... and so it continues:

- Shaw gets 3 games
- Neal gets 1 - for two seperate incident
- Torres doesn't even get a penalty for probably knocking Hossa out of the series

I actually feel bad for the refs. I think Shanny, and the NHL office, have them so confused, THEY (the refs) don't even know the difference between a charge and a clean hit anymore.

Hunter proving he's more of an idiot than we thought:

So on Tuesday, Hunter let the world know he felt Backstrom was being headhunted, and that any headhunting Backstrom may have have engaged in wasn't his fault.
"Every scrum, Nicky comes out with no helmet on, he gets blockered to the head by [Tim] Thomas the game before. He's protecting his head," Hunter said Tuesday. "He just came out for 40 games. You have to protect your head. With his stick being in his face like that, it was a dangerous play on his part."

and

Said Hunter regarding that play:
"I don't think he's going to be suspended. If you slow it down frame by frame, where was [Peverley's] stick? It was up in his face first," the Caps coach said. "Re-watch it again, where his stick's up in his face, and Nicky because of the stick in his face, that the guy put his stick up like that and Nicky reacted to it."

Shanahan fucked this up with his initial Weber fine. He basically said 'okay everyone...it's open season!'

Those four refs need to be removed from the rest of the playoffs.

Coach Q needs to send nick Letti after Shane Doane tomorrow night. Shanahan isn't going to do anything so the Hawks need to implement some hillbilly justice themselves.

Then he and they will get in trouble. that's why they have the cheap shots. The players no longer police themselves. The league is trying... and failing.

The most egregious thing about the Torres hit is if he just lowers his shoulder and hits Hossa in the chest it's still going to be a big hit. But he had to jump and smack him in the one place boxers are trained to hit an opponent because it causes the most damage. There's simply no place in the game for that kind of thuggery.

Good article, with clips of Torres' past indiscretions.

He's been suspended indefinitely,pending a hearing.This usually means a long suspension,10 games I would guess.

He's clearly a player who doesn't get it,yet much like Matt Cooke wasn't the problem, neither is Torres.

There's no rhyme nor reason to suspensions, and there in no respect among players.

Shanny did a good job during the regular season but he's abandoned his thought process for the playoffs, where games and players take on more importance. It's the way it's always been.He has a chance to "send a message" with a long suspension for Torres, but I agree with Nick Kypreos...a player isn't thinking of Torres being gone for 10 games when he's got someone lined up and that player is in a compromising position and his adrenaline is off the charts and the crowd is insane.

...and therein lies the problem, the game is physical(players are bigger too),it is fast(faster than it's ever been) and it is emotional(especially during the playoffs). These types of hits won't just go away, regardless of lengths of suspensions.

The players police themselves? I suppose that's always a solution, albeit not a very proactive one..Players aren't thinking of repercussions in the millisecond before delivering a hit anyways. It might stop a player from doing it again, for that game, but the issue would still be unresolved. You also take the risk of players delivering street justice for clean hits, which I really hate. But, it might be the only solution as long as the league doesn't care about injuries.

Capitals statement on Backstrom's suspension:

"We disagree with the NHL’s decision to suspend Nicklas Backstrom. This has been a competitive and physical series, and we do not understand why a suspension was imposed in this case while other incidents in this series have not been reviewed. Our singular focus now is on Game 4, and we look forward to the energy that our great fans provide."

Exactly.
But we have to bow to what the media says. The same media that has proven over and over they don't give 2 fucks about hockey. They take polls about whether fighting should be banned and ask people who don't even watch hockey so they can pad their numbers. The go "look, people want fighting banned. It's right here, 70 percent want fighting banned." Oh really, how come 98 percent of the arena goes nuts for fights, even in the low minors? From the FHL to the NHL, people love the fights and the uniqueness of it all. Fuck these people.

Honestly, a lot of what I've heard/read from non-diehard fans or the casual viewer regarding Game 3 of The Flyers/Pens say it was the most exciting game (any sport) they'd ever seen because of the fighting, scoring, drama, etc. Seems to have raised the interest level (for better or worse) in the NHL a great deal.

On ESPN's PTI during the "5 Good Minutes" segment (which was already at 3:30 when Eddie O started talking) they spent most of it on "violence". Fuck the media, all of em.

Exactly my point. I don't believe those numbers they come up with about the amount of people who want fighting banned.

And the last time either of those jagoffs on PTI watched hockey was when Wilbon watched the Hawks win the cup. They only talk about hockey when they want to bitch about it.

they have been a shell of themselves for about 6 years. The only good things left is Jayson Stark, John Buccigross and that fine babe on Sportsnation.
