Didn't Oakland need a reliever? How the fuck Mattingly let's this guy to put on his cleats is beyond me. Let alone allowing him to Kill Games. I edited the post to fit, but what do you do with a Pitcher like that, BENCH WARMER!

Brewers GM Bob Melvin stepping down to step into an advisory role. I don't know about you, but that sounds kind of like "everybody gets a trophy" for executives to me.

Matt Williams close to being terminated. I was always a fan of the guy as a player, but hate the Nats so it's bittersweet.

The Mets and Cubs are both on fire right now. That end of the season scene change we all adore.

Chase Utley clears waivers. Can now be traded to any team. Has veto rights.

Yasiel Puig clears waivers. Pulled after unknown team claimed him. That dude is so talented, but I wonder if his production is worth the DL stints and attitude. I could see that guy destroying a clubhouse. Especially if you have a Mattingly at the helm.

Starlin Castro getting in work at 2B. Russel named SS.

August waiver update: Chase Utley clears, Yasiel Puig pulled back.

Jayson Stark @jaysonst
#Dodgers put Yasiel Puig on waivers last week, sources say. But he was claimed & pulled back. So he won't be traded this month.

This shouldn't be read as the Dodgers wanting to trade Yasiel Puig -- them pulling him back shows they want to keep him, in fact. The takeaway is that Puig can't be traded because players can only be placed on waivers once, along with the fact that some other team was willing to pick up the remainder of Puig's contract (roughly $1.86M left this season, plus three more years and $24.642M).

They were judging the market's interest. I think Puig will eventually be on the move. He's been injury-prone ( seemingly more so ) as of late and an issue in the clubhouse.

He's a dynamic player, but his negatives ( health and attitude ) seem to outweigh his production. Friedman is a pretty smart GM. I'll bet he could pick up some great prospects in return. Some GM's will overlook his maturity levels knowing he'll put butts in the seats.

I said it a page ago I bet Puigy has a streak of all star seasons. In about 3 years and two teams later.

I think it was a market test and maybe a wake up call for Puig.
The Dodgers will hold onto him. If it's a good offer I think you're right he'll be on the move. It will have to be legitimate, I don't see LAD actively seeking to get rid of him. With his reasonable contract and talent/potential-talent I get the feeling LAD is willing to work on his attitude and deal with his ego a little longer.
Puigy injuries isn't much of a problem because LAD's outfield is overcrowded. If LAD wasn't reduced to platooning Crawford back into the lineup Puig would be under the microscope.

LAD has sadly is more irritated with Andre Ethier's contract then Puig's baby antics.

Oh yeah, of course, my A's lost!!!
Nah. Puig's pretty streaky, but when he heats up he's pretty good. I know they've vaguely threatened Yasiel I just don't think it's at the level we assume. He's not exactly bilingual so I doubt the talk radio/ESPN rumors effect him too much. Plus I don't think LAD moves him until they give him a chance under new management. If the Dodgers don't win the series this year I think Mattingly's gone. If the next former Yankee player or coach LA brings in can't reel him in then I think he could traded.

I don't know what's up with your A's. The Donaldson trade was stupid as fuck, but Billy's on to something. Fuck the Dodgers but it's the same thing Utah and JohnK have to realize. Your GMs/FO is pretty smart so I would have a little faith. Beane, Friedman, and Epstein are arguably the best of the best.

This news is late but Doug Fister has been moved to the pen. Remember how scary it was supposed to be when Washington added him? I sure do. Speaking of which I think Williams is gone after this season.

The Giants and Phillies are reportedly in ongoing talks for Chase Utley. WTF? Why? SF has the best IF in baseball, unless Panik's back inflammation is more severe than originally believed this is stupid.

SF's issues are Pagan can't remain healthy, the SP depth behind Bumgarner is thin, and the bullpen has basically been the same since 2010. SF has been on a tear because of their pitching not approaching middle aged former superstars. This could be trading Josh Donaldson level stupid. Sorry DOWN2WHISKEY.

Toronto is on a 10 game win streak and is back in first place.

Clayton Kershaw is the 2nd Dodger ( behind Koufax ) with 6 seasons of 200K. He is also the 5th player in mlb history to accomplish the feat, oh, and he's perfect through 5 right now.

That's a history stat you'd wish to bet on. I like to picture some down on his luck old man sitting in the sports book laid down some $ on all home teams to win and is jumping for joy right now.

------------------------------------

Toronto = 10 game win streak
Yankees = 5 game losing streak 3-7 in the last 10
Equals - Toronto Bluejays lead the AL East 0.5

I'd never expected it going into the season but I'm loving it now, Go Jay's!

I didn't expect Seattle to choke either till the Trumob's started playing. Like kill added, Iwakuma no-hits O's, tosses 5th in Mariners history. Shame he wasn't around earlier but it still wouldn't have helped them get on base.

