Who hid their 80s history better? Marvelous 3 or Beautiful Creatures?

Post by gtrjay »

Who did a better job at hiding their 80s history as band?

Southgang into Marvelous 3 or Bang Tango into Beautiful Creatures. Sure it wasn’t all of bang tango but the singer was the face. Anthony Fox lied about his age which is classic sludge. DJ ashba was in Bulletboys but honestly can’t remember if that was before / after beautiful creatures. Kenny Kweens has history on strip. Number 9 / Shake the Faith. And Glen is just an animal on drums.

Maybe not exactly the same but red apples to green apples in hiding your history vs apples to oranges.

Hell an old friend that worked at Best Buy at the time. I showed him BC CD and told him history and he said “no way this singer is 24”. I knew from Sludge!
I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. These two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

Butch Walker is the runaway winner in this category. I liked those 2 Southgang records but wow... what an amazing success story he became. He could just as easily have just got a new singer and continued his career under the Southgang name with all the other 80's bands.

The only other guy I can think of that found greater success is Jonathan Daniel from Electic Angels and the Loveless who went on to manage tons of great artists, including Butch Walker if I'm not mistaken!

Pantera, too. It was a pretty big leap from Glam-tera to Pantera, IMO.

Beautiful Creatures TRIED to hide their history and failed miserably, and then it blew up in their face. Marvelous 3 never seemed to try and hide it as it was 3/4 Southgang and they weren't lying about their age. The band that hid it best from that 2000s era was probably Lit.

The heavier bands somehow avoided it for a quite a while, like Pantera and Alice In Chains.

Didn’t matter. Both were complete flops. BC only charted on the “special” Billboard charts. M3 topped at #196.

Both completely irrelevant bands.

Surprised no one mentioned Ministry. Saigon Kick tried to do something similar and have never been heard from since.

Phil Anselmo in particular. Most people know Dimebag was Dismond Darrell but not that Anselmo still looked like Bret Michaels meets Sebastian Bach when he was in Pantera.

Panterrible. It took them until their fifth album to "find their unique look and sound".

Alice in Chains maybe, but they didn't have any formal releases with Diamond Lie or whatever.

Ministry changed pretty quickly, and Uncle Al is performing "Revenge" in concert again.

Alanis Morissette. If 80s type pop albums from the early 90s count.

Good call.

How about Michael Bolton? His S/T and Everybody's Crazy were pretty solid AOR.

I remember walking around Key Club with some dude sounding like Bang Tango guy..turns out that was him!
He mentioned this was BC first show. Headline band that night was phenomenal
BC better than Bang Tango..incredible 1st cd
Who didn’t want to be Southgang in Tainted Angel video
Marvelous 3 is garbage but they found some success good for them. Just be torture for Marvelous 3 signing those CDs instead of Southgang and forced to do M3 tours

I feel very fortunate to have lived in Southgang and BC eras
Always felt proud to see that Ashba guy with Axl..he won like we all did
Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

They used to be called slamhound and played sunset strip. I think $tevil shared a story on this years ago but could be wrong.

And? My buddy rehearsed in the same space as them when they were just starting out and called Sparrow. Always been 80s to the bone...
