Let's face it
Most of the bands we discuss on here have become incapable of writing a hook.
New GNR tune sucks. Dokken tune was a snoozefest. Extreme song had an awesome solo but was otherwise completely forgettable. Metallica album was boring as fuck.
I'm getting into jazz these days. I've heard all there is in the Sludge genre and feel no need to check out whatever Def Leppard can scrape together for an album in 2023.
To keep some dignity, most of these acts would be better off not recording anything new. Most of them probably shouldn't tour either. But I guess seeing live videos of clusterfucks still provides us with some entertainment.

Re: Let's face it
You are mostly correct. There does seem to be a limit of good songs in a musician. However, there are still some bands putting out great music. Winger's new album is pretty good. Accept has never disappointed me. The last Judas Priest album was good. The great thing about places like Spotify is you can check out the new music before you decide to buy it. Back in the day I was burned by buying music and finding out the album sucked. Looking at you Kiss - The Elder. I don't agree with you regarding touring though. I have been very pleased with every concert I have gone to the past few years.

Older bands sometimes think they don't need a second opinion and the record company isn't as invested anymore.

Yep. Bands used to have a real producer. The label would reject shitty stuff. Now they record fast and on the cheap. The labels (mainly small now) just want product to release.
Used to be million dollar budgets. Now it's $10,000.

I disagree about Extreme. Rise, Rebel and Other Side of the Rainbow all are fantastic, and go over well live. Banshee isn't quite as good, but was still memorable.

Really? I thought Banshee was by far the best of the bunch. I played that video at least 20 - 30 times. I really liked that song.Anthrax442 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 3:00 pm I disagree about Extreme. I'd never really considered the reason for the decline in the quality of our beloved bands new material was due to lack of a producer with a critical ear, but that is a very good point. Also, since bands make fuck all on album sales anymore I have to wonder if they are putting the same effort into the making of their new songs. I can see where it would be difficult to give it your all when coming up with new stuff when most people only want to hear the "classics" and you're not going to see any financial gain from new material anyway.
Another thing the bands we love around here have been around so long they just don't have the hunger and enthusiasm they did when they were first starting out. Age is a killer. No way around it. Viagra helps a bit, but it's just not quite the same.
Finally, and saddest of all I believe that all the best music (especially for the straight ahead rock that this board is based around) has been written. There are only so many ways to combine 12 notes over a 4/4 beat that can exist. Especially since only a fraction of those 12 notes sound good one after another.
I often wonder if maybe the same thing was being said in '62 and then The Beatles came along and changed that line of thought, but I don't think so. Sure there is complex stuff yet to be written, but as far as songs based around big simple riffs like Balls To The Wall or Rock Of Ages I think the well is pretty damn dry. I suppose you could add some synths to the music and there are some unexplored directions there, but that isn't really the kind of metal that we all love. One thing that is fortunate is that no matter how many times I hear Bloodstone or Suicide Solution or The Last In Line or even Bastard I still get a charge of excitement. It's not like hearing them for the first time of course, but considering I've heard those songs literally hundreds of times and still get something out of it is remarkable. You all take care now.

I dunno. It's not bad, I wasn't trying to slam it, I just didn't think it was as good as the other three. I just saw them the other night in Gary at the Hard Rock, and the other three definitely went over better live.Ryan81 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 10:02 amReally? There is definitely something to be said for what seems to be trading "producers" for "engineers". Both are important, but it seems like with everyone trying to do things on the cheap the last twenty years, with home studios and pro tools, that albums just aren't made in the same way anymore, and a lot of the "Producers" have shifted over to Pop music where they can still make money, and we're left with guys like Andy Sneap and Jay Ruston producing EVERYTHING that isn't self produced, so everything ends up sounding either sounding the same or amateurish.Ryan81 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 10:02 amI'd never really considered the reason for the decline in the quality of our beloved bands new material was due to lack of a producer with a critical earAnthrax442 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 3:00 pm I disagree about Extreme. Doesn't really explain why Alice Cooper has fallen off a cliff since Welcome 2 My Nightmare, since he's stuck with Bob Ezrin, but maybe Bob is just old and doesn't care anymore.

Re: Let's face it
I think as we’ve all aged, new music doesn’t have the same impact. We reminisce about the old tunes and albums. Motley could put Too Fast for Love today in their 60s and it wouldn’t resonate the same way as when we were 16.
Music was about our lives at the time just as much as it was about the tunes.
Plus, most bands want to ‘progress’ from what got them famous. Why? I don’t know.
A great album apparently is like lightning in a bottle. Right time, right tunes, right band members, right attitude, right producer, etc..
Just look at Guns n Roses. One great album, Izzy leaves and it’s never been the same. They can’t even write a song, let alone a good one.

Re: Let's face it
It's really shocking. Melody dies with each year aged. Pretty much every new release from the still arena giants is on the verge of finding the hook and never gets there. Main focus is on booked dates and get new product out that is a fraction of revenue stream if it's realized or not. Most bands can't stand to be in the same room at this point unless paid and lights are on. New GNR is prime example.

Re: Let's face it
Although rare, there are bands that consistently release high quality music for decades.
Deep Purple have been releasing great albums the last decade. They are all pushing 80.
Duran Duran's last few albums have all been great with their latest being one of their best. They're all 60+.
Dave Mustaine still has some great songs in him (a few on every album).
Not all the wells have dried up.

The method of recording now a days sucks too.
Albums don’t have that BIG, LIVE sound anymore. Each member of the band emailing pro tool files to one another is not the way to record a real album.
