More cool stuff:
In 323 career at-bats vs. Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez and Greg Maddux, Gwynn struck out a total of three times (two vs. Glavine).
Those K's are as a result of Glavine was given a good 10 inches off the plate
during his prime years.
Not necessarily, Gwynn struck out on a called third strike so rarely that the odds Glavine was the one who did it are slim to none.
His batting stats are remarkable, but I wanted to see how he fared against Pedro Martinez....a healthy, in his prime Pedro Martinez; since he's widely considered the most dominate pitcher in mlb history ( leads all mlb in winning pct. 0.687 ). So in a nutshell, Pedro Martinez was really, really good.
Pedro struck out Gwynn in over 200 times ( for some reason I couldn't find the exact number ) facing him just 3 times. 3!!! During that span Gwynn hit .333 off him. Unfuckingreal.
Very cool play happened last night in Arizona.
DBacks pitcher throws a ball behind Braun. Next pitch drills Braun, loading the bases.
DBacks pitcher thrown out of game. Reliever gives up game winning grand slam to following batter
Kirk Gibson was very outspoken against Braun and the PED scandal.
Is this the right way/wrong way to handle the situation?
Drill the guy to load the bases in the 7th inning of a 1 run game?
BUSH LEAGUE!!!!
Serves Gibby right for telling his pitcher to "get justice" in a tight game.

Think about that. One of the most successful pitchers to ever take the bump struck Tony Gwynn out 3 times in 200 ABs.
Clayton Kershaw throws first career 15K no hitter. It was actually perfect, but Hanley Ramirez made a bad play. As I look at more advanced metrics he may just have the most impressive in history ( -0.24FIP ). The most Ks in a no hitter is Nolan Ryan in 1973 with 17.
King Felix got a ND against the Padres. Striking out 10, 3H, 1ER. The guy they fucking traded Doug Fister for ( Charlie Furbush ) blew the game.
Fucking Hanley. Congrats to Kershaw though, that man is a flippin' BEAST. A perfecto would've been sweeter, but this is a wonderful milestone just the same. Couldn't happen to a better guy, too.

Totally. Hate the Dodgers all you want....and should, Kershaw comes off as classy player.
Mike Scioscia continues to show baseball dotage by insisting on inserting Raul Ibanez and his .157 average (and a whopping .523 OPS) over rookie CJ Cron (.275, .763) who hasn't started in a week. Some of the blame goes to GM Jerry Dipoto, who evidently refuses to DFA Ibanez. Scioscia has also had horrible bullpen management this year and many questionable player decisions (in addition to Ibanez). Fuck, he is annoying. When asked about it, here's what he said: Angels MGR Mike Scioscia, when asked why Ibanez is in lineup: "I don't know. It doesn't make sense, does it?"
Here we go again: Big Papi behaving like a little bitch or having another
steroid infused rage.
Major League Baseball executive vice president for baseball operations Joe Torre on Friday scolded Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz for showing his displeasure about an official scorer's decision earlier this week.
"Official scorers have a job to do, and by their very nature, their decisions don't make everyone happy," Torre said in a statement released by MLB on Friday. "But everyone in our game deserves respect. I hope that David will meet that standard going forward, because I don't share the same views that he expressed."
Ortiz hit a sharp two-hopper just to the right of Twins first baseman Joe Mauer in the seventh inning of Wednesday's game at Fenway Park. The ball bounced off Mauer's glove and rolled a few feet away. The off-balance Mauer was unable to recover, and Ortiz reached first base safely.
After viewing a couple of replays, the official scorer, Bob Kelly, charged Mauer with an error. When the inning ended, Ortiz could be seen yelling at the press box, making a thumbs-down motion several times to indicate his displeasure with the call.
After the game, Ortiz was still fuming, saying he "thought people were supposed to have your back at home, and it never happens.
"It's always like that," he continued. "I've been here for more than a decade and the scorekeepers here are always horrible. This is home, man."
Torre took issue with Ortiz's contention that an official scorer should give some leeway to the home team in making decisions on hits and errors.
"Official scorers should never give any benefit of the doubt to the home team. We want their best judgment, based on the rules," Torre said. "We have a process to review the decisions that our scorers make. Even when there are inevitable disagreements, we expect everybody to act professionally and respect the game and the integrity of our scorers."
Red Sox manager John Farrell dismissed Ortiz's reaction as a slumping slugger blowing off some steam. Ortiz, who is hitting just .188 this month, felt justified in venting.
Goddamn, Cincy's ballpark is a joke. Two balls by Jays hitters that looked like routine flyouts, even for those of us who're used to Rogers Centre, ended up HRs.

