Curious to see if the owners are pulling a fast one with regards to how they define hockey related revenue. If so, we're no better off; if not, this should get the deal done.

Re: The official NHL thread
The meeting lasted less than an hour today and Bettman said he was disappointed and it was a step backwards.
Supposedly the NHLPA submitted three proposals and the league rejected all of them.

It's still posturing time. They will be playing in November. The season should only be 65-70 games to begin with.

Re: The official NHL thread
I think there will be an agreement around the first week in November with the first game being the NBC debut with Bruins/Rangers on 11/26. If not sooner. The Winter Classic promotional $ and HBO filming needs to be ready to roll in mid-November. I could see maybe the first couple of weeks of November being cancelled and that will be it. Jacobs and the owners never had any plans to cancel an entire season. Bettman will be bringing roses to the meetings in about 2 weeks.
"At worst, the sides remain about US$550 million apart in the division of revenue over a five-year deal — depending on which of the union's three proposals is used and at what rate the business ends up growing. They could be separated by as little as $320 million."
Peanuts compared to what cancelling a season and the PR disaster it would cause.

Nice.
Bruins goalie Tuuka Rask suffered a groin injury while playing for his non-NHL team.

Rumour has it a bunch of the Russian NHL'ers are contemplating staying in Russia to play in the KHL. Ovechkin and Kovalchuk leading the charge. Good job Bettman and NHLPA, your bullshit is going to drive talent out of the league.

Re: The official NHL thread
The NHL and KHL have a deal in place that they have to honour each other's contracts, but I have my doubts that the KHL would just gladly ship off a bunch of it's local stars that wanted to stay.NeverSurrender wrote:Royal Dudeness wrote:Rumour has it a bunch of the Russian NHL'ers are contemplating staying in Russia to play in the KHL. Yes, the Russians have attitude problems yadda yadda, but there is skill amongst them. Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk and Malkin all belong in the best hockey league in the world.
This whole strike is pissing me the fuck off. I'm relying on CHL and AHL games to fill the void and it just doesn't feel right

Yeah, but supposebly the agreement between the NHL and KHL wasn't in place at the time Radulov went to the KHL. It came shortly after....

But they can blame the politicians. Nobody else is to blame. And those fools have claimed another team will play there.

Another bad sign, Bruins F Chris Kelly signs overseas.
He held out for so long and now has decided to do this?
He must know something.

Re: The official NHL thread
Yeah, I am.
Wish I could find the article but I heard a report on a local sports station yesterday that all decisions for the owners regarding the lockout go through 3 people:
Gary Bettman
(Forget who they said)
and Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs.
Supposedly, a lot of the owners would have accepted one of the counter-offers but those 3 wouldn't hear of it.
If true, all the love and respect that it took Jacobs decades to attain will be gone.
Smart move.

I believe it. You would think the owners would vote. the only reason I have followed at all was because of the Isls moving. That was too big of news. The rest of it? They can blow me.

Re: The official NHL thread
Elliotte Friedman, of the CBC, is as informed a reporter there is on the lockout. Here's an inisghtful article he wrote yesterday:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opinion ... rains.html
From the article:
The commish has three groups of owners: the ones who want to play; the ones in the middle, including Tampa and Nashville, who want a better collective bargaining agreement but recognize not playing is worse; and the hardliners. It would be a mistake to underestimate the last group. There are several who would rather cancel the season than accept a bad deal because they are hemorrhaging money and need immediate satisfaction.
While the players believe Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs is calling the shots, an educated guess at the final group includes but may not be limited to Anaheim, Columbus, Florida, the Islanders, Phoenix, St. Louis, Washington and Dallas -- enough to block any agreement from getting done (It's tough to lock it down because owners are forbidden to discuss this stuff. Attempts to talk to a couple were politely shot down).
This group is the biggest challenge for both the commissioner and the players.

Fucking Jacobs. There was a rumor that Bob Kraft was close to appeasing him around 2001 and and I wish he had. Yeah, he has his hand up Bettman's ass. Which is why Chara, Bergy and Seguin boalted for Europe right away. As much as an asshole as he is there's still a feeling that he has no intention of cancelling the season and losing the huge market share he has in the region which is arguably second only to the Patriots in 2012 based on merchandising.
Eh, I'm trying to stay positive here. This sucks. And I live by Jack Edwards and it's sad to see him aimlessly walking his black lab on most days.
EDIT: It looks like they're moving now so deal in a week or so with 7 day training and 60 regular season starting on 12/1. Or something like that.
B's would open at home against the Sabres on 12/2.

Enough with the doom and gloom. They should be playing 60 games plus playoffs to begin with. It's done. Let's move on to predictions.
Bruins over Kings. The lockout will serve Los Angeles well. Islanders make the playoffs and are the longshot special.
