And what's more, he could do it in the third quarter of week 16. Unreal.

What's also crazy is that you could make a solid argument that Rodgers is having a better season than him (if you factor in the insane TD/int ratio) and Brady isn't that far off...

impressve but I'd still take Marino's 84' over what any of these guys are doing in the more pussified protect the QB at all cost NFL of today.

It says alot when 4 guys in the same season will approach or pass a record that stood for 27 years. Marino did it in his 2nd season, in a much tougher era. I'd love to see what a prime Marino would do in todays offensive friendly League, I'm guessing 5500 50+ TD's easily. no knock on brees of course, he's been unreal this year. but it is what it is.

Amazing to think that San Diego let Brees go. Not that Rivers sucks, but...

As a Chargers fan, I didn't have a problem with them letting Marty go. What I DID have a problem with was bringing in Norv effing Turner to replace him.

But yeah, letting go of Sproles hurt. LT, not so much - he was already fading, better to let go one year too soon than one year too late.

Losing Sproles was a shame. Getting rid of LT was fine. It was time. Matthews COULD be a top 5 back in a year or two, but the jury is most definitely out. I suspect in some respects losing Turner was a great shame, but LT was still too close to his peak at that point so there was really nothing else they could have done.

And hell, even Brees, who'd really only had a couple of top notch seasons at that point, wasn't a completely stupid move (at the time anyway) - given they'd obviously accurately assessed Rivers' potential. Rivers first four full seasons in SD were more impressive than what Brees did with SD. However, putting Brees out on the field to get injured when they did was stupid, and hindsight tells us what might have been.

Loves me some Breesus, but you have to wonder if Marino and Elway could throw for 6000+ yards in today's league where you can't hit receivers and the QB is a sacred cow.

Pissed on the parade by stating the obvious??, Hey more power to Brees but it is what it is, a more pussified league, those are just the facts.

Did somebody say something? I couldn't hear over the roar of the Superdome crowd.

Record achieved in 15 games! Suck it, Marino!

MNF had an interesting stat showing that Brees' average yards per game beyond everyone else exceeds Marino's during his record season.

Grading on a curve and Brees still wins it.

True, but Brees is also further clear of the league average this season than Marino was in his record-setting year. Not that it really matters. Marino/Fouts also had things in their favour compared to Unitas and so forth... None of this diminishes Brees' achievement IMO. Nor does Brees' achievement diminish Marino's.

I knew I should have sold my whole Marino, Dolphins Undefeated season collection. Might as well haul it to the trash since it's about to become worthless!

I'd be interested in seeing those stats, because if you compare the top QB's of both seasons, Brees doesn't seem as dominant:
1984

Dan Marino 317.5 yards per game
Neil Lomax 288 yards per game
Phil Simms 253 yards per game.

2011

Drew Brees 339 yards per game
Tom Brady 326 yards per game
Aaron Rodgers 309 yards per game

You are seriously trying to fucking compare fucking Tom Brady and Aaron Rogers with Neil fucking Lomax and Phil Simms?

Holy fucking Christ.

The fact that Brees beat out Brady and Rodgers says a lot more for him than beating out Lomax and Simms does for Marino, regardless of the margin.

And Brees AVERAGE margin over the rest of league is about the same as Marinos' was against his contemporaries, that's the point.

Nope. Just addressing this:

It either exceeds it or it doesn't. I'm only questioning the stat, not Brees' greatness.

Right. But you chose to compare only the top three QBs.

I'm talking about the entire league. Brees' average per game is about the same vs. the ENTIRE LEAGUE as Marinos' were back in the day. That's a far more relevant comparison.

Okay. I thought you said that it was more. Maybe I misunderstood. No big deal. The oddest thing about all of this is that if SF rolls St. Louis, Brees could be parked by halftime. And Brady could end up with the record.

Now I don't know if they'll do that or not. But if I'm Sean Payton, and I'm not playing for anything, I'm not taking any chances.

This will make Sunday very fun (and not just because I'll still be drunk from Saturday) fun for all the wrong football reasons.

I still say Marino's 84' was more impressive for a couple reasons.

1. of course, the rules were much tougher, WR's were mugged and Qb's not coddled.

2.It was his fucking second season and first full time season even though the year prior he was the first ever rookie QB to start the pro bowl, a dude doing that in his second season was unthinkable hence all the Marinomania that ensued, no one seen anything like it before.

Now I'm not pissing on Brees' parade, in this era and with tom Brady 188 yards away from Marinos mark himself, it just dosent seem so special, it's highly unlikley but possible that Brady actually overtakes Brees in the final game.

And props to both Marino and Brees for being classy as fuck that night, Marino tweeted his congrats and praised him, and Brees thanked Dan for being the inspiration for QB's to follow.

Sure beats the hell out of idiots who slagging both guys, some dumbfucks, including an actual spotrswriter thinks there should be an astrisk next to brees' record