Kershaw loses no-hit bid in sixth tonight. After losing a perfect game in the 7th vs Mets July 23rd.

Good pitching battle tonight

LAD 3 f
Kershaw - 8IP 3H 0ER 0BB 8SO
Zimmermann - 7IP 2H 1R 1ER 1BB 9SO - firing 71 of his 93 pitches for strikes. His lone walk, to Joc Pederson, led to his only run he allowed.

You've made me a firm believer in Friedman an the front office. Over the past 5 years they'd just toss money in all directions while giving up the farm. Now there's a huge difference in their decision making, it's getting easier to get use too. I agree with a lot of their moves after spending years of banging my head against the wall.

My faith is like what the Giant's are dealing with, LAD has had so many key injuries at the worst time, they've yet to field a starting team. Brandon Beachy and Chris Withrow were already on the 60day DL...They opened the season with closer Jansen, Brandon League and Ryu on the DL. 4 games in Brandon McCarthy season ends with TJ. Ryu joins him with Tommy John. And it's been non stop, the rotation at one point had almost twice as many moves as the next highest team and the infield has been hit hard with Turner and Kendrick at the same time. Even the OF, Crawford's only put in 30 games.

Any other year this team would be in shambles but you got me believing in the F/O. I think the edge over the Giants is depth in the field and making better moves. Except for the rotation, 2 pitchers and who ever they call up or patch in. At least the shaky pen has one go down as one is coming back up.

The Giants edge is they have a knack for getting to the end and going on a streak. So the West is always interesting between those two at the finish line but the Giants are already proven, they've limped in and destroyed so it's easy to see how an LAD fan wouldn't have as much faith.

I respect the Giants and never count them out. But I do feel like they're hurting more then normal. Even with all the move the Padres made in the off season, you blinked and said, well, they're still the Padres.

DOWN2WHISKEY wrote:Interesting read from the Toronto Sun on how the Donaldson trade happened between the A's & Blue Jays!

Alex Anthopoulos made those moves, courtesy of something he learned from Billy Beane.

http://www.torontosun.com/2015/08/11/ho ... -donaldson
That's interesting and practically a complete opposite of what I assumed happened. I don't recall hearing about Anthopolous' persistence before. I know when Epstein came into the league as the "Boy Genius" he was notorious for calling about another team's superstar daily. I want to say I recalled reading him badgering Seattle for the King, moreso than anyone else.

And Utah anything was better than what LAD was doing, but bring in the GM that built up the Rays from a laughingstock? Goes to LA with money Tampa just didn't have and a farm like the one he built there. He's also the dude that found Madden, there is no way Mattingly survives.

In fact I believe SF's move with Sabean's extension to VP of Baseball Operations so he could do more scouting, was the perfect counteract with their rivals. Sabean was due a promotion, but the timing couldn't have been better.

I haven't been able to see as many Seattle games this year, but I have a friend that believes McClendon is partially to blame. Considering all the coaches they've had post-Pinella ( Melvin's working out for Oakland though ), McClendon looks like John McGraw comparatively. I just can't understand why they just can't get it going.

This season has been weird. Dominate pitching, but almost everyday someone almost hits for the cycle. It was Lorenzo Cain earlier. Carlos Gonzalez yesterday....

Both beautiful catches. Rizzo standing one on the tarp and one in the front row for the catch makes me laugh but I like Seager's over the shoulder wicked adjustment. 2 x NICEEEEEE. I didn't notice one cute chick in the Chicago clip. Must be a Cub's thing?

Kill, I totally get what you're saying finally. I didn't know these F/O guys from a hole in the wall. Watching LAD growing up it was always Pitching and Defense end of story. Then they started playing with NYY and Boston buying teams and didn't have a clue how to put a team together. Just tossing money in every direction and burning farm pissed me off.
What they're doing now is a big improvement on another level, took a bit to understand but it's clearly more tactical then let's buy up the highest players like NYY or Boston. At least NYY could get lucky and buy a winning team every decade from the dawn of time. LAD just proved you can spend enough money and finally go to the playoffs and the NLCS before crashing. It wasn't the same feeling. Buying over developing.
Going into this season I didn't think LAD would have a chance, in such a short time they're a much better organization and team then the two pitchers + Agon that I imagined. Even with the injuries and limping around I like this team more then the last few winning seasons.
It's like they have a plan now. And that's shocking.

My only beef, was getting rid of Gordon without return, after watching him go from a nothing scrawny kid to sucking to being a player. I don't know how it went down but LAD contracted the infield with too many banana boat players and someone had to go is they way it looked.

