Irsay is tweeting that Manning will be out for a while. It's starting to look like he will be out a considerable length of time. If it was a week or two Collins wouldn't be there. Even when they thought everything was ok it looked like Manning was going to miss a month or so.

Manning isn't even rehabbing now, they stopped rehab when his symptoms flared up and started running tests. If the tests were ok Manning would be back rehabbing. He's not even considered healed enough to rehab at this point. So he's back at the rest & recover stage at best or needing another procedure in the worst case. Once he is cleared then figure 4-6 weeks of rehab and then a couple of weeks to practice and get in game shape. It just seems more like 8-10 weeks.

If he's out that long, they may as well put him on IR, let Painter play and go get Manning's heir in Andrew Luck. One bad year for another potential decade of dominance? I'd take it if I was an Indy fan.

They won't be bad enough to lose that many games. It's still a decent roster around Manning, it's not like adding Manning to the roster makes a 2-14 into a playoff team. Taking Manning off the team takes them from 10/11 wins down to 5/6 wins. Cincy & Car are far worse. Buffalo sucks. Tenn & Jax could be worse off than Indy, maybe the Jags are planning to tank the season to get Luck?. They do need a draw more than any other team at this point.

I agree that they won't be that bad with Collins, but I think they could be with Painter. I think they're around .500 as it stands.

The Colts have too much pride to enter the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. No NFL team in history has ever tanked a season to get a draft pick and they aren't going to be the first.

They are going to be bad without Manning...but not THAT bad.

Last week I saw Tony Dungy almost guarantee that Manning will
be ready for week 1.
What a moron. As if they know exactly how the man feels or how much
pain he might be in.
Manning is out indefinitely because of this most recent surgery.

Manning out 2-3 months. If everything goes right he might be back in December, but by that point Indy won't have anything to play for so they should just IR him and get him ready for 2012.

The networks will react to this by using their flex schedule in December and swapping out Indy for other teams on Sunday & Monday nights.

Is this a fucking joke?

I'm trying to watch the game, and the local NBC affiliate has gone PIP to a fucking press conference about the "credible terrorist threat" that is both incredibly uninformative and stupifyingly boring.

The terrorists have won.

Dude, I was going ape shit yelling out loud to my gf about this absolute bullshit. She works in Jersey City so she takes the PATH and now she's all frazzled. Getting pissed at me for going off on Bloomberg when it's, as you said, totally without information.

Then Ray Kelly goes and says the cops are working extra hours at least through Monday. You know what that means? Tuesday is a good day to be a terrorist fuck apparently.

All this "well better safe than sorry" shit is exactly that: shit

We aren't safer and have less freedoms.

Bloomberg is the biggest egomaniac in the city.

Like he couldn't have done this today or tomorrow morning. He chooses 9:45pm. Asshole.

Ah fuck it. Good 1st half so far.

Right, so a bunch of girlfriends are freaked out, and now the terrorists all know the exact plans of the NYPD over the next few days.

Part of me hopes this is a political masterstroke by Obama to terrify the public, so they'll cut him some Bush-style slack.

Record number of touchbacks and the Saints can't keep the Packers out of the end zone. Where is the epic part?

Edited to add: the game did come down to a fun finish! I didn't think the game should've ever got that close, but I never take too much stock in what I see in week one.

I'm happy with it, nice way to start the season.

I don't think the guys mentioned the new kickoff rules enough though.

I do like the "booth challenges only" thing. Kind of restores some of the wild wild west to the whole replay thing like the first time they tried it.

They have to put him on IR right? You can't hold a roster spot for someone that gets to park close to the mall entrance can you?

I have been known to hypothetically place a few wagers for entertainment purposes only now and again. But I would never do so until at least week 4 because since the salary cap era started it can be tough to gauge teams the first few weeks. This year more than ever with the shortened training camp. There are winnable games for sure but many more that will be surprises.

For example, would you even touch an Indy game right now not knowing what they are going to do and seeing how big the lines are? Do they come out with something to prove or do they lay down and die? Do they come out hard for a few weeks and find out that Collins isn't Manning and quit on him? How bad does the SB hangover affect Pitt? Is Houston going to be for real this year? What about all the teams that had coaching and/or QB changes and then got locked out? Too many questions to risk money on early, but by week 4 for most teams it's "you are what you are" to quote Tuna.

I heard an interesting interview with Peter King today. He was discussing Manning and why Indy had no decent backup QB. He said it comes down to backups in Indy get very little work in OTAs, training camp, and practice during the season because Manning is always demanding extra reps.

So backups already on the roster get virtually no work to improve themselves while free agents would rather go elsewhere to keep their skills sharp and get a chance to get some game action, all things being equal. "Indy's backup QB" on their resume doesn't translate well for future marketability. And that's part of the reason why Indy didn't have much of a plan b.

Does that really happen though? I mean team sports are squad oriented now, it's a squad game not just a team game. It's very poor management to leave yourself wide open to a player like Manning getting injured and having no decent cover. If Manning wants extra training, which is fine and a sign of a good pro, then he should have to stay behind extra to do it. Management shouldn't allow any player to call the shots like that, it's fucking small time and showing the player he's bigger than the club. I bet the Tuna and Belicheat wouldn't let that happen.

I think that Manning is a unique case. He's not just that team's QB. He's pretty much the offensive coordinator and on the field coach. He's been known to stop practice to fix problems with his offense and it's long been known that he audibles more than anybody else in the league. It's a bit of a double edged sword. While he's been in there, his team has been one of the best ever, but they are probably completely unprepared to deal with life without him. I guess we'll soon find out how good or bad Caldwell and his staff really are.

So what games are everyone watching this weekend?

I'll be watching New England vs Miami on Monday night, but also catch a couple of games Sunday.

I was hoping to catch Houston vs Indy but they are showing Steelers vs Ravens here. And then at 4:15 they are showing mens' tennis so I'll go over to Fox and catch Skins vs Giants. And then the night game is Jets vs Cowboys.

Opening weekend and they've got to show fucking tennis? And I would have liked Lions vs Bucs at 4:15 because that should be a hell of a game. Looks like now that Manning is out CBS wants nothing to do with Indy.

This makes a case for getting the NFL package.

I'll watch whatever is on at 1, the Skins beat the Giants at 4 and the Jets-Cowboys of course. MNF I'll probably watch here and there like I usually do.

Had a chance at free tix for Dallas/Jets but didn't feel like making the trip out there when the Skins were playing at 4.

Don't want to buy NFL package. There are about 10 bars within a 10 minute walk from my apartment that have it so if I need to watch the Skins and they aren't on sunday or monday night or playing the Giants, I can do that.
