Not perfect because I still don't get the overall plot. Hitchcock's blonde obsession peaked with this film; it was the entire crux of the movie, but it still left me a bit confused as to who was who at the end.

This post makes me want to watch High Anxiety again.

World War Z: 7/10
When the zombies come, I hope they're more Romero-like. These guys were scary and would kick my ass. Good flick though.

Strangers on a Train. 10/10

I've been on a Hitchcock trip lately and this is one of his best films ever. Can't compete with Psycho, but it does have one of the creepiest on-screen murders of all time.

7/10 for me as well. I thought the ending would have been better. I was expecting an "Independence Day" ending. "We found something that will give us the upper hand, now lets kill these things." Maybe they are saving that for the sequel?

Oldboy - 8.5/10 - On a recommendation in another thread. Wow! That ending twist is fucked!

RUSH 8/10
The Ron Howard flick, about James Hunt and Niki Lauda's epic, and very nearly tragic battle for the Formula One title in 1976 - an era where the sport averaged about a death and a half a season.

Image

Really well done film, and you won't need to be a Formula One fan to enjoy it, although if you are you should love it.

It plays off the brilliant Senna documentary of a few years back (the later Lauda/Prost rivalry being a bridge to that film), doesn't fabricate too much, and the race scenes are brilliantly 70s looking.

It's not overly intense, and there's some good humour, but it has some dark moments too, as any film about the sport in the 70s should (trying not to spoiler it here). It's the tale of the playboy brit vs the button-down, hardworking Austrian, but in the end it makes Lauda likeable while not tipping into any sort of judgmental pity party for Hunt who was clearly loving life. It also confirms Lauda as one of the most driven, determined men in the history of any sport.

Miles better than any recent/semi-recent racing films.

CBGB - 7/10. The story wasn't so clear. You never knew how big the place got, or why Hilly was constantly broke and on the verge of closing down. The movie feels like it runs over a short period of weeks, when it's probably a few years. Acting is great though.

Le dernier jour ("The Last Day" 2004) - 6/10.

It's about this queer who's cured of his fagdom by Mélanie Laurent's tits, which I find completely realistic and plausible. But she rejects him because, unbeknownst to him, he's also her brother (right, as if that would stop anyone) and he never gets to bang her, so it's a bit too tragic for my liking.

Searching For Sugar Man 9/10.This is actually a documentary about an incredibly talented 70's folk singer who never had any success at home but unbeknown to him was a mega star in South Africa. The guy was a mythical figure there but noone knew anything about him.Rumored to have committed suicide onstage, a couple of journalists set out to find the truth.Loved it!!

"Prisoners" - 8/10

Very suspenseful and intense. You never quite know where the movie is going to go. The whole cast is really good, but Jake Gyllenhaal in particular put in an excellent performance. After more recent movies like "Source Code" and "End of Watch," I think he's on a roll.

Safe Haven. 3/10

Never heard of it, but it was on the cable box, so I'm like "OK, a thriller, kinda Sleeping with the Enemy? I can dig it."

Then I realised it was primarily a vehicle for a safe, sappy love story. "OK, whatever, she's cute enough and the thriller element still has to come to a head, so I'll keep on watching."

Then, the most ridiculous ending in cinematic history. Good God.

This review inspired me to learn more about this rivalry and the 70s formula 1 racing scene. I stumbled upon this video which you might appreciate.

L'auberge espagnole ("The Spanish Apartment" 2002) - 6/10: comedy about a bunch of douche bags in the European Erasmus college program. It's actually kind of realistic, but since I fucking hate everything about that kind of college experience and those kind of people, it just pissed me off, even though Audrey Tautou's pretty hot in it.

Les poupées russes ("Russian Dolls" 2005) - 4/10: the sequel about the same douche bags being ten years older or whatever. Now Cécile de France is kind of hot, but everything else sucks even more. It's like the Euro answer to the American Pie franchise: less crude, less idyllic, much gayer.