Anyone watch Torii Hunter on the Jim Rome show? Torii kills me, always loved the dude, his slam on Lebron James was great.
Torii, what do you think about Lebron leaving a championship game because of a hamstring?
Torii - Man, I've been there, let me put it like this, the other night I'm having sex with my wife and developed a cramp so I reached down moved my leg over and went back to business! It's a championship game and you leave for a hamstring? Man, you've got to suck it up and get back in there.
I know a lot of you guys have pulled ham's and played with injuries, Lebron's over acting made me laugh. Not buying it.

Tim Lincecum threw his second no hitter against the Padres in almost exactly one year since he no hit them last time.
*edit*
The Giants have had 3 no hitters in a row. Cain ( perfect ) in '12, and Timmy in '13 & '14.
Bochy said "this will bring us together" since they've been struggling lately. The West Coast Yankees are like 3 back and SF lost like 11 out of 14. They also really need Pagan back, but that's soon. I still think they're the team to beat in the NL.
killeverything wrote:Vanderbilt defeats Viginia 3-2 to win College World Series.
I had Texas going all the way, Vanderbilt beat them to advance to the final round. They were a lot tougher than I originally thought.
I was going back n forth but Vagina was up 2 to 1 before the error.
IMO that error cost Vagina the game. The SS fields that easy grounder and it's a possible two n out....Instead of a man on 1st and 2nd with one out.

Speaking of displaced closers, SF goes with closer by committee after Romo blows 3rd out of 5 saves. His outpitch ( the slider ) is getting hammered. Romo is going to move to the 7th with Casilla and Affeldt switching 8th and 9th duties.
Casilla was the closer when Wilson went down in 2012, but blister issues had Romo saving the WS. SF is on a fall, not unlike Boston's in 2011 and now sit with a 1 game lead in the West ( while currently down 1 run vs. a very hot Cincinnati with no hitter vet, Homer Bailey pitching ).
Meanwhile Kershaw has K'd 9 through 4. One of which was his 100th of the season; while only walking 4! Four. The last time that few walks with 100K in Dodgers history was Koufax in '65 with 19.
The West has gotten really interesting and Clayton Kershaw is amazing. Like historically amazing.
Pujols was thrown out at 2B as he walked to the base trying for a double. No slide, nothing. He was still hitting at his next turn in the lineup, and after the game he said he has a swollen lymph gland in his groin. And yet, he still played.
I fucking hate him. Worst contract ever. If he can't run or slide he shouldn't be playing.

He's a DH with superstar power. I wonder if they're running him out there because the chorus of "where's our superstar DH/1B?" would become deafening. Everyone but Freese and Conger's bats in Anaheim are starting to heat up. I wonder if that's just fan appeasement managing on their part.
Meanwhile it looks like the guy who was the face of the Red Birds really wasn't needed after all. That still blows my mind.

Doesn't feel so good to have a superstar contract player on the team that doesn't live up to the hype huh?
I remember when Albert was a FA and even Stevie Wonder could have predicted the Angels offer was ridiculous.

A team team that doesn't live up to the hype? Like spending over a trillion dollars for only ONE ring since 2000? Or is it a different kind of hype you're talking about?
Speaking of ridiculous contracts how is Arod's working out for ya? "Signed, Sealed, And Delivered", right?
Joe Girardi say's CC Sabbathia's season is over. How's that contract working out for you Machado? Idiot.
Johnny Yankee say's "he could still out hit half the league." Johnny couldn't out hit Mario Mendoza his last year in Cleveland. He want's a shot to get his 231 hits to reach 3k. No hall for you Johnny. Sorry.
Brandon Belt ( finger ) returns from the DL for SF today. I liken Belt to a possible Will Clark 2.0 and SF's needs something because they are falling apart.
Josh Donaldson returns to the lineup after 2 days rest.
Justin Smoak returns from DL, only to be sent to AAA. Smoak has hit like .200 this season and since he's 27, I think Seattle has finally realized that he's a bust. Hopefully he's cut.
Cole Gillespe DFA. I think Gillespe is better than most teams think, he just needs a chance to play.
Corey Hart returns from DL. Gillespe was optioned to make room for Hart. Both Dustin "I was drafted before that Mike Trout guy" Ackley and Justin Smoak are on their last legs in the majors. Ackley went on a 6 game hit streak, so he avoided the axe for now.
