If they think he won't come back or won't be the same QB he was then they will cut him before March 1st to spare a bad cap hit. Also know that Manning went for surgery just a few days after his deal was finalized, and there is a possibility he knew he couldn't go this season but tried to cover for himself until he got the deal.
The only way that happens is if he's truly done. Every doc I've heard interviewed says that it's an injury he should be able to come back from completely. It wouldn't break my heart one bit to see Manning out of my team's division, but I don't think even Polian and Irsay are that dumb.

That would be brutal, but it's a cold business.

The Colts can't afford to destroy their franchise for the next decade just because they don't want to offend a legend. The reality is that Manning is old, and suddenly, looks like he could be all but done. If that's the way it is, he has to go.

Manning can try to fix himself and come back with someone else. This whole scenario played out with the 49ers and Montana, and everbody got on with their lives.

But I don't think you can discount the "suck for luck" theory. The Colts are 0-2 and obviously the Texans are a better team. If the Colts keep losing, what incentive do they have to not lose 'em all? It's only week 2 and the playoffs look like a distant fantasy for them.

I seriously believe that they cannot be committed to winning at this point. They'd be better off with P13 as their QB than Collins. They are just going to keep sending him out there until he retires again, gets hurt, or just keeps losing.

I thought the Colts would have too much pride for this, but scumbaggery runs in the Irsay's bloodline. I'm not so sure any more.

Exactly. Montana, who is probably the greatest QB of the modern era, was sent packing. Rare is the QB who doesn't retire early that finishes their career in the same jersey.

Irsay is certainly up for throwing the season, and Polian is one of the biggest douchebags in the league. I would not put it past them to tank a season. Certainly they aren't a playoff team without Manning, but there isn't any reason that team couldn't win 4 or 5 games just due to the rest of the roster, which is more than the truly bad teams should win.

As for Manning, if the Colts cut him and he is able to be just 3/4 of the QB he has been there will be a line of teams vying for his services. Minnesota would love a QB who was 75% of what Manning has been over his career. Hell, Seattle picked up Tavaris Jackson - Manning with his arm in a cast is better than that.

Word is there are people in the Colts organization that doubt if he'll be able to come back again because it's been multiple surgeries for the same problem. It's not the fusion that is the issue, it's nerve damage around it.

First the Chiefs lose Eric Berry on defense...now Jamaal Charles on offense! Yikes, they're totally screwed now. Thomas Jones is old, although he had a couple decent games last year, it's not gonna be pretty.

As a Vikings fan it would be awesome if the NFL switched the games to 30 minutes instead of 60. Shit the bed in the 2nd half of the 2nd week in a row. Yikes.

No, if Manning and Miracles show up then P13 will be the entertainment.

While a CT scan revealed only one fracture to Tony Romo's ribs, the Cowboys' quarterback has been diagnosed with a punctured lung, according to sources.

Just enjoy it. This season of awful, losing Colts football means no P13.

He'll be back in August.

Can you play football with a punctured lung? Or are we looking at Kitna ball?

3-0 Washington Redskins. Who woulda thunk it?

Unless Manning retires or gets cut. If they end up going 3-13 & 4-12 over the next few seasons he won't be around.

Until he finds another team to latch onto same way he suddenly did with Indy.

I have no idea if that injury will sit him down for any length of time.

I leave that up to the medical staff

Kitna is a decent #2. Listen, if he was awesome, he would be a #1 elsewhere. I think its easy to predict what a #2 like Kitna can and can't do on the field.
Yesterday he threw a great pass in the corner for a TD.
Then he threw 2 picks-What are you gonna do?

Kitna is a more than capable back up and is arguably better than some starters. An all pro? Hardly. Team player? Yes. Won't necessarily win a bunch of games for you, but he'll hardly be the reason you lose. To be honest, I wish Colt McCoy had him in Cleveland, as a back up/mentor, but I guess I'll settle for Seneca Wallace.

Looks like my fan club has been asking about me, so let me make a few comments about this season. More than anything, it's a feeling of devastation and a realization of what Peyton has meant to this team, this city, this state, this sport for the past 13 years. No one in the NFL can come close to the impact Peyton has had in his respective community. In 98, Indianapolis was unquestionably a two sport town: basketball and racing. Ditto for the state of Indiana. Today, football is undoubtedly king. That's largely due to Peyton. He's been the face of the city for so many years. Watching him play has been a truly unique and amazing experience. Say what you will about Peyton's rank among the greats, that's up for debate. But what isn't up for debate is that no one has ever meant more to their team than Peyton does. No quarterback has ever played a bigger role on his team. No one has put in more time and work and understood the game better than Peyton. And the reality is, there has never been anyone like him, and there will never be another Peyton Manning. I truly believe he will come back and have 4-5 more great years, maybe more. I don't think he'll come back this year, but it's possible.

