Just curious what you thought of the Chara hit on Pacioretty? Pacioretty also didn't have the puck, was injured by Chara, and put out for the season (probably costing the Habs the series against Boston, as Pacioretty was the Habs best forward when he went down). One could surmise Chara was head hunting, just as people are assuming Rome was headhunting.

Rome was headhunting- no need to assume, look at his feet, they left the ice to get to to head height. So yeah he was. I dont' think Chara was headhunting and I dont think he planned to check him into the turnbuckle. I think it was a late hit in a bad place, but I don't think he planned it like that.

Negro please. Horton's head was turned and he went straight into Rome. He's supposed to be paying attention to the action on the ice and know where the opposing players are. That happened a split second after Horton passed the puck.

Chara, OTOH, was all over Pacioretty for about 3-5 seconds after the puck had been passed. He intended to annihilate Pacioretty. Arm around his and drove his fucking face into the board. He clearly had intent to injure him.

How was that play not worthy of a suspension but Rome's is?

You should let the non-biased decide this one.
That's not biased. Manning gets more calls than any other athlete playing today. Can't touch him or his receivers or the flags will fly.

With that logic then Chara should have been out earlier in the season then. You know fair is fair.

Makes sense from the Boychuk hit in game 2. He's laboring out there and can't get back on the plays as we saw from the -4 the other night. It looks like he's in pain.

That almost evens out the Horton injury.

The answer to that question is very easy: The NHL has a double standard for certain, star players.

If Shawn Thornton or Adam McQuaid had laid out Pacioretty, without a doubt there would have been a suspension - a lengthy one at that. If the league suspends the Norris trophy winner for 5-10 games, then they are afraid they will alter the standings, playoff matchups, even the gate depending where the team is scheduled to play next.

If that's Kesler who hits Horton, I guarantee you there's no suspension and it becomes "a hockey play", with Horton "having a responsibility to protect himself". Kesler is too important to the Canucks to suspend in the playoffs, whereas Rome isn't.

Same thing with the Burrows bite. Burrows is a 1st line winger on the Canucks who has been huge in the playoffs. If he gets suspended, the league opens themselves up to being accused of, partially, determining the outcome of the series. If Jeff Tambellini does that, he gets a game for sure.

Can anybody really deny any of the above?

PS: Waiting for Dr. Recchi to chime in on whether or not Horton really has a severe concussion, or if the Bruins concocted the story to influence the league? He did text Milan Lucic yesterday to wish him happy birthday. If he's texting there's no way he can have a severe concussion. Right Bruins fans.

This is true and the double standards are coming home to roost in front of a national audience. Funny how Bettman has gone silent. I guess he was embarrassingly booed when shown on the jumbotron the other night.

Nope. But it does need to change. As long as that type of system is in place the players themselves won't respect it.

I remember the NHL back in the 70's as being much rougher than it is today and yet I don't remember as many players getting injured. Maybe it's just a bigger & faster player = more serious injuries type of thing.

I still think a player who bites another player should get suspended regardless. "Intent" can be argued on a hit, for example I don't think Chara meant to put Pacioretty into a stanchon and I don't think Rome meant to give Horton a concussion, but there is no gray area when a player bites.

Dr. Recchi cannot see patients from his own team. It's kind of like Colin Campbell ruling on B's games. Conflict of interest.

You also have to take into account the tone of the texts.

Apparently, he wants to be paid like an elite player in the NHL, not just an elite goalie. You're probably looking at $6 million/year.

It should be an interesting negotiation, so it's smart that the Flyers made the move to get his rights now, rather than a week before July 1. IMO they need to get it done. They've gone the patchwork goalie route for long enough now. It will cost them more than money though - rumors are Jeff Carter gets dealt for a 1st rounder if Bryzgalov comes in.

You can thank the instigator rule for 90% of the head hunting these days. Players aren't allowed to police themselves anymore. Therefore scumbags do whatever they want without repercussions. Getting your face smashed in by some monster on the other team is way worse than missing a game or two.

Shit, Matt Cooke would be a vegetable by now if he played 15-20 years ago.
