Did anyone fall further from grace than Grand Funk?
They were fucking gigantic and now barely play county fairs.
I cannot think of a bigger band that is so forgotten and known for a few songs.
All 3 original guys are alive and healthy you'd think they would get their shit together for a final cash grab.

So he turned his

How much cash is there to grab at this point? Who's clamoring for the reunion? Not enough to get them off the corndog circuit.

Re: Did anyone fall further from grace than Grand Funk?
Looking at their website, they have/had close to 50 dates in 2024. Mark Farner is 75 years old, not sure how many more dates he wants/is physically able to play.

Maybe Blood Sweat & Tears?
Re: Did anyone fall further from grace than Grand Funk?
Mark Farner is not involved. He looked pretty energetic at his solo show.
But they fell pretty fast in the 1970's and had an early 1980's reunion that also sputtered to a halt. The 2 or 3 reunion shows they did in the late 1990's did pretty well but Mark Farner only wanted to play on special occasions and not run it into the ground which is why they forced him out.
Leon Russell also played arenas in the early 1970's and declined in popularity rapidly around the same time.

Skid Row? First album 5x platinum, 2nd #1 and also multiplatinum, singles all over MTV, playing Wembley and Moscow Music Peace Festival even if not headlining - to opening for the likes of Saxon and Loverboy with a revolving door of singers.
For non-Sludge bands, Ace of Base. Probably the most forgotten band to ever go Diamond in the US. They were somewhat active until 2012 (with both girls replaced) but did anyone notice?

Gary Glitter
Lostprophets
Sold millions, then their careers collapsed literally overnight due to Gary and the LP singer being outed as paedos.
Gary still got a lot of royalties for years after his conviction but that loophole has now been closed.

A friend of mine was a tech on the 90s "reunion tour." They did a couple of shows in Japan and one in Hawaii. Farner made it clear that he wanted to talk about Jesus onstage. The band (and management) decided to cancel the rest of the tour.ijwthstd wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:41 am

Fun trivia:
Tour rehearsals were in Flint, Michigan. My friend was looking for some smoke. A local roadie told him, "Let's go see my friend, Jimmy. He usually has something." They paid a visit to the guy and bought some hash. My friend didn't recognize him at the time, but "Jimmy" was Iggy Pop.

As long as I'm learning something, I figure I'm OK - it's a decent day.

I believe Kulick is finished permanently with GFR at the end of 2024. Max Carl is their lead singer and has been for years now.

Bee Gees had a pretty epic fall...they went from 16x+ platinum to not even gold two albums later.
I know they are big again now (tho mostly dead) but maaaaan, that fall had to hurt.

The only thing I know about Grand Funk is that in Bass Player magazine ages ago the bass player claimed to "invent" sliding up and down on the neck to make an effect, and said anyone who does it is ripping him off.
I laughed and stopped reading.

Re: Did anyone fall further from grace than Grand Funk?
What happened was they failed to hop on the 1970's nostalgia wave that hit in the 90s - a lot of bands reformed and started rebuilding their brands around that time. Same thing as 80s bands in the 2000s.
but Mark Farner was a fulltime Christian artist at the time. They tried a reunion, but as mentioned by another poster he was all-in on the born again Christian lifestyle and the reunion fizzled out.

I remember those times. When disco died they went with it and were the poster boys for it.
They were too good at writing songs though and had some hits with other artists covering their songs.

Always heard stories about Grand Funk selling out Shea Stadium but never really understood what happened. I guess Jesus wasn't down with the Funk!

He went born again in the mid 80s, after the reunion (From 1981-1984) fizzled out.