As for this season, the reality is we're facing an uphill battle. It was wishful thinking and foolish for me to think Collins could come in and do a remotely good job. Peyton meant too much to this offense. He runs the offense completely and has 13 years worth of knowledge on it. Collins has been here for about three weeks, and even if he had three years in it, he still wouldn't come close to running it in a similar fashion as Peyton. The reality is, I've always known that if Peyton went down, this team would suffer. To think otherwise was wishful thinking, plain and simple. It's a worst nightmare come true and there's no waking up at this time.

It will be a long season, but hopefully some of the bandwagon fans will hop off, leaving only the true fans. I can't say it's been tough being a Colts fan during the past 13 years. But I do remember watching the team through two in a row 3-13 seasons in the 90s and unfortunately I think it's going to be similar to that this year. Honestly I can't even remember the feeling of going through a season and not having the Colts be Super Bowl contenders, but that's the reality. As I've always said, I will stick with this team whether they go undefeated or don't win a single game for the next 20 years.

In the grand scheme, one bad season after about 10 amazing ones, isn't such a bad deal. And there is light at the end of tunnel, as Peyton will return and lead this team to greatness again.

You do not live in Indianapolis. You do not live in Indiana.

You speaking on behalf of the state of dismay of the city and the state is redundant, Greg....

Or do you see it how I saw it with the Favre/Rodgers situation where it is a reality that Favre wouldn't be there forever and having someone waiting in the wings & learning/watching THE BEST QB ever made sense and obviously paid off?
It's too early to say there is any interest in Luck. I still don't think we'll have the #1 pick, and even if we did, I don't see us drafting luck unless there is some doubt about Peyton coming back. Reason being, you cannot draft Andrew Luck and have him sit on the bench for four years. Won't happen. And Peyton is going to play at least 4 more years if healthy. So at this point it's highly unlikely. I'd rather the Colts use that high pick on another weapon for Manning or someone who will make a difference on defense. Then they can draft Peyton's replacement 2 or 3 years down the road.

If you need a QB call Green Bay....we grow them on trees up here.

As for the Colts....no time to be nostalgic....Peyton Manning is NEVER taking you back to a Super Bowl.....like in GB,after the 2008 NFC Championship debacle vs the Giants it was clear Favre was never taking GB back to a SB......So you can pay Manning 75 million a game to dink around for another 3 years taking your overrated/declining 6-10 team to 11-5 and get their ass beat in the playoffs by the vastly superior Jets,Patriots,Ravens or the rising Texans and Bills....or you can reload and set yourself up for another run.

How about them Cowboys and Romo!!!!
It took OT to beat a mediocre San Fran. Let's not get too excited. Romo played well though.
True. OT was neeed, but the Cowboys still came back from 10 down, with an injured QB to escape the city with a W. I'll take a win, no matter how ugly.

Looking forward to rex grossman and the redskins next Monday night.
I bet Romo sits out the next two weeks. He won't want to be embarassed by an improved Washington team and then reinjured by a dangerous Lions defense.

Anyone see the Giants defenders faking injuries while the Rams were in a hurry up last night? They should have been nailed with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for that. That's the 4th game in 2 weeks that I've seen that happen. I'd like to see the NFL crack down on the flopping. If a guy needs to be helped off the field that's one thing, but most of the time in a hurry-up it's just stalling. Start charging teams timeouts for it, and if it's as obvious as last night hit them with a penalty.

The Colts are done - for a long time if they don't win the Luck sweepstakes. They have a shitty and old team and they put all their eggs in one basket.

You are done.

Yeah it was cheesy but it's been going on since the dawn of time. They hardly ever call it.

What I took away from this whole game is that the NFC West is awful once again, but the Cardinals are clearly the best team in the division. Kolb has quietly put together a couple good games for them, their line looks OK, and Fitz is a beast. They have very little D to speak of but they won't need one to win that division.

A big factor on who wins the NFC East is going to be who feasts on the West and who chokes. I'm glad the Skins have already beat the best West team but we all know that on any given sunday the Seahawks can suddenly become the 76 Steelers.
