Yeah, taking a closer look at his stats I can see it.
Hitting .208 and only 9 less strikeouts than last year didn't do much for me but pretty much everything else is way up over last year.

After the game the Angels' veteran right fielder was able to speak with Gibson. The umpire did not speak with reporters.
"Everything's fine; he's in his right mind," Hunter said. "He was cracking jokes. He was cracking jokes [on the field], too. He wanted to stay in. Too much blood, though." ...
"It's a scary situation," Hunter said, "because when I kicked him I wasn't thinking I had rubber bottoms on."

From the South Side Sox fansite. Like how he gets a dig in at the end of what was a very classy post about something that had to really suck.
A new respect for Youkilis from a Jays fan
"Hi folks,
I sit right behind the dugout at every Blue Jays game. Tonight was a tough night to get back into the game after the emergency but I thought you may want to know that Youk really gained a lot of respect from me.
From what I saw the head of security got on the field and told Youk to tell the umpires what was up. They needed to get the cart on the field for easiest access. Youk removed his cap and was visibly shaken as he watched. He stood there with his mouth a bit open and his eyes kinda wide. I could see he, along with everyone was trying to will the guy to pull through. It really doesn’t look like he did though but no official word has came. He was definitely an older looking guy and I was able to see what I think was his teeange grandson who was obviously very messed up about it all.
Fans were kind of confused when the cart was starting to pull away as the medics gave CPR while running along with the cart. Some wanted to applaud as if to say “keep fighting” but others were like, “uh it’s not looking good”. A tragic situation altogether. I suppose though if he was a huge fan and his health was failing, if it could be anywhere your last moments being at a ballpark aren’t the worst.
Anyway. Good luck to your team, I hate Tigers fans.

Lackey is the one causing problems in the clubhouse and he's not even playing. Worst signing in Red Sox history. He always sucked pitching in Fenway, he got grossly overpaid, he brought down the entire team, and he cost a manager his job. If Henry had any balls he would have had Lackey banned from the clubhouse and then had him dumped to some MLB shithole like KC, and sent his pal Beckett with him. This organization disgusts me from the top down. They need to do a thorough housecleaning and nobody has the balls to do it.killeverything wrote:I think it was Schoppach who was the "unnamed source" on the new Valentine leaks. What? I haven't been following the whole Red Sox drama all that closely, so this I'm sure is anything but news to those of you that have, but I remember last week when the Mets were in town playing the Reds, the Reds announcers talked about hanging out w/some of the Mets before one of the games and said that Shoppach told them that when he found out he was traded and told his fellow teammates, there were more than a few that told him that they wished that they could leave/go w/him.
Man, it must REALLY suck being a Red Sox fan lately. That organization appears to be beyond fucked.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
My Reds just keep on kicking ass (albeit, it was just the shitty Cubs and mediocre Mets this past week), but hey, wins are wins and at this moment, the Reds are second to only the Nats for best record in baseball (and they have been getting it done and done BIG fucking time w/out arguably their best player in Votto).
Ryan Ludwick, whom many Reds fans belly-ached and moaned and groaned about the signing of in the pre-season...well, they're not whining about it anymore. That guy has his mojo back BIG fucking time. According to Ludwick, playing in Petco w/the Pads completely ruined his swing and he has finally got it back to somewhere around the levels of his days w/the Cardinals.
Todd Frazier should absolutely (especially if he keeps it up) be a top-tier candidate for NL Rookie of the Year. Most Reds fans saw Frazier as a very competent, if only avg. player to begin the yr. but that guy has been playing at a level far above what I think most of us would have predicted. I say good for Frazier. He seems like one hell of a great guy, always a big smile on his face. His teammates absolutely love the guy saying his presence in the clubhouse is always so positive and uplifting, even after a bad loss. You almost NEVER hear ANYTHING about him in the media, but that's fine. Let 'em keep sucking Harper's dick. It's not that I DON'T "get it" when it comes to Harper (he's so young and all - & Frazier is already 27), but you know, a little more attn. towards Frazier wouldn't kill 'em I wouldn't think.
Mat Latos and Johnny Cueto have simply been AWESOME (sans Latos pretty terrible 1st month or so). Arroyo has rebounded pretty well from his horrendous season last year. Leake is pretty good (he has certainly had some really rough starts, but some really great ones as well). And Bailey, I still don't know about him. He has had starts in which he looked nearly unhittable, but here lately, he seems to have regressed. He IS entering into sorta "uncharted" territory as far as innings pitched in a season and he really seemed to be worn out once he got to around the 50 pitch mark the other night and got rooked pretty bad.
But hey, as of now we have 2 totally TOR guys, no doubts about it...that 3rd guy, well, I don't know who that would be at this point. I wish Bailey would become more consistent, but I'm beginning to question if that is EVER going to happen. Classic case of a kid that was rushed to the majors WAY too soon several years ago and I really think that that hurt his development.
I think one of the bigger disappointments (offensively at least) has been Devin Mesoraco. His offense has been rather disappointing. BUT, he DOES only catch about twice per week, so I guess it's hard to get into a good offensive rhythm when you're only getting sporadic at bats. Hopefully he'll come around. His skills as far as raw catching ability and calling a good game have come a LONG way from the 1st of the year and the guy has an absolute CANNON for an arm.
Drew Stubbs, I'm not sure if that guy is EVER going to get it together when it comes to his offense, but if he DOES, holy shit. With his speed, I can't imagine what an extra asset a high-batting-avg. Stubbs would be. Same goes for Jay Bruce. When that guy gets hot, holy shit, look the fuck out. But he is SO SO streaky.
And, to top it all off, we'll be getting Votto back probably within the next 2 or 3 weeks. That's the equivalent of acquiring a blockbuster player via trade, etc. in and of itself.
Hopefully that Pirates/Cardinals 19-inning marathon will leave both clubs worn the fuck out for the next week or so and the Reds can AT LEAST get a split on their 4-game stint w/the Phillies this week. I know the Phillies record is shit, but I don't give a shit, I KNOW they're a dangerous team and I think getting 2 of the 4 against em (also they're playing IN Philly, making it that much worse for the Reds) would be great. I think we play the Cardinals for 3 following that, so that's DEF. going to be a VERY important series. Would LOVE to sweep 'em again like we did the last time we played 'em. Probably won't happen, but it would be awesome.
I think our chances of making the playoffs are EXTREMELY high (certainly not "in the bag" yet, absolutely not), and I gotta say, the Nats probably worry me more than any other team in baseball right now (certainly in the National League).
I said earlier in the season that I thought that the Rangers were the best team in baseball, but now, I might have to change that to the Nationals. They are REALLY DAMN GOOD. No clue when they're shutting down Strausburg or how that will ultimately impact them (which I personally think is fucking retarded...when you have the chances they have of winning IT ALL - you DON'T just say "well, we're going to save him for next yr." etc. because, even w/the same team, "next yr." doesn't always turn out to be as great as you might think it's going to be...I've seen that shit happen WAY too many times. Team A is great one yr., then, even w/all the same players, they completely SHIT the bed the next yr. - just my opinion on that whole situation).
Ok, I'll shut up now, I doubt anyone read all that shit anyways (seeing as I'm pretty sure I'm the ONLY Reds fan around here).
Of course, if anyone actually DID read it, what are your opinions on certain things (Frazier possibly being ROY, the whole Strausburg situation, who you think the best team in baseball is currently, etc. etc.). Also, any real "dark horse" teams any of you think there might be?

