I have come across more people in America who hate sucker..err I mean soccer more than any other sport. I fully appreciate that soccer is the biggest game on earth but that's only because it's a poverty sport. I watch some of the World Cup because it's such a huge event but league soccer will NEVER be big in America. MLS is routinely ignored by the mainstream media and the ratings are beyond putrid.
I tried to give MLS a chance when Beckham came here in 2006 and it got tons of attention but it was a major snoozefest when he actually played. I tried to watch him on and off for a couple years but quit when I started falling asleep during games! Kicking a ball back and forth is NOT exciting!
To give you an idea how bad MLS ratings are even the WNBA gets higher ratings!
I loathe soccer. What's worse is the soccer fans that will try to make the argument that, "It's just like hockey but played on grass." DAFUQ? You're smoking grass if you think that the two are similar.
NHL averages somewhere around 60 shots on goal per game. Soccer is closer to 25 if you're lucky. Those guys just dilly around the middle of the field while hockey players are skating up and down the ice at 30mph.
And let's talk about how many pansy-assed dives that soccer players take while we're at it. Fucking pussies!
Not to mention that soccer moves at 2 mph and is slow and boring as HELL! Ice hockey is a FAR superior version of soccer played on ice with a puck instead of a ball.
It's not hard to find people who disagree on virtually every other topic but agree that soccer SUCKS!

You're wrong about that. It will only be a short time until someone comes in and tells us that soccer is the superior sport. And that's fine...you like what you like. But I hate it.
those that don't like soccer have usually never played it. you gain a bigger appreciation for the game that way. in some ways it can be compared to football. it's only exciting in small bursts.

Wrong. I have played it and it still sucks. Soccer is one of the biggest participation sports among youth in America but people here generally hate watching it.
There is saying in America. It goes something like "in America we play soccer so we don't have to watch it!".
I don't agree. American soccer sucks ass and is only popular in hipster towns like Portland and Seattle, who've adopted it trying to be unique and ironic about sports.
I didn't like soccer until we started getting more EPL and the bigger tournaments shown here. I've grown to appreciate it quite a bit and the World Cup is so freaking awesome that I get depressed when it's over.

Well it is two teams trying to score more than the opposing team in nets. Sure they aren't the same sport, but they have similarities.
And I'm a fan of both. In fact my ease into getting into hockey was from being a fan of football.

Agreed. There are similarities in the structure of the games but that's as far as it goes for me.

The HUGE difference is hockey is lightning fast while sucker crawls along at a snail's pace!

More than 99% of Americans don't watch sucker...err soccer so you KNOW I'm right! Along with everything else I said!
The 2014 FIFA World Cup match between the U.S. and Portugal produced another record-breaking ratings number for ESPN and Univision. The combined 24.7 million viewers—18.2 million on ESPN and 6.5 million on Univision, would make it the most-watched soccer game in U.S. history, just topping the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands.
Soccer, at least in its World Cup form, can now make a claim to being the second-most popular televised sport in the U.S., behind only American-rules football.
I meant LEAGUE soccer you idiot! Soccer nerds get all excited about Nottingham and Leeds and all this English football crap! But the ratings are miniscule here. Also MLS ratings are beyond putrid and actually lower than WNBA!
The World Cup is only once every 4 years and gets such big ratings because it is the biggest event on earth. Once it's over everyone goes back to ignoring soccer again!

I don't think many of you could compete at a high level in soccer.
Ever see a fat professional soccer player? I haven't. These guys are some of the best conditioned athletes in the world. Next to boxers.
I agree but that doesn't mean it's fun to watch! Marathon runners are a lot more conditioned than soccer players but watching a marathon sure as hell isn't exciting!
I love watching soccer... Played in a competitive league until I was about 35, and generally enjoy it. I hate the dives and wimpy behavior, but that's mostly in Mexican league and South American leagues (which shows itself in World Cup competition far too often). Premiere League and MLS are much better about that.
As for why it's not as popular in America... Because you have to pay attention for 45 minutes at a time. No commercial breaks to get a drink, no instant replay, no change in possession break, no time outs. That's also why baseball isn't as much fun to watch on tv - you never know when the next break is gonna be so it moves slower.
But if you weren't excited by some of the World Cup matches last year, I don't know what to say. Lot of great games!

I admitted the World Cup (both men & women) get good ratings in America because it's such a huge event. I watch it too and some games are exciting but other games are 0-0 and hardly exciting. The final 8 round is when it really gets good.
Then after the World Cup everyone in America goes back to ignoring soccer!
sometimes i have hundreds riding on a soccer game on saturday mornings and i still don't want to watch it..i find it more exciting to sit on flashscore and wait for a scoring update and hear the cheer the site makes when a team scores lol
when betting most soccer games over and under is set at 2 1/2 goals which is really not alot of goals in 90 plus minutes if you do your studying

mls has to compete with better leagues in england on tv. if you want to compare soccer with other sports combine all of the league soccer games not just the mls.
i find it hard to believe that more people watch the wnba that averages 7000 people a game(which seems REALLY high) then mls that averages 18,000 a game.
i didn't even know the wnba still existed. who shows it?
See for yourself below. MLS attendance is up but their ratings have gone DOWN! I've tried watching MLS but it's so mind numbingly boring I can't stand it! I've also tried EPL but I have no interest either because I have NO connection to Leeds or Nottingham or whatever! Plus it's almost as boring as MLS!
WNBA beats MLS in TV viewership
If ESPN had to chose between Major League Soccer and the WNBA, the numbers show professional women's hoops would be the way to go. According to a report from the Sports Business Journal, an average of 231,ooo viewers tuned into WNBA games this season on ESPN. In comparison, an average of 220,000 people watched the MLS on ESPN and only 112,00 tuned in on NBC Sports Network. The ratings were a drastic improvement for the WNBA - which just signed a six-year extension with ESPN - and another drop for MLS.
I'm a soccer fan who don't watch basketball. I'll play basketball but stopped watching during the 98-99 lock out...Didn't know the Net's moved to Brooklyn till last night.
If they showed as many soccer matches as basketball games I'd watch.
