Former Cardinals Scouting director ( ? ) Chris Correa pleads guilty to hacking into Houston Astros database. He apparently did it because he thought Houston had info on St. Louis' scouting....so he was checking that out. Apparently it was ( believed ) to be an act of vengeance on Luhnow for leaving St.L for Houston. As quoted:

"There are people with the Cardinals who think Luhnow took credit for lot the things St' Louis has been doing for years. It wouldn't be surprising that any chance they would take to embarrass him, they would take it."

Luhnow has turned the Astros into a force. Like Epstein did with the Cubs or Zdurincik's retarded ass was supposed to do with Seattle. Kind of a Brad Pitt-less Billy Beane. The Cards are always good. Always. I wonder though if that was Luhnow now. I wonder if there will be a changing of the guard so to speak.

Fuck Selig for bringing Houston into the AL. The Astros/Cards rivalry was awesome in the early 2000s. I still think the Cardinals fans giving Houston a standing ovation after they knocked them out of the NLCS in 2005 was epic.

It still blows my mind three people didn't vote for Griffey Jr. What. The. Fuck?

You mean those very same Marlins who've won 2 WS?
Yes. Those very same ones. Loria is still the owner and has been fucking the team for a while now.

Reds will induct Pete Rose(the hit king) into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
"Inducting Pete into the Reds Hall of Fame will be a defining moment in the 147-year history of this storied franchise," Reds CEO Bob Castellini said in a statement. "He is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Reds uniform and it will be an unforgettable experience watching him being honored as such."

The Reds will also retire Rose's No. 14 as part of their Hall of Fame weekend June 24-26 and will unveil a statue honoring Rose at a later date. At a news conference announcing his induction, Rose was asked what he'd want the statue to portray.

"Well, I sure as hell don't want it to be me standing at the $2 window at Turfway," he said, poking fun of his gambling reputation.

About time Pete gets the recognition he deserves as a ball player. Just look at the guy, he has a sense of humor about his situation and reputation. Why can't MLB embrace this and turn a wrong into a right?

He has the recognition he deserves AS A BALLPLAYER. He is still the Hit King and his records are intact and admired.

The deal is he broke the biggest rule in the game when he bet on it, wasn't truthful about it, and really hasn't changed. I hope they uphold his lifetime ban. Fuck the Hit King.

Kill-That's all I'm asking for. About time the BBHOF gets out of the 60's and gets current. Sorry HOF, but there are baseball players in the last 50 years that were great, worthy of induction, but they cheated or bet on the game. Previous inductees are guilty of the very same so stop pretending the BBHOF is full of model citizens because the BBHOF never was that.

How many are in the Hall post 1919 that were gambling?

Speaking of which Yu Darvish's brother was arrested in Osaka, Japan for running a gambling ring that bet on MLB and NPB games. Aa per mlb protocol Yu's involvement ( if any ) is being investigated.

Kill-Pete is the only player that I know of who is worth of an induction as a player and not yet in the BBHOF.

FU, Yu. I remember teams were clamoring after the kid and the Rangers were foolish enough to post the highest bid. How is that working out for you Ranger fans?

Justin Upton gets all the money from the Tigers for being an average player and very streaky. WOW! Talk about overpaying. Just because the owner is wealthy does not mean he needs to spend that money foolishly.

Joe was suspended for also the same reason Buck Weaver was. Even though Buck refused to partake or accept money, since he was aware of the fix and didn't narc his boys he was found complicit.

Aroldis Chapman won't have DV charges pressed against him.

Fat Panda has dropped 20lbs. Fat Panda drops 20lbs. before the start of every season. He gains it back by June. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Yoenis Cespedes is deciding between Nats and Mets. Would prefer NYM. I'm kind of surprised he still hasn't been picked up. Makes you wonder why? He's been said to be a "me-first" player. Like Fat Panda or Puig. And he's streaky and injury prone, but he's so talented. I dug the fuck out watching him in Oakland. The real NL MVP.

Harper didn't make the Playoffs. If that's no longer a protocol why does Trout only have one MVP?

Fuck bringing the DH to the NL.

Fuck bringing the DH to the NL.

Fuck the DH in the NL. Fuck the DH all together. Instead of adding the DH to the NL, the DH should be abolished. Pitchers should be forced to hit. If for only when they bean a hitter, they must step into the box and face the consequences.

Agreed.
I'm against the DH and pussy pitchers who wont take batting practice. They act like they're too good to hit and it's not their job. I wounder what Babe Ruth would say to that.
I don't care if it extends the career of some old players it takes from the Chess Match of the game and some other players maybe a shot at more Pinch Hits. Not to mention fucking with the stats and HOF arguments.

Baseball is a lot more then hitting...........

