Mike Shanahan: RG3 will 'set a record for coming back' from injury

Last month, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said quarterback Robert Griffin III, who suffered an ACL injury in January, "will not come back until he's 100 percent." Seems obvious, but it was probably worth putting out there given the criticism Shanahan came under after leaving a clearly hobbled RG3 in against the Seahawks, eventually leading to this.

But now, two weeks after Dr. James Andrews called Griffin's recovery "superhuman," Shanahan has some more thoughts on his franchise quarterback.

“(RG3's) over at the facility, rehabbing all of the time," Shanahan said during an interview with NFL Network (via PFT). "He'll set a record for coming back because that's how hard he works.”

Though, just like last month, Shanahan reiterated that Griffin won't be rushed back onto the field.

“He is ahead, but there's a process," the coach continued. "It takes time. Robert will do it the right way and we'll find out in July exactly where he's at. He will not come back until he's 100 percent.”

Meanwhile, Shanahan continues to think the read-option offense, which often leaves his quarterback exposed to big hits, also offers the best protection.

“When most people take a look and they take a look at Robert, they're thinking, ‘Oh, you can't run the option,'” he said. “People don't realize that the option protects the quarterback. The thing I have to get with Robert is when to slide, when not to take a hit. These quarterbacks are so competitive but they don't realize sometimes how valuable they are to your franchise.”

While RG3's recovery is the biggest offseason story at Redskins Park, it was almost a year ago that Shanahan drafted quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fourth round and was promptly criticized for it. That decision, however, could end up saving Washington's season should Griffin not be ready by Week 1.