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
A report from the New York Daily News on Sunday morning, however, alleges that the San Francisco Giants outfielder probably didn't have much choice after failing to deceive the league with a phony website that was created during the appeals process.
According to the newspaper, at least one member of Cabrera's camp thought manipulating technology would be an easy path to explaining the results of the test.
The scheme began unfolding in July as Cabrera and his representatives scrambled to explain a spike in the former Yankee's testosterone levels. Cabrera associate Juan Nunez, described by the player's agents, Seth and Sam Levinson, as a "paid consultant" of their firm but not an "employee," is alleged to have paid $10,000 to acquire the phony website. The idea, apparently, was to lay a trail of digital breadcrumbs suggesting Cabrera had ordered a supplement that ended up causing the positive test, and to rely on a clause in the collectively bargained drug program that allows a player who has tested positive to attempt to prove he ingested a banned substance through no fault of his own.
"There was a product they said caused this positive," one source familiar with the case said of Cabrera's scheme. "Baseball figured out the ruse pretty quickly."
Nunez told the Daily News that he was "accepting responsibility" for the website and Cabrera's agents are trying to distance themselves from the plan. But it's hard to believe Nunez was the lone web surfer since the newspaper also reports that the website was part of Cabrera's formal explanation to MLB and the player's union.
The website ruse has reportedly brought the case more attention from the MLB's investigative unit and also an agent from the Food and Drug Administration. It's hard to imagine, though, Cabrera being bruised any further. Not only did his regular season disappear on Wednesday, but now whatever credit he got for being contrite on that day is also gone. He's gone from being a borderline MVP candidate to being nothing more than a punch line, the Stephen Glass or Jonah Lehrer of baseball.
And yes, that's a sentence I never thought I'd type.

Roger Clemens has signed to pitch for the independant league Sugarland Skeeters. WTF? I've been to a couple of Skeeters games, they're cheap and a fun time for the family, and every now and then a washed up MLB guy will come through, but Roger Clemens? Seriously?

I HATE the red sox more than anybody here, but I think you can't blameFacedown wrote:Report:
Carl Crawford to have Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
Gee, think this could have been done months ago?
the player or the team.
Going for surgery now means the team has given up on 2012.
The team waited as long as they could by keeping a high priced player
like Crawford on the roster so he could help them win games and get
back into the playoff race.
I've heard that for a position player, the recovery time could take
7-9 post TJ surgery.

They didn't need him. They are up there as far as runs scored without him.
If they did it months ago, he would probably be ready for spring training.
Doing it now means he could miss the beginning of the season.
Problem with the Sox is pitching, not a left fielder.

I think he did it to make him not eligible for the HOF vote yet. His class will include both Bonds and Sosa if he stayed retired.bane wrote:Roger Clemens has signed to pitch for the independant league Sugarland Skeeters. WTF? When an organization pays someone the amount of $$$ that Carl is making, the team is going to run him out on the field and let him play.Facedown wrote:They didn't need him. They are up there as far as runs scored without him.

That's what local radio has been speculating, but this isn't an MLB affiliate, would it still count against his eligibility?killeverything wrote:I think he did it to make him not eligible for the HOF vote yet. Sorry, but not when you have zero chance of making the playoffs.Machado wrote:When an organization pays someone the amount of $$$ that Carl is making, the team is going to run him out on the field and let him play.Facedown wrote:They didn't need him. Let Lackey go out there instead.

Lackey is on the 60 day DL. He is taking the mound anytime soon.Facedown wrote:Sorry, but not when you have zero chance of making the playoffs.Machado wrote:When an organization pays someone the amount of $$$ that Carl is making, the team is going to run him out on the field and let him play.Facedown wrote:They didn't need him.
