Ron Paul isn't going to run 3rd party. He doesn't wanna screw up Rand Paul's political aspirations.
You get an F for stupidity. Newt or Santorum would do more damage if they run as independents and that is a far more likely scenario. Ron Paul's son Rand would be damaged politically if Ron Paul ran as an independent and gave the election to Obama. So your first mistake was predicting that Ron Paul would run as an independent. You made your second mistake in saying it was going to be like 1996.
Paul will get the largest percentage of any independent in memory. Kinda feels like 1996 all over again.
The year was 1992, not 1996. Ross Perot was a non-factor in 1996.

1996: Percentage Clinton 49.2% Dole 40.7% Perot 8.4%
Then you made your third mistake in suggesting Ron Paul would pull Perot like numbers in a general election. Ron Paul can not even win a primary yet somehow you think he's going to get 20% of the popular vote in a general election. Why don't you head over to Amazon and pick up a clue. That's why a lot of people hope Paul runs as a 3rd party since that re-elects Obama!
Obama's reelection would ensure future success. Very few countries see America as agressive, and more countries are willing to speak with the americans and open up on several issues. Plus, most of the terrorists have been captured/killed thanks to Obama.
