Angels finally fire Mickey Hatcher! I loves me some (new GM) Jerry Dipoto.

Yeah, I know, changing hitting coaches isn't waving some sort of magic wand that will suddenly make the team better. It was just way past time for a change, and Dipoto is continuing to send signals to Mike Scioscia that Scioscia is no longer the GM and needs to get this team in gear.

I can't really be bothered, since I have pretty much stopped following baseball in the 15 years the Orioles have been terrible...

But are the O's for real?

Anybody see what that Lowrie guy from the Jays
did last night at home plate?
He was called out on strikes, argued with the umpire, then violently spiked his helmet to the ground. The helmet then bounced up and hit the umpire
on this side.

This clown should be suspended ASAP, for a least 7 games.

The ump not only blew two calls to end the game but after having a drink thrown at him, he called whoever did it a "fucking asshole".
He should be suspended as well.

i think what Lowrie did was much more severe.
the human element is in play when the HP umpire is calling balls
and strikes.
k zone showed the final strike should have been called a ball.
regardless, Lowrie has to control his emotions and should not have
spiked his helmet. what if the helmet his the umpire in the face or eye?

Like I said, he should be suspended as well.
He didn't throw his helmet at the ump it just happened to bounce that way.
Still a suspendable offense but 7 games seems a little harsh.
The ump intentionally swore at a fan. I'm sure kids were around.
He deserves at least what Lowrie gets.

Lawrie gets four days and a fine.

Suspension does not start tonight because of course he
appealed.
Ridiculous process.

If anything, when a player makes any contact with an umpire(Lawrie spiked his helmet and ricochet struck umpire), the appeal process should
be denied.

The umpire was "punishing" Lawrie, on the third strike call, for showing him up, and starting to jog to first, on the 3-1 pitch. Both pitches were obvious balls. I don't blame the kid for being pissed. I'd love to see umpires held accountable for their shitty calls, and conduct.

Lawrie was wrong in throwing his helmet, but he did NOT hit the ump on purpose. A small suspension is in order and he DOES have the right to express his point of view on the subject (even if he is playing the Yankees next).

Lawrie will be starting at 3rd tonight, and Miller is going to be umping at 3rd. Should be interesting, but Lawrie said he DOES intend to apologize (for hitting him, not arguing).

Are you certain the same 4 man umpires are
still in town for the Yankees vs Jays???
Usually after a series the umpires go to another city/town and do not
stick around for the next series.
Could be a new rule for a 2 game series. The umps might stick around for
all 4 games so they each get a turn in the rotation.

If the umps are the same, I hope the Yankees get all the close calls
at 3rd tonight

I was watching the 6:00 Sportscenter on TSN (Canadas ESPN) and they said the same crew is doing this series and Miller will be at 3rd, right next to Lawrie.

Baseball's owners have approved changing the format of this year's AL and NL Division Series from a 2-2-1 format to a 2-3 format, giving the team with home-field advantage the last three games of the five-game series.

The change, approved by owners on Thursday, was made to accommodate baseball's new one-game wild-card playoff round. The new round of playoffs was added after schedules were set with the regular season ending Oct. 3 and the World Series starting Oct. 24.

Teams with home-field advantage will host Games 3, 4, and 5, eliminating one travel day, and the wild-card playoff winners will start the Division Series at home.

Baseball could revert back to a 2-2-1 format in 2013, when the regular season is tentatively set to start on April 1, with a Sunday night game possible the previous day. Baseball is shifting from the midweek start it used in 2011 and 2012.

The 2-2-1 format has been used in the divisional round since 1998.

Baseball also announced its new one-game wild-card playoffs will be televised Oct. 5 by TBS and that two division series games will shift from TBS to the MLB Network under a deal running through 2013. TBS Sports president David Levy said a rights fee was involved.

The two division series games will be available in more than 30 million fewer homes on MLB Network than on TBS -- that includes some hometown fans of the teams playing.

Don't agree with the change at all.
It's not home field advantage if you lose 2 road games (that team has HFA for the first 2 games) and you come home and have to win 3 in a row.

Marlins send Gaby Sanchez packing for AAA New Orleans, call up IF Donovan Solano. Kinda sad to see Gaby go, but he needs to. He has been shitty all season long, batting .197 w/ 1 HR. Soooo LoMo at 1B? YES PLEASE!

Marlins hitting w/ RISP is still shiteous. FUCK.

I like LoMo, but do you think he'll be able to improve against lefties? I like how this year his plate discipline has improved, much better walk rate...

It would be great if EVERYBODY'S BA could improve vs. lefties. Christ, they're awful against them. LoMo has usually been patient at the plate. Stanton has improved w/ his patience as well.

Maybe if Ozzie spent more time with his hitters and less time twittering about NBA players they might be a little better against lefties. Just a thought.

Also as evidenced by Nick Swisher's time there, Ozzie's a manager that hates walks ( try to wrap your head around that )
. So he takes an opposite approach to plate patience.

This is part of what got Mickey Hatcher fired. The Angels as a team don't walk much and Hatcher was famous for a quote that "walks are a false stat."

In other Angels news, looks like Vernon Wells and Ryan Langerhans (I know, you didn't even know he was still playing) are headed to the DL. This could be a chance for Bourjos to get regular starts and get back on track, or it could be a chance for Scioscia to move Kendrick to LF so he can have his dream infield of Callaspo-Aybar-Izturis.

Yankees are not looking good right now.
5.5 GB starting tomorrow.
Hosting the Royals and then a west coast trip vs A's & Angels.

About time ARod hits the ball over the fence.
Tex is overdue is the most serious way.

Ibanez has been a pleasant surprise for the team. The guy is turning on fastballs and sending them into the upper deck at Yankee Stadium.

It's not just Ozzie, it's been a problem for quite some time now. Maddening. And we have issues with slow pitchers...Moyer tomorrow. O Joy.

What's up, cellar dweller?! :D LOLPhillies Seriously though, I swear it's MLB Bizarro World this year. O's are kicking ass, Philly is phloundering, Angels are shite, closers are struggling as are some Ace pitchers...shit is just weird!
