Teams that moved, kept their nickname and it doesn't fit.
The ones that come to my mind are:
Utah Jazz
LA Lakers
Any others?

Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets- The name originally came from the revolutionary war when the red coats couldn't get through the Charlotte area and called it a hornet's nest.

Cincinnati Royals moved to Kansas City and since there was already a Royals in KC they kept the monarch theme and went with Kings. After failing in KC they moved to Sacramento and after a long spell of ineptitude, they had a successful run for about a decade. Unfortunately for NoCal NBA fans it looks like they might be the Anaheim Kings in a couple of years.

A hornet is still believable NOLA though.Garbageman wrote:Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets- The name originally came from the revolutionary war when the red coats couldn't get through the Charlotte area and called it a hornet's nest.
DJWill, did you know the Dodgers were originally called the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers?

It's believable, but they should've changed the name. It's ten years down the road, and both the Charlotte Bobcats and New Orleans Hornets still get referred to as "Charlotte Hornets."NeverSurrender wrote:A hornet is still believable NOLA though.Garbageman wrote:Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets- The name originally came from the revolutionary war when the red coats couldn't get through the Charlotte area and called it a hornet's nest.

That has more to do with the fact nobody gives a fuck about them than still having a team named the Hornets.

Most articles about the potential move implied if they went behind the Orange Curtain, they'd become the Anaheim Royals.Rageman wrote:Cincinnati Royals moved to Kansas City and since there was already a Royals in KC they kept the monarch theme and went with Kings. I've been in Dodger stadium twice. One for a Giants game which was brutal, and one was the first playoff game win since 1988 in 2004 against the Cards. Both games i was thanking God I was wearing blue, while sitting with the mexicans in the bleachers and I'm not some little wimp. those fuckers are crazy.djwill665 wrote:NeverSurrender wrote:A hornet is still believable NOLA though.Garbageman wrote:Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets- The name originally came from the revolutionary war when the red coats couldn't get through the Charlotte area and called it a hornet's nest.

Were you foolish enough to buy the cheap left field pavilion tickets? Knowing to avoid that area unless you're a gang banger goes back to the 70's.

Re: Teams that moved, kept their nickname and it doesn't fit
The Rams name goes all the way back to when they were originally in Cleveland but it's never been a real fit in any of the cities they've played in. The Colts name is probably better off in Indy, where there's more farming, than Baltimore but in the traditional sense it still sounds odd even today. Grizzlies, yeah sorta. Arizona Cardinals definitely doesn't make sense but the history of the name goes back to when they were in Chicago (which also doesn't have cardinals) and the team had uniforms that were donated to them that were "cardinal red". The name was best suited for their time in St. Louis though where they have a baseball team of the same name, sorta like the NY Giants and San Franciso Giants.WTF wrote:St Louis Rams?

My contribution to the thread:
Calgary Flames, they were originally located in Atlanta and the name referred to the burning of Atlanta during the Civil War.
LA Clippers, they moved from San Diego and were originally named for the Clipper boats that are much more popular there than in LA.

Atlanta losing another team to Canada is the reason this thread exists. The Cusack wrote: Calgary Flames, they were originally located in Atlanta and the name referred to the burning of Atlanta during the Civil War.

And the Clippers were originally the Buffalo Braves.

I sat there both games. I'm grew up in western ny and have lived in FL 20 years, but bleed Dodger blue. The gangbangers seemed to be higher than me. I didn't think anybody would mess with me, just a bit intense, especially the Giants game. I wouldn't trade fucking with Barry Bonds for anything though. That's why I sat there.Garbageman wrote:Were you foolish enough to buy the cheap left field pavilion tickets? Knowing to avoid that area unless you're a gang banger goes back to the 70's.

Re: Teams that moved, kept their nickname and it doesn't fit
The Giants game I went to I saw multiple Giants fans get punched in the back of the head. What are they gonna' do when the latin Kings are all sitting behind them? And you know some guy got beat into a coma this year. He was a Giants fan. they also don't sell beer in the bleachers during Giants games. That shit is out of control, I feel sorry for their security.Hell'sHungryChild wrote:Like what do they do? Get drunk and violent? curious.NeverSurrender wrote:I sat there both games. The playoff game was more fun. They ripped a bench right out of the ground and passed it around the bleachers. Some dude got drunk and claimed he would run on the field if any Dodger hit 3 hrs. Sean Green got 2. They were still dragging people out of there , and a lot of Cards fans too. i think the Cards fans sitting byus were scared for their lives.
