Paterno tried to cover for Sandusky and turned a blind eye to the situation. All for the sake of the school.

SICKENING!!!!

The press conference was depressing to say the least. If I'm Delany, I don't even wait for an NCAA decision, I throw them right the fuck out of the big ten. What happened there is the very definition of lack of instituional control and warrants the death penalty. The kids on the team should be allowed to leave and play anywhere else without penalty.

You're preaching to the choir.
Paterno and some of the Penn St. University staff decided to protect the University and their image over young kids that were sexually abused.
These same people protected the school for over a decade.
Inexcusable!
If college football thought SMU did something wrong back in the 80's, how should the powers that be feel about what Penn St is guilty of doing?

I think it is disgusting how people witnessed these things and never reported it out of "fear of being fired." Yeah great job guys really, So you see little boys being RAPED and you don't report it out of fear for yourself and for what might happen to YOU! What a way to stand up for innocent kids.

The school and his wallet. He apparently was involved in million dollar business deals with Sandusky, along with other Penn and Second Mile higher-ups.

The irony of the Nike complex child care facility being named the Paterno Child Care Center. They took his name off the building today.

At least Nike have some standards. They should have done it when the scandel broke.

It looks like this Freeh guy is pretty hellbent on bringing all of Penn state down. Realistically, what could possibly happen to that school?

Well I think we're all in agreement the school is going to pay out some big bucks but I'd love to see the NCAA do the same to the football program that they did to SMU in the 80's.

A lot. Money - corporate and booster - is the lifeblood of a program and university like Penn State. Penn state is Penn State, and I imagine local money like Hershey or Turkey Hill or what have you will continue to flow. But you get corporate big dicks like Nike bailing out and you are in big trouble. Public opinion is against Penn State in a big, big way now.

John5150 saying stuff like "death penalty...." well, he was saying it months ago and I didn't take it very seriously. It's only happened once in NCAA football and it took 20 years for the program to even start to recover. But now...well let's just say I think he's right. A voluntary one year "death penalty" could be the only thing that would "convince" the public that they are sorry, and are gonna "think about what we've done." It would also destroy the program for a decade or so.

I can't see the NCAA imposing that penalty.

I would love to see the same, but only worse.
The school deserves the harshest punishment that has ever been handed
out in the history of the NCAA.
To date SMU holds that title.
The punishment that needs to be handed down to Penn St should make the SMU penalty look like a misdemeanor.

I guess I mean, legally what could happen to that school. Could they lose federal funding? I thought if you didn't report a serious criminal act that was going on within a university you oversaw (if say you were the president or head of campus security or whatever), that is breaking the law. I mean, a university doesn't get to make their own laws.

How funny would it be if Penn State just closed down. I mean, not funny but, well, kind of funny.

They should change the name to State Penn.

I still am wondering why the School Board of Trustees continues to put themselves 1st and his horrible case second.
Over the weekend someone from the Board went on a sales pitch to say that any young child that has thoughts of coming to Penn St. should indeed enroll in that school.
Are you kidding me? A press conference over the weekend is NOT the time or the place to sell the school to students.
The Board should be concentrating on removing the Joe Paterno statue from the stadium entrance and removing anything else that Paterno is related to, associated with, etc...

How the fuck did those same people that had knowledge of what Sandusky was doing actually continue to be able to look the guy in the eye? And didn't the athletic director or school president state long ago that Sandusky would never be the head coach at Penn State when they were asked about what would happen when Paterno left? Pretty revealing.

A snippet.

"Kids usually see through BS. Stupid adults are who muddy the waters too often.

I get the desire by many otherwise sane people to have the Paterno statue removed from the stadium and ultimately our consciousness—people like St. Joseph’s hoops coach Phil Martelli. It’s natural to want to immediately jettison the bad to protect the collective good of humanity.

But keeping the statue in plain view, more specifically at the football stadium, will teach rather than help us forget. It will teach those who pass by it to look on Paterno’s works and despair. Look at how a once-mighty coach—a man often described as a great teacher—succumbed to evil and put his football program and the name of a school above the safety of kids."

The statue of Paterno was removed today and a report came out that the penalties levied against Penn State would be "unprecedented".

They were the ones who blindly worshipped Paterno, JoePa could do no wrong. JoePa wasn't that man of integrity that they made him out to be.

Everybody?

I love Jimmy B, but I don't worship him. I've never even met him. If I found out he knew about what Bernie Fine was doing, and they gave Syracuse the death penalty, it wouldn't be my fault.

Yes, it's the fans fault. The players too. Like the ones who just got there two years ago. What about the 5 year olds in town?

God, you're a dipshit.

The ones the media shows you, or the ones on the jury who put Sandusky in prison for the rest of his life?

Lots of people who did nothing wrong are going to be affected by this. It sucks for them. The whole thing just sucks.
