Imma go try out a Crate vintage 30 piggyback combo with two tone tubby speakers tonight....I'll let ya know how that is.
If the head sucks, I might just grab the cab. It's a cute little tilt-back 2x12.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Just scored a great deal on this one
(thanks to my gf’s expert Craigs List snooping ability…I wouldn’t have known about it).
1988 Fender HM Strat MINT Condition with original everything. Ive never seen one
this clean and perfect since the early 90s. The original owner essentially said he
bought it and then it sat under his bed for 20 years.
Was a huge Greg Howe fan and always lusted after one of these back in '89 - '90
but was a bit out of my price range as a teen with minimal income. Some other cheaper
piece of gear always got in the way. Ive kept an eye out for a good one over the years
but most of the ones out there have been trashed and modded to high hell or have missing
pieces. Hell, the knobs alone sell for $20 each on ebay.
This one is the Razz Berry paint job (often confused with Flash Pink). Original everything,
even all the “Case Candy”. The one thing I always loved on these, even tho it definitely
screams 80's, it still has the traditional Fender Headstock. (not pointy)
It caused quite the stir among Fender purists at the time but it is a bad ass shred machine
that equaled its Ibanez, Jackson and Charvel competition. Im pretty sure that Fender’s sales
were pretty low during that period so they had to do something. IMO they knocked it out of
the park with this one!

Anyayou bitches have experience with the Catalinbread DLS pedal?
I scored a Hot Rod Deluxe at a really good price, and wanna get something for dirt, as the dirt channel sucks.
Gonna try my OCD and Wampler Pinnacle, but heard good stuff about the HRD/DLS combo.

The new one is pretty spiffy, but as far as dirt goes, I'd be highly considering a Mojo Hand Socrates. The Rook is one of my favorite drives, and their take on the Rat can only be awesome.Sleek wrote:Anyayou bitches have experience with the Catalinbread DLS pedal?

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Picked up a minty-fresh Tubescreamer, still in the wrapped box..pawn-shop crawl for $55.
ModTone chromatic tuner....$75 new from my favorite independent retailer. Dead-nuts reliable, display is BRIGHT as hell, true-bypass...works great as a stage-mute when switching guitars.
In a bit of a quandry about my sound...2-year-old Peavey RoadKing 50W 112 combo, swapped the head out to my old Classic VT 212 cabinet. Running 2 Eminence Patriot Texas Heats..definitely more headroom than the single Celestion Seventy80 I have in the stock 112 enclosure and less compressed-sounding. 3 JJ 12AX7's, 2 JJ 6L6's(seems to like these better than either set of GT 6L6R's I have)
BUT....while the Strat sounds tits in either the clean or lead channels(running Fender SCN's in it), both my Les Pauls sound like hell through the lead channel. The Heats were a trade deal on some other shit from my buddy/lead guitarist...looked on Eminence's tone chart, they are great on lows and low-mids, but shit on highs.
Looking to go back to the 112 enclosure(we have P.A., mic'ing everything..no real need for a 212), and cover a lot of classic rock/blues material within the band setting. Need something that can stay clear and work well with both single-coils and humbuckers(vintage-type outputs...Pearly Gates/59 in my hand-built Custom, V59 and Classic II GFS's in the Standard)....and that can handle overdrive without getting compressed as shit(not all-out thrashing metal, but a good overdriven/crunchy tone when called upon). Suggestions?

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Does anybody know anything about Rose guitars....made in the late 80s/early 90s by Jonathan Rose, in Tennessee?
From what I gather, he made mostly Tele copies, that are supposedly fantastic. A friend of mine got a Rose Strat. I've only seen one other Strat he made, and it was priced at $2,300.
"Jonathan Rose" was a fake name. He was on the lam from the feds for drug charges. He packed up his store/shop one night in the 90s and no one seems to know what happened to the guy.
I was wondering if anyone here knew anything more about him and his guitars.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Wouldn't you know it, I have a piece of 1/8" Baltic birch cut just for that...LOL.
Still sounds a bit compressed/muddy, I really DO believe it's the speakers. Not that they're BAD, but while they sound great with the Strat as I said, man it just goes to hell with the Lesters with humbuckers...have played the LP's through my buddy's Blackstar HT Stage 60 with a 12" Eminence Commonwealth, the clarity issue is not in the guitars.
To add, the VK head is about 5-6" narrower than the old Classic VT 212 cab..centered in the cab, there's 3" or so of space on either side. Was going to cut a hole in the "back" I put on ala' Duane Allman, but figued the space on either side of the head would allow enough air through to let the speaker "breathe". No breather holes in the speaker baffle.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
..Soooooo....looking for suggestions on a replacement(singular since I'm looking to revert back to the original 112 cab).
The Eminence Commonwealths are outstanding speakers, supposedly the equivalent or slightly better in terms of clarity to the old JBL D-120's...but they're pricey bastards, hard to find in stock and heavier than shit to boot. Put it like this, my lead guitarist's 112 Blackstar weighs a hell of a lot more than my 212 cab(and it was far lighter than my 212 with the stock Celestion Seventy80).
*No, I'm NOT packing 2 amps to gig with, so THAT'S out of the question..LOL*

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I'm not sure what you're asking...
If you want something to beef up a 1x12" amp, it's going to be heavy...but it'll sound like god.
I got a peavey with a 1x12" black widow that will dust most marshall with a 4x12 greenback cab...but that shit is heavy (I'm just talking sheer volume. That thing is 180 watts. That amp gets a great Mark Farner tone, but you couldn't play metal with it...well, maybe sludgy stoner metal...).
I also have an EV 4x12 cab that makes any amp you plug into it sound the biggest and loudest it will ever sound, but again, heavy.
You kind of pay the price in weight for that sort of superefficiency.
You COULD go down the neodymium road. Those are light as fuck, but will also cost you an arm and a leg.
You gotta give somewhere here...either in $$ or weight.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Was deciding on an acoustic yesterday and was picking up & playing a (relatively inexpensive) Yamaha, a Takamine, a Washburn & a Seagull. Was driving myself crazy for over an hour thinking this one has a sweeter tone, but the neck on this one feels better etc etc. Then when I had almost given up and walked out of the store because none of the four were begging me to buy it, I picked up a Taylor 214ce. Sold! I'm in love!
