No Good deed (2002) Samuel L jackson and Milla Jovovich

For some reason it felt like a tv movie from the acting, the way it was shot and those annoying fade away that looked like places to insert commercials

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes - 4.5 of 5 Stars

Fantastic movie. I really wish I'd gone to see it at the 3D theatre with Motion Seats. It would have been the best film of the year I think. The sets/locations look fantastic on my 50" HD 2D screen, and the CG apes are pretty indistinguishable from real apes. Great story, great dialogue. And though she's not really a big part of it, any time Keri Russell is onscreen it's a good thing.

New Years Evil - 5/10. When I first saw this, on a rerun of Movie Macabre years after it was released, I thought it was much better. But I put that more on the fact that that it involved Elvira more than the actual storyline.

I rented three over the weekend.

First up...
Deliver us from evil: 4/10
The horror movie is too over the top in terms of everything, from the thick new york accents to the whole supernatural shebang. It probably could have been played off better if they hinted at the supernatural stuff, but it segued it into a story about a really disturbed GI. But no they had to go over the top, and some scenes just came off as comical.
(when the zero dark 30 dude broke into song... I chuckled).
The scary thing was out of the three I rented, I originally thought this was going to be the best of the batch of my rentals, but I was wrong.

Next up.....

Purge II Anarchy: 5.5/10
I really hated the first Purge film, I think I even ranked as the second worst movie I saw last year (after the total hunk of shit also known as The Counselor). And I wasn't really looking to see this one, but it was slim picking at Redbox (as you can tell by my other choices) so I took a gamble.
This one was an upgrade to the original which again sucked and sucked hard.. It was more of a compelling albeit unbelievable story, and was basically turned into a standard shoot 'em up action flick.

Which leads me to the one I had the least expectations about...

Grace: The Possession: 6/10
Out of the three, this one surprised me the most. It wasn't the greatest horror movie by any means, but it was just different in its approach with the whole POV aspect. It was nice change from all the found footage movies. Again, not the greatest horror flick, but worth checking out conceptually.

I really didn't like the first Purge. They set up this really interesting premise and then made it a home invasion movie. Why bother?

I enjoyed Purge: Anarchy a LOT more.

The Equalizer - 8/10. Denzel in very good form, playing the 'Making things right' guy, excellently. Could be the start of a decent franchise?

The Interview - 6/10. A lot of fuss (Understandably so), a few giggles, good chemistry between Rogen & Franco, an ok film.

District 9 (2009) - 8/10. I didn't know anything about this before and I normally can't stand either action or science-fiction stuff, but this was great.
Now there's a movie that could actually use a sequel.

Divergent. 4/10
Would have been 6/10 if Hunger Games had never existed which it so blatantly and shamelessly ripped off. And while it's a fun little franchise, I'm no major HG's nutswinger. I just can't believe the proximity of the film's releases and how much this one steals. When you're trying to find a movie that your 9 year old can still watch but still won't bore the everliving shit out of you - you usually end up with something pretty ho-hum.

The Interview - James Franco, Seth Rogan - ** out of *****
Not entirely bad, slightly amusing in parts. Franco was over the top to the point of actually ruining several bits in the film.

I just saw this film and I couldn't agree more with this post.
The Eminem bit was the best.

Requiem for a Killer ("Requiem pour une tueuse" 2011) - 4/10. Ridiculous boring-ass thriller about a bunch of professional killers going undercover in a production of Händel's Messiah. Mélanie Laurent is hot in it.

James & the Giant Peach - 7.5/10

Weird as fuck and certainly ambitious but really...after all it's hoopla, nothing really stuck.

Kudos for the creativity though although it came from a book written in the 60's.

A waste to watch sober which I was.

Direktøren for det hele / The Boss of It All (2006) - 8/10. Awesome absurd comedy by Lars Von Trier that looks like his earliest stuff. I was shocked to see this was made between Manderlay and Antichrist.

The Railway Man - 7/10. Set in 1980, but flashbacks to WW2, this Colin Firth film, with Nicole Kidman as his wife, is about a man coming to terms with the horrors he encountered by the Japs during the 2nd World war, and his eventual peace when he gets to meet one of the Jap soldiers who caused him so much grief back then.
Nicole does a good job being 'ordinary', great English accent too. Colin Firth is well cast and very good as the film titled man.
Some brutal war scenes, that would be uncomfortable for some IMO.

Heres a few of the Oscar/Golden Globe noms for this season;

American Sniper - Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller - ****1/2 out of *****
This is the story of Chris Kyle, the Deadliest Sniper in US history. Clint Eastwood directed, and for that alone, its a film worth seeing...not sure how many Clint has left in him. The story is based loosely on Kyles autobiography, but it was heavily added to by the screenwriter. The city combat scenes are done really well.

Foxcatcher - Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo - ****1/2 out of *****
Very well done film adaption of the Schultz brothers time at the Foxcatcher Wrestling compound with Jon du Pont, and the ultimate psychosis of du Pont and murder of Dave Schultz. Carell and Tatum both turn in stellar performances. Hopefully, the Twitter fiasco of Mark Schultz wont keep either Carell or Tatum from ant awards nominations.

Watching The Gambler right now...Mark Wahlbeg, John Goodman and Jessica Lange - ***1/2 out of *****...and I am about to turn it off. (Well, I finished it, and, surprisingly, it is better than the first 20 minutes or so would lead you to believe. It basically a character story, but its hard to take Mark Wahlberg seriously...I think it would have been better if DiCaprio had gotten the part as was originally intended.)

I still have "Selma", "The Imitation Game", "Inherent Vice" and "Birdman" on my screeners list...

Modern Problems - Chevy as the radioactived psychotronic powered unlucky in love schlub and Dabney Coleman playing a better jerk than normal - pretty fun dose of the early 80s style comedy. Nell Carter as DoRita is a plus. 7/10

Interview With The Vampire - wow. The most intentional homo erotic yet non gay film since Nightmare on Elm Street 2. It was all over the place. Not sure how to even rate it. I liked it though. Was it a big deal when it was released? And was this the UYI era GnR's last swan song as a single at the the end credits?

Payback - Mel pre-meltdown and Gregg Henry. Nothin' here to dislike, except maybe for the now very dated white guy pointing guns at people sideways thing. 7/10

American Sniper - 8.5/10

I dug it. Bradley Cooper put in a great performance here. I actually had myself forgetting his previous roles in this movie. I always think of him as the goofball type of guy from the Hangovers, but he's awesome here.

I can't help but think I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel at the local Redbox, these days. The last two movies I rented are easily the worst 2014 movies I saw all year....... Easy.

The Guest: 2/10
For the second year in a row, Richard Roper has conned me into seeing the worst film of the year (he did this to me in 2013 when he recommended I see the steaming hot shitfest known as The Counselor).
The Guest is one of those films that can't seem to make-up its mind of what it is, or wants to be. Is is a drama? An action film? A horror movie? Or perhaps worst of all a friggin' parody of all three?
The answer is none of the above, its just a pure suckfest. As a matter of fact, they should have retitled this The Suckfest.
I'm not even going to do into detail about this one, that's how bad it is. And how it got a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a thumbs up from Richard Roeper I'll never know.

I really wanted to erase the thoughts of this mess with my next film - which I had even lower expectations for....

No Good Deed: 3.5/10
Below average woman in peril movie, with plot lines you see coming a million miles away. About 5-6 minutes in, I already knew what was going to end up happening in terms of twists. It was a little more straight forward compared to The friggin' Guest, but I really can't recommend either.