That's a good read D2W, Bean still should have told him to fuck off about Josh!
I love the bay area, and I like the A's. It would be hard to be an A's fan. They're like the MLB's factory to build up players and ship out. Like they're in a rebuilding phase every year.
It's similar to being a Raider fan, I can never get attached to a player because they're normally gone when they want more money. It's been a rough decade.
I also get a kick out of the bay area attitudes, Frisco is the pompous side "look at us! we're so pretty!" then you cross the bridge to blaaaa. It is funny how Niner and Giant fans are such a different breed even tho they're separated by a bridge...Or tunnel....BART.
Frisco fans always have a glossy something to prove arrogance while the other side has more of a fuck you type of comeback. I don't know, it's hard to explain but I bet all the rich fuckers in the bay area are San Fran fans.

I would have loved to have stayed there longer. The only thing I didn't get to see was an A's game, always wondered if it was a better Baseball park then a stupid football stadium. It's still my Graceland. That reminds me I've been wanting to buy an A's hat.

I'm moving boxes and ran across my collection of those hard plastic hat's the other day, had them since I was a kid and added a couple when I hit a new park. Shame they don't come back in style....Not really.

Toronto became the first team since 1954 with two 10 game win streaks.

I just read an article on the King signing with Seattle when he turned 16 ( $710, 000 ). They had been watching him since little league. They also weren't the only team hot on his trail. Both the Yankees and Braves were scouting him too and were offering more money.

The King and his family liked Seattle's plans for him better. Plus the Ms had just traded for fellow Venezulan Freddie Garcia. "Como este', nino?" Was the first thing Garcia said to Felix and pretty much made him happy to be there. He's loyal to the PNW.

The Mariners have a rep of treating the players well. There problem ( IMO ) is they try to develop players all the same. I remember when Ackley was the "can't miss" prospect ( drafted over Trout BTW ). Their FO needs a lobotomy. I'll bet Ackley becomes the guy we all thought he would in NY next season.

*ETA

Continuing on my King Felix post I wanted to add this pic I found a while back of him in little league.

Image

I wonder if seeing the King when he was that young was the same when I saw him at 17. I've recounted that numerous times here ( 3 times seeing him ). You knew then "holy shit! This kid is going to be fucking amazing when he gets to the bigs."

I got to see a lot of Seattle's current roster coming up. They're all talented. The only superstars I saw though coming up was King Felix and Tim Lincecum, although I believed ( same as the FO that Dustin Ackley was going to be very good too. I think he will in NY ). I saw Chase Headley and Jason Bay a lot too, but they were both above average players, actually I never thought Headley was that good.

Losing an arm is always tough, but it's not like they lost Rivera. As much as I dislike LAD ( always been a Laker hater too, but love Magic...go figure ) I am impressed with their play considering the injuries they were dealt. That bullpen though or lack there of will be there undoing....if Mattingly doesn't destroy them first.

I'm watching the pen get tore up as we speak. Avilan 2 batters 3ER's, baez follows with 2 batters 1ER, Howell just gave up a single, a double and a HR to Hamilton and Mattingly is taking the walk to put in our 6th pitcher....Break time.
It would be nice to have a decent arm let alone a Rivera but when you have a shaky bullpen to start with and they start going down you're really hurting.. Kenley Jansen started the season on the DL and has been on the IR more then he's been healthy. He's the only guy who walks out of the pen where you don't say to yourself....FUCK, here we go.

What's worse was watching a Latos pitch well then toss a pick off throw error that turns into runs followed by a missed catch by the back up 3rd baseman to stop a stolen base that turned into another score.
Latos pitched well but not by looking at the stats. 2 errors, a missed catch and he's given up 4ER and is out of the game in the 4th.

LAD 3
CIN 10

So ya, I'm getting drained by all the injuries. Just like watching your stock's drop in the market. This is by far the worst year I've seen. Not exaggerating every day it's someone else. The bright side is how they're hanging in there and taking it on the chin. Plus the possibility some of these guys could come back soon or in time to keep the ship from sinking.

I'm very impressed they've done this well with this team. And how they've over come the injuries. I should be happy.

Yankees @Jay this weekend. Toronto expecting 50,000 fans for each of the three games. Sounds like a pennant race to me. Jays fans are lame. They are only interested when their team is winning. After this 11 game winning streak their fans and the media suddenly realizes that a MLB team actually plays in that town.

They can't be anywhere as bad as KC Royals fans! I live in Kansas & for 28 years, nobody in KS or MO gave two shits about them til last year! Now all these fairweather fucks are everywhere & have the worst attitudes you could imagine!
You have a point. Suddenly I see KC caps in my area and that only started last October.

I bet he ends up with more hits than Pete Rose!
Overall possibly. Health permitting he should reach 3K in the US. I want to see him surpass Rose. Then maybe we could quit hearing the whining of the "Hit King" not being in the HOF

Matt Kemp completed the first cycle in Padres history.

The cycle is such a silly thing to put on a pedestal. I mean, it's a nifty novelty, and any time you get four hits in a game is awesome, but it has no real meaning. The cycle gets more attention than two HRs and two doubles would. The other day the base coach was dissuading a guy from heading to third so he could get his double for the cycle. Ridiculous.
