is just about as good a defensive player as you'll ever find at the position. Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs are a killer OF tandem (and back-up Chris Heisey is gonna be a BEAST, he is already showing flashes of brilliance at both the offensive and defensive ends this season). Even Jonny Gomes is improving his defensive game, which was def. his weak link. Our catching tandem is easily the best in the NL and I think our back-up/part time SS, Edgar Renterria still has some serious game left in him (I mean hell, he WAS the World Series MVP last yr. and he's playing some pretty decent ball thus far this season). And Joey Votto; what the hell can I say about THAT guy that hasn't already been said? He very well MIGHT end up being another Albert Pujols caliber 1b. I think the guy is going to be an All-Star caliber player for many more seasons to come. SO fucking glad he is a Red and very seriously hope we can lock up him on a LTC. Jay Bruce has struggled mightily at the plate thus far this season, but if he can get his shit together offense-wise, I honestly think we will run away with the NL Central division.

Anyways, I'm LOVING this season thus far.