I've mentioned before, when I was injured or the times I was asked to come DH I hated it. Even in games I crushed the ball I didn't feel apart of the team. Sitting on the bench as the players take the field sucked, just so I could get off my ass 4 times to hit? I felt like a spectator. It's lame. I hated it.

I don't like the DH, it's pussy. I'm use to it but I'll say this.
If they leave it in the AL I'll live.
If they take it out I'd support it.
If they add the DH to the NL I'll be pissed.

I feel ya. I was a good hitter, but never with enough power to be a DH. My offensive game was based on speed.

Oritz talked about DH'ing and stating ( paraphrasing ) it's hard sometimes. To just sit on the bench until your AB. I can imagine. I always played SS and hit leadoff. My head was there the whole time. I can't imagine being a DH.

The team announced it will retire Piazza's number during a pregame ceremony July 30. The Class of 2016 Hall of Famer spent 8 seasons with the Mets.

Piazza deserves this. Maybe the Yankees have spoiled me a bit but I just wonder why more teams do not retire numbers. Sure the PED controversy will hang like a dark cloud going forward, but some of these players still deserve the honor of having their number retired.

Manfred says the DH to the NL is not happening anytime soon. Most owners are against it. Good.

Cespedes supposedly turned down 110m from Washington to stay with NYM. He has an opt-out after the first year and 2017's free agent class is pretty thin. That dude's got a helluva agent.

Astros pitching prospect 20 year old Jose Rosario was killed in a motorcycle accident Sunday in the Dominican Republic.

Tim Lincecum ahead of schedule in hip surgery recovery. Sets February time table to pitch for interested teams. About 20 have requested his medical records. The odds he resigns with SF are slim since he wants to start, and they don't really have an opening.

Jose Fernandez's reps ( Boras Inc ) think he could be worth 30m annually when he hits free agency in 2018. A Tommy John surgery and shoulder issues upon his return? Get the fuck out of here.

I've never heard that about Oritz or any DH. I'd love to know how DH players feel in that respect or see a story done, it would make a good segment. As I said even if I went 4 for 4 I still didn't feel apart of the team.

Luckily I was a good catcher who could hit and had pitchers who liked me behind the plate or I probably wouldn't have played much baseball.
SS is impressive, I played every position at least once and SS ate me up, I couldn't field anything cleanly.

I've read that in regards to more than just Ortiz. I wanna say it was ESPN magazine back in like '05 or so ( I had a sub, one of those door to door send my class to DC sales pitches ).

Anyways, Ortiz was talking about you feel disconnected when you just sit on the bench until your AB comes up. What he was able to do when he came up to bat you wouldn't have guessed that though. I was always opposed to the DH winning an MVP for that reason.

I will argue till the sun sets that a pitcher should be eligible, but not a DH. I fully agree with Arod winning over Ortiz in 2005. Ortiz had a helluva season....coming off the bench.

That said. The DH needs to go....or at least just never come to the NL. They won't be able to get rid of it though. A lot of players wouldn't get to play anymore that can't field, and there is no way the Player's Union lets that happen. The CBA is approaching ( next year? ), but I doubt that's even brought up.

John Dewan's Stat Of The Week 01/25/16

Since taking over as the Pirates pitching coach in August 2010, Ray Searage has demonstrated a unique ability to maximize pitcher effectiveness. Collectively, over the last five seasons, the Pirates have led the majors in soft hit percentage, groundball rate, and Batting Average on Grounders and Short Liners, and are second in two-seam fastball and sinker usage—all ingredients for sustainable success on the pitcher’s mound.

MLB Team Groundball Rate Leaders, 2011-2015
TeamTwo-seamers & Sinkers Usage Soft Hit Percentage
Pirates 29.3% 20.7%
Cardinals 29.7% 19.6%
Rockies15.1% 18.1%
Dodgers19.6% 19.7%
Padres 20.6% 18.6%
MLB Average 21.2% 19.1%

MLB Team Groundball Rate Leaders, 2011-2015 TeamGroundball RateBatting Average on Grounders & ShortLiners
Pirates 49.1% .233
Cardinals 47.6% .254
Rockies 46.8% .251
Dodgers 46.7% .238
Padres 45.9% .250
MLB Average 44.8% .249

Playing to these strengths, Searage and the rest of their coaching staff have given the Pirates a reputation as being one of the league’s most desired destinations for reclamation-project pitchers. Marrying Searage’s proven pitching philosophy with the team’s willingness to apply defensive shifts has allowed previously ineffective pitchers to flourish in the Steel City.

