No one "competes" with the Yankees money wise in baseball. But in European football, shit, even in the Premier league United are competing with teams that have just as much or far more financial muscle. To keep up you have to try and get the best players.

There were rumours that Chelsea offered cash plus either Mata or Luiz. If it has been Mata it would have been an amazing deal for United. Cash plus one of the best players from last season for a player who doesn't really want to stay and is probably past his best.
