"The Many Saints of Newark" - 7.5/10

This seemed to get a very mixed reception by "Sopranos" fans but I liked this quite a bit. It helped that I knew going in this isn't "The Sopranos" and so once I allowed myself to stop wanting to see that vibe, I was able to enjoy it for what it is.

The Dead Don't Die (2019) Adam Driver, Bill Murray. 4/10 Only got to 4 bc I like Driver and Tilda Swinton was great, what little she was in it. Zombie movie, abysmal.
Snake-Eyes (2021) As a GiJoe fan 3/10. As an action movie with an unlikeable main character and magic giant snakes, 6/10

Just watched the first Sleepaway Camp. I knew enough going in that I could pick up on some of the hints in the movie but that ending was something I can never unsee. 10/10

Delving into the big awards season movies currently. Who's seen what?

First two I've seen so far are "King Richard" and "Being the Ricardos."

"King Richard" is great. Really powerful and certainly is gonna net Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis Golden Globe and/or Oscar nominations. "Being the Ricardos" is pretty good but not great, The performances are very good but the movie feels a little slight, like a better version of one of those cable movies from the late '90s/early '00s. Think "The Late Shift" but upgraded (better writing, acting, directing and design).

"The Matrix Resurrections"... wow, this movie really sucked. I should have realized it would be more like the first sequels and not the original "Matrix" movie.

Don't Look Up 8/10 - So much wrong with this film, but it does entertain. The ending was hysterical, so sit through the credits if you want a great laugh.

Maybe not a movie per se, but just watched the "Night Stalker" mini series on Netflix.

Very good.

I never realized he was that prolific and kudos to the prosecutors for not going to trial on the child molestation charges to spare the kids going through that again.
Dude was toast anyway at that point.

A movie called "Mass" 5 out of 5 stars.

Story about a couple whose son was killed along with other kids in a school shooting. The parents of the shooter (also a student who killed himself) agree to meet and talk with the couple who lost their son. Basically four parents seated at a table trying to make sense of what happened. Acting is excellent.

"The Last Duel" - 7.5/10

This one was getting a lot of press for being a big awards season flop, but it's actually very good. It has a "Rashomon"-like structure where you see the story from different angles. The dueling stuff is great in this. Ridley Scott knows how to do this kind of historical brutality.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

I'll give it 8/10. If I wasn't a huge fan growing up, it would have been lower, but a continuation of the first two has been in the works for almost two decades, and I was glad to finally see it happen.

***SOME SPOILERS***

While it was largely rooted in nostalgia, it was enjoyable to see a continuation from Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. I don't count the 2016 movie, and while I'm not as up in arms about the all-female reboot as some people, it just didn't have any continuation into the storylines and I thought it was too forced in the roles being switched just for the sake of an attempt in equality. But hey, who cares? People saw it, some liked it, some hated it, and that's fine by me.

I purposely avoided reviews, spoilers, or previews/clips on this one. I've never, ever, ever seen (or not seen) a movie based on somebody's review (opinion) anyway (same as listening to music), but I especially wanted to wait on this one. I remember reading attempts over the last 10-15 years at making a third movie, and it always seemed like one of the original Ghostbusters wasn't into it (with Bill Murray ripping up one of the scripts), so it's unfortunate that Harold Ramis didn't live long enough to do this one, but I liked that he was part of the entire storyline anyway.

While I think most CGI attempts tend to fail, I thought what they did in this movie with Egon's character was appropriate and fitting with the scene(s) he was in at the end, and it was great that his character was responsible for a majority of the storyline throughout the entire movie. Nice touch on revealing the effect of him "abandoning" his family (and the other Ghostbusters) until you realize why he did it. It was a nice touch hearing the tributes from the other Ghostbusters and a nice little farewell to a favorite character from childhood at the end. Silly, a bit cheesy, but touching nonetheless, and nicely-done in terms of CGI graphics.

Like any of the previous Ghostbusters movies (Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Vigo, Statue of Liberty, Titanic returning, etc.), you definitely have to suspend disbelief, but it is what it is, and who cares? I like it. Nice to see characters from the first movie returning in this film, rather than something from Ghostbusters II.

I was very happy that Paul Rudd didn't turn it into a silly comedy movie. While there were some funny moments (or attempts at it), he was actually semi-serious in his role, and I appreciated that they didn't make a mockery out of it.

Since it was purely nostalgia in seeing this one, my "criticisms" are minor. Aside from Ray (the phone call scene), it would have been nice to see or (re-)introduce Peter and Winston earlier in the movie; their only appearance is in the very end. I get that they can't be the focus of the entire movie in their old age, but come on, they're the Ghostbusters! Them just showing up all of a sudden surprising the others at the end of it to help fight ghosts seemed too random; it would have been nice to have that build-up like in Ghostbusters II... Louis Tully getting them out of that psych ward and they were going over Vigo's plans and how Oscar and Dana played into it. I always liked that scene, combined with Bobby Brown's "On Our Own" fitting the mood where you knew they were about to kick some ass. This movie was a little too cheesy in the dialogue and relationship between three (much-older) Ghostbusters confronting Gozer, when you had an idea of Gozer's capability/power, but... it worked.

Like I said before, if I wasn't a fan of the series growing up, this would have been a lower rating (maybe 6/10), but like any fan of it from childhood, it was time for another movie. I'm glad they didn't wait much longer (let alone another decade) when more of the cast might not have made it.

RIP Harold Ramis. Fun movie.

I don't think people read my shit in the first place, but...

...THIS is huge white font. (I'm big, but not THAT big.)

This is large white font, fewer calories than huge white font. Since the average age on this board is over 50, it's probably easier to see with the fading eyesight. I thought I'd get the tl;dr instead, so I'll take it.

When the Wind Blows 10/10 Excellent, yet very sad animated film about a charming British couple, James and Hilda, and how they deal with the end of the world in the form of a nuclear bomb. Sad because they clearly want to get on with their lives in the aftermath, and obviously cannot. Their slow decent into radiation sickness is very painful to watch. :(

The animation is pretty simple. No computer effects, and they mixed stop motion with the coloring.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/sb4R8I03C9Y Severin films has the rights now, which is kinda weird considering their main film library consists of cannibals and satanists.