The results for pitchers under Searage’s guidance shouldn’t come as much of a surprise though. Two-seamers and sinkers tend to induce more groundballs than four-seamers and cutters due to their sinking-tailing action. Groundballs are most often converted into outs compared to flyballs and line drives, and far fewer of them end up as extra-base hits. And with the Pirates willingness to shift, there’s no surprise in the team’s ability to defend grounders and short liners well. But to fully understand the magnitude of Searage’s influence, let’s compare how pitchers' tendencies and performance changed after joining the Pirates. Since Searage took the reins towards the end of the 2010 season, the Pirates have acquired 10 starting pitchers during the winter months, including A.J. Burnett signing with Pittsburgh in 2012 and 2015 after stints with other clubs.

Starting Pitcher Performance after Joining the Pirates in the Off-Season, 2011-2015 SituationTwo-seamers & Sinkers UsageSoft Hit Percentage:
Before Searage 35.9% 17.8%
After Searage 38.6% 18.8%
Difference +2.7% +1.0%

Starting Pitcher Performance after Joining the Pirates in the Off-Season, 2011-2015 SituationGroundball RateBatting Average on Grounders & Short Liners
Before Searage 47.5% .245
After Searage 51.0% .236
Difference +3.5% -.009

Using a weighted-averages approach, as a unit the 10 starters saw an improvement in all four categories after coming to Pittsburgh. Two-seam fastball and sinker usage increased by 2.7 percent. Opponent soft hit percentage increased by one percentage point. Groundball rate rose by nearly four percent under Searage’s direction. And, as most would probably expect, the Pirates newcomers performed 9 points better in batting average against grounders and short liners. With new off-season acquisitions Jon Niese and Ryan Vogelsong seeking a pitching resurgence themselves, it wouldn’t be a surprise to many if they found success under Searage’s guidance in Pittsburgh.

That was fascinating. I literally had no idea he was that effective. I wouldn't take anyone over Dave Righetti personally. His body of work with SF speaks for itself. After Righetti I'm fond of Rick Honeycutt and Dave Duncan - Derek Liliquest.

Maybe since the Pirates don't have a Bumgarner, Kershaw, Wainwright in their ranks Searage is overlooked. He's turned that staff into a bunch of Derek Lowes. Pretty cool.

LAD and Howie Kendrick agree to 2 year deal

ARod needs 13 HR's to reach 700 & 28 HR's to pass Babe Ruth
Tex is 6 HR's and Beltran is 8 HR's shy of 400

Close to 100 years later and the only player to surpass the Babe is Henry Aaron. That's remarkable when you think about it.

Agreed, truly amazing for the Babe and Aaron. End of story *

On another note, I've lost all interest in the season and it hasn't even started. I think you mentioned once about Will Clark? I feel gutted and don't like how the MLB season is shaping up on paper.

I can't root for the Marlins anymore, I've had enough of Jeffrey Loria and hope the franchise and Mattingly fail bad.

I haven't followed the Tribe since I can't remember.

Don't have much hope for the M's

The Rockies are in the rockpile looking worse if that's possible.

Bryce Harper was a total bust as a likable player, remember me screaming MVP! I almost want him to pull a Jason Kendall now!

Aroid is still in the game

Just not feeling it.............I do have plans to see Iron Maiden in Denver and tickets to the Rockies vs Giants series April 12th and 14th with Maiden on the 13th.

I think I'll listen to Vin Scully on the Radio when I can and leave it at that.

I disagree. I'm excited to see how the NL West plays out. SF got scary good on paper, LAD's brain trust is subtly fixing what made them NYY West, was AZ really only an ace away, Colorado is....well, I have a lot of friends from CO and they're great people.

The NL Central will be a dogfight all season. Like NYY, St. Louis is always there, there's this team in Chicago that has all the pressure in the world on them and a ( former ) boy-genius at the helm.

I have a hard time rooting for anyone in the NL East, but I've always like Cespedes and seeing hairflip boy not win a WS makes me feel warm inside.

The AL East will be a battle of bullpens and wondering when Tanaka's arm falls off. I think Boston will realize how much of a bad signing Fat Panda was ( 4 more years ), and I hope Toronto is still in it.

The AL West is exciting. Houston was a year ahead of schedule and scary good, Seattle should considerably improve ( they also had a lot of injuries last year ), Beane is feeling the effect of his temper tantrum fire sale when they were eliminated, TX has Yu and Hammels, Trout will probably lead all of mlb in everything and not win the MVP....again.

The AL Central is irrelevant this season. I honestly can't think of anything but where will Chris Sale be traded too?

There's some good stories coming up.

I scooped up 2 tickets to one of the four games the Yankees are playing
in Oakland this coming May.
You keep saying his arm is going to fall off. I guess if you repeat that enough eventually you might be correct

How many days has he been on the DL for.....wait for it........shoulder issues? Take your time.

Tommy John has been recommended. He refused it. I doubt he lasts the season.

Chris Sale and Kershaw together would strike out more then most teams!

Shit, dreaming again.

The West will be the Giant's with no WC coming out of the division. The Cubs will sweep in every ROY, MVP, GG and CY category no matter how they do.
