Is Justin Verlander

Post by madmaxfan »

The most dominant pitcher in the American league? Or in both leagues?
I think he is the best in the AL and damn close to being the best pitcher in baseball these days. Baring any injuries he could put up HOF numbers by the time he's done pitching.
Discuss.

He's badass. I don't think he's the complete best in all of baseball though. There isn't a Pedro-circa '99-'00 right now, and he doesn't dominate like that. So in that respect, I think that Halladay is arguably the best. Me personally I'll take King Felix over anyone, remember he hasn't even hit his prime yet. Same with Lincecum.

Not knocking on Verlander. He's having a hell of season and is in the top 3 of aces. Maybe even number 1, there just isn't a pitcher that's dominating completely across the board by a wide margin.

The problem with King Felix is he plays for Seattle who collectively couldn't hit a an elephant with a handfull of sand. If he ever gets out of there or they ever get some hitters he will probabaly be unstoppable. I would love to see the numbers he would have put up with those Seattle teams in the late 90's and early 2000's with ARod, Griffey, and Martinez.

Weaver deserves some mention in this group. Imagine what his record would be on a team that didn't have a "bottom five in the AL" offense.

He's Nolan Ryan with less walks at the very least. He was hitting 100 in the eighth inning at Comiskey two weeks ago.
He's like the Liberace of bass & pot.

Here's some Verlander fun facts:

Reached 100 wins in 100 starts.

Fifth 17 win season by age 28. The only other two pitchers to do that in the last 30 years? Roger Clemens and Dwight Gooden.

My bad. I just caught that. I meant to say 100 in 191 starts. That's actually pretty incredible if you think about how bad the Tigers were offensively ( pre-Cabrera ). Especially in the win catagory.
