I like Kluson's
Didn't care for the ones Gibson used for quite a while that I think were made by Schaller, they sort of just came apart over time. The Gotoh versions are first rate.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Gotoh stuff isn't bad at all.....currently using some non-locking sealed die-cast versions with the chromed keystone knobs. Gotta snug the screws down on the knobs, compress the nylon bushing a bit on the shaft...do that, and it rarely slips.
Looked into the PlanetWaves lockers.....they supposedly work GREAT, but damn...they's FUGLY. Like turn a toddler loose on an Armani suit with a Bedazzler fugly.
Anyone messed with the GFS KMZ humbuckers yet?

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
If that helped, your issue is probably friction at the nut grooves and/or the bridge saddles, otherwise why would the string gauge solve the problem? These guitar were built and set up for 9-42 which was most popular in those days. Raising the tailpiece alone may have solved your problem if you get a straight shot going on. That may be why some people run their strings back over the top of the tailpiece, though I am kinda guessing there. It is like the old one piece bridge-tailpieces that are strung that way; it would make sense, though again, I'm just guessing there.exitflagger wrote:So do Epiphones.lerxstcat wrote:One thing I love about the Agile guitars is that they come with Grovers stock!
I did a quick fix that seems to be working. I re-strung the guitar with 9s instead of 10s and per a friend's advice, I raised the tailpiece a little. Both of those things seem to have taken a little tension off the machines and it stays in tune better. But I prefer 10s so I'm eventually going to have to do something about the damn tuners.
If it works for Jimmy Page, you know?

It's almost NEVER the tuners.

Yeah, you go in for the tuner change, and while it's on the bench the tech takes the nut files out for a second, files the bridge saddles clean of burrs too, and lines everything up straight from tailpiece to tuners. A lot of it is simply creating a straight line!Sleek wrote:It's almost NEVER the tuners.
Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
You know I've changed about 1.339,652 strings in those 7 years I was on the road. In all that time, I never came across a guitar that went out of tune because it had bad tuners, and the Kluson split-shafts were the ONLY ones where I wouldn't prick my fingers.ElToro wrote:yes, you are..Sleek wrote:...am I the only person who has never had a problem with Klusons and thinks the Kluson split shaft is the best ever tuner?

Floyds were good for that, too, after I started putting the ball end at the headstock...

I've always felt Klusons were a bit sloppy, but I've never had a guitar go out for anything other than nut issues/string stretching.. even a Gibson G. Klusons seek to wear as far as I am concerned.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Has anyone had any experience with custom painting or even guitar body swirling ???
I've been watching some videos on guitar body swirling like Vai had Ibanez start doing with his 77 & 777 Jems ....
Also, any ideas on where to get decent quality but cheap guitar bodies ??? Preferably only requiring pickups & a neck etc... I don't have the skills or ability to do all the woodworking things required to finish/seal the body.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I can't remember if this has been mentioned in this thread yet....
Seymour Duncan Triple Shot .....
Has anyone had any experience with this ??? I'm seriously considering getting 2 of these for the 2 humbuckers I've got in my Yamaha AES620 (SD JB Bridge, Yamaha Alnico5 Neck)
I saw a video from Seymour Duncan where they said that rewiring the bridge Triple Shot in reverse (switch White/Green & switch Black/Red), will put it out of phase with the neck to obtain the Strat "Quack" sound...
Also anyone tried the Seymour Duncan Liberator ...
Allows you to change pickups in less than 5mins with no soldering ...
Finally, I've been kicking around the idea of installing a Fernandes Sustainer to replace the Alnico5 in the neck... instead of having to drill the body, could the Sustain & Feedback switches be wired into 2 Push/Pull pots ???

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
In order:
1. I've tried a *lot* of different switching shit, even installing an entire Jimmy Page harness in my friend's guitar...and I just don't know. They don't really do it for me.
If I want a single sound, I reach for my tele or strat EVERY time, regardless of the fact I have about 3 different coil-tapped guitars around.
That being said, The one thing I do like is the switching from the tele plus deluxe's, where you can select either coil of the humbucker...being able to grab the one closer to the neck is a pretty cool option. I have a schecter PT I wired like that.
2. I can already wire in a pickup in about 5 minutes...so what's the point?
3. The sustainer has two switches, both two-way. You could probably do it with a couple push/pulls, but personally, I might go for a couple varitone-style rotary switches in place of your tone knobs...they are just more sure...(mind you, I never use tone knobs, lol)
I have a Fernandes with the sustainor, and I never use it...but it really is a great effect and *definitely* works great.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I only have the one Electric guitar these days, so the Triple Shot seems like a great idea to access a wider variety of sounds or palettes if you will.
I'm not sure I get the point of using the Fernandes Sustainer's feedback feature without having any sort of whammy bar to control or abuse it... The sustainer feature is a no-brainer though.
The Seymour Duncan site has a heap of different wiring diagrams for many different types of setups... cool stuff.

What about getting a pickup buit for splitting? The tele plus I had had two seperate single coils wired as a hum, and that really worked for splitting...and Duncan has those things with a single and P90...T-Jay wrote:I only have the one Electric guitar these days, so the Triple Shot seems like a great idea to access a wider variety of sounds or palettes if you will.

The "feedback" switch on a sustainer makes it go fbetween a unison feedback to a fifth-up feedback...it ALWAYS does a feedback sound, like a polyphonic e-bow.
I'd suggest try-before-you-buy...it doesn't sound like you have the concept exactly right.
Mind you, there is a big circuit board and a battery compartment you gotta install with those...you'd have to rout away a bunch of your guiar to put one in...

Not with the X, but I own the original Mira. Feels and plays just as good as any other PRS. Pickups are great, kinda has an SG vibe happening. If you like PRS necks you'll love it.wattage13 wrote:Anybody here have some real experience with the PRS Mira X?

The main problem I just realised with the Sustainer unit is the routing needed to install it... my wife would kick my ass if I took any sharp object to the body of this guitar. It's the most I've ever spent on a guitar $1400 (had it maybe 3yrs ??). So would need to buy a piece of crap and kit it out to what I want... which I'd really like to do...
The one thing I really love about this guitar is the contrast between the JB and the Alnico5 ... very nice.
The one thing I am really disappointed with is the pots used for the volume & tone controls... there's no smooth rolloff ... it's full or nothing.. with very little in between.
I'm thinking of maybe installing a push/pull pot to change the phase state and setting up the Triple Shot as standard. That way I get the best of both options... unless wiring one of the Triple Shots out of phase would create the same result....
I did see a video of someone who used the single coil Sustainer with a hotrail single coil ... in the same humbucker neck space... interesting idea...
Found a site that does copies of the Ibanez Jem body http://www.etguitars.com/products/bodie ... -jem-style
But getting it finished/painted etc would probably be a whole ton of dollars ... I do really like the Lions Claw and Monkey Grip though.
