Unfortunately that's not just an American thing. You'd expect Europeans who had to accept border changes decided from above to respect the legitimacy of a state that has existed continuously longer than say independent Czechia, Serbia or Lithuania, and just a few decades shorter than Finland or Poland.

I don't like everything about Israel, especially not how it developed after they took in all the ex-Soviet people in the last 30 years. But it's no more illegitimate than the countries I listed. An illegitimate state would be something like Isis, or Taliban Afghanistan or USSR that started with a violent overthrow of legitimate rulers.
