Was Black n Blue the worst band from the 80s?

The one that started it all. Spreading gossip and insults since 1998.

Was Black n Blue the worst band from the 80s?

Post by skunklovestiger »

While I was on a road trip, Spotify suggested me a Black N Blue playlist. I was shocked how terrible those records are. The singer sounds so bad, he makes Steve Summers sound like Freddy Mercury.
The songs are some of the worst shit I have ever heard. Also the records that Gene Simmons produced are beyond terrible and boring.

Spoken just like someone who didn't take their advice to hold on to 18.

Yeah, it's not like things got better... there was a lot of worse crap that came out later.

They received much much more success than they deserved.

Miss Mystery is a decent song.

Edited! Originally, I said they were terrible. Then I realized there were actually truly terrible bands from that era. Someone mentioned KEEL. Yes. They were terrible. Lot of those Bang Tango type bands were terrible (were they the worst?)

BnB were like Kix. 2 good songs. Rest was shit. But those 2 songs were solid. Keep them from “terrible status.”

Quiet Riot had 2 good originals (Metal Health and Wild and the Young) with Dubrow. But they had the Shortino album. So that puts them above Kix and BnB.

First album was great.
They then, as many others, tried to write for radio hits, and failed.

Hold on to 18 is fucking awesome, so they get a pass.

Worst band has to have one of those bullshit names like Sleez Beez or an annoying as fuck vocalist, like Ron Keel.

Yeah, I think Britny Fox is where I said, fucking, what are we doing here? That was where my teenage self started to understand corporate rock vs authenticity.

Agreed. "Hold on to 18", "Chains Around Heaven", "School of Hard Knocks", and "Miss Mystery" rule, in fact.

They got it record deal at a time when that was all that mattered... and its not easy getting to that point a lotta bands considered the Finish Line,.. so much work for a shot at a deal.
Anyway, I have not heard a note from the band, but I have heard of them. So they can't be the worst or nobody would have signed them.

"The worst"?.......no, completely underwhelming?........yes,.
Imo, the first generation of Hair Bands (Black n Blue, Helix, Rough Cutt, Keel, Stryper, etc.) were all pretty mediocre with weak catalogs of material.

Agree. Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot weren't nearly as good as their sales would indicate either.

We all know Ratt and Mötley padded their albums with filler but at least they had a bunch of great songs on their 80s albums.

That being said is it ok to mention singer of the band who should not be named or do we have double standards on this board?

Add Dokken to the list. Remember, Black n Blue came out in the early 80's before Poison and well before Warrant, Danger Danger, etc. They would've fit in better with that crowd.

I personally love the 2 songs mentioned here the most (Hold On To 18, Miss Mystery). They had some other good ones too but they were always at the bottom of the list. No great guitar riffs, no super star lead singer, no big hits, just a decent 80's rock band.

You may have missed the album Ratt did after Invasion of your Privacy. Dancing Undercover is all filler no killer.

“Dance”, “Body Talk”, and “Slip of the Lip” would like to have a word with you. Those are awesome tunes. “Take a Chance”, “Looking For Love”, “7th Avenue”, and “Enough Is Enough” aren’t half bad, either.

Regardless, I think Vain and or Britney Fox are the correct answers here

They weren’t great, but I see people on here raving about bands whose songs I generally think are much worse.

Examples: Sleeze Beez, Roxy Blue, Trixter, Twisted Sister, etc.

I LOVE Black N' Blue... they are in my Top 5 from the heyday for sure!

Jaime is a great guy too... one of my favorite singers from the era.

When Skid Row came out, my thought is they were BNB on steroids... in all areas.

BNB were a little heavier. and not as 'image' driven as some of the others. which I felt was the case with SR too!

Of course, we now see after the fact, that SR and Bach. were as Glam Fag'd out as anyone, and only briefly just before their release 'dropped' the image!

Black N' Blue rule!
