Super stoked to see the finished product... and honored to be included in this 3-part series!
I Have talked about this on here previously... and if memory serves me, I did this interview in the spring of 2023... about 1 1/2 years ago!
Who is ready for an 80's Hair Metal overload?
$tEvil![]()
I gotta ask though, you said that Tuff wasn't a great band (or something to that effect), you don't really think that, do you?
granted, you guys weren't Zeppelin or anything, but I quite enjoyed the Tuff albums.
""""""""""""""I gotta ask though, you said that Tuff wasn't a great band (or something to that effect),""""""""""""""""
Actually a few people have already brought this up to me, and I had to clarify, what I was saying and what I meant.
I did this interview back in spring of 2023, so I don't recall all of what I said verbatim, but... there was an "edit" here, and it kind of cut me off.
When I was saying this part, it was referring to early on in our career, meaning within the first 6 months...
What I was trying to get across here was "We had started to build up this local frenzy, we had the look, a big buzz, and all the labels were already coming out to see us, but... we were not that good of a band - yet!"
I kind of remember saying something about me being 21, Todd & Jorge were 20 and Michael was 19, and we hadn't fully found ourselves yet, we had only been in the same room for a few months, and we were already (behind Warrant and maybe Racer X) the biggest hyped up band on the Sunset Strip scene in a very short time.
Timeline ...
Tuff auditions me for the 2nd time, on Sat. July 11th, 1st audition was earlier that week, I believe on July 7th.
Tuff play our 1st LA show at The Roxy Aug 22nd (playing 2nd slot with Warrant on a 5 band bill, we did pay-to-play, and sold tix)
Tuff play our 1st show in Arizona in Phoenix in Sept. with Mistreated, who later became Asphalt Ballet.
Tuff play our 2nd LA show at Troubadour in early Oct. (1st slot of a 3 band bill) Headliner was Mon Cheri' feat: Johnny Martin of L.A. Guns.
Tuff play our 3rd LA show at Whisky on Nov. 6th as Headliner. Janie Van Halen-Liszewski was the promoter, she was 17 years old and paid us $500.00! Yes, I did!

Tuff play our 4th LA show at The Roxy in Dec. supporting Leatherwolf.
We literally played 2 shows in So. Calif. and 1 in Arizona and were already Headliner status and getting paid, less than 4 months from me joining the band.
In the doc, this was part of me explaining how our hype and buzz built so big, so fast, and how all the industry was suddenly focused on us, and we were not that good yet, not ready for that next step... but... once they all saw us, even a year or two later, the labels were all pretty much thinking "Nah, that's the Poison band, pass"
By the fall of 1988, we headlined The Country Club in Reseda 2x, selling it out, and here is 1 of those video https://forums.metalsludge.tv/forums/vi ... 9#p7796719
We had also started doing 2-nights in a row at the clubs in Hollywood, and even did a 2 shows in 1 night at The Whisky in Dec. 1988. We had The Zeros support, no other bands. The first show was full to the rafters, and started at 7:30-8:00 and ended by 10:00pm.
When the 1st show ended, there was a line down the street of several hundred people, lined up for the 2nd show. Not many bands did that during this time frame, but we did.
I felt like we were not 100% ready, but hindsight is 20-20! And this is me saying this now, in current times... but of course at the time, from July 11th 1987 onward, all 4 of us felt like we were invincible, and had NO shortage of balls, guts, determination, grit, tenacity, fire and more. We definitely felt like we were the best band on the scene at that time, and were willing to throw ourselves into it, head first no matter what the outcome.

I swear there was just a hair metal doc on Paramount last year (Candy’s “Whatever Happened to Fun” played during the credits every episode), but I still watched. Nuno’s Sebastian story was awesome

On one hand, I like that Corey waves the flag for hair metal and doesn't care about losing cred. On the other, he wasn't there on the Strip. He was too young so he's not speaking from any firsthand experience.MattleyCrue wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 7:42 pm I finished watching it tonight and I throughly enjoyed it! Episodes 2 & 3 were better, but these sorts of shows don't really anywhere deep enough for my liking. They're for the masses, not people who really love detailed rock docs.

Episode 1 was a bit of a mess. I expected better from Jeff Tremaine.
The timelines go back and forth -- first Crue's tour with Ozzy, THEN the '83 US festival? The US festival got them that gig. And no mention of Too Fast For Love?
Revisionist history that "Cry Tough" wasn't Poison's first single, six months before "Talk Dirty to Me" and it almost tanked the album.
And then for some reason, in the middle of the Great White piece, they show a still picture of Brian Vollmer from Helix. WTF??

I got a chuckle out of Stevie feeling that he needed to explain the 'melts in your mouth, not in your hand' innuendo.

I agree. The timeline and editing of some of the things was off and didn't make any sense. Some of it felt a tiny bit half assed. In the 3rd episode when Stevie is talking about being proud of what he's done and that he did it, I thought they were ending the episode with that since it felt like he just wrapped everything up. It felt like a natural end of the show. Then they jump into Poison fighting, which was entertaining, but felt like that should have been shown earlier in the episode.HoldenSSV wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2024 8:36 am Episode 1 was a bit of a mess. It's also interesting they didn't talk about one of the biggest hairbands of the era, Bon Jovi. But I get it. Obviously nobody from Bon Jovi was gonna be a part of this. And they also didn't get the rights to any music from Motley or Guns N Roses.
Overall it was enjoyable though. The clips of CC during the MTV Awards where he's wishing he had diabetes and busting Bret's balls were great. Alan Niven was also entertaining. That guy is trip.

Me too. Overall I enjoyed it. It was cool to see Warren DeMartini again, talk about getting the golden ticket.
Stevie I thought you came across just fine to me and it explained the whole timeline situation as it was.
And I hope you know whenever “I’m giving you the business” on here I’m delivering it with a obvious joking manner.
I love this place and you provide it all right here.
Some of the weird hateful stuff that gets said about you on here I don’t want nothing to do with.
So anyway peace to Stevie y’all.

"""""""""""""They're for the masses,"""""""""""""
This. ALL DAY!
Same applies to the Live Shows, Tours, Bands reissuingCDs, Vinyl, and so on . It's for the masses... who wander thru Wal-Mart, and the guy tells his wife, "Honey, look, it's a Motley Crue box set!" and she smiles and says "Not today... we have to buy the kids school supplies and their costumes for Halloween coming up".
But... she then buys it for him for Xmas, and it's under the tree come Dec. 25th! Along with a set of Weekend tix, to some random Casino in IOWA, that has a 3 night weekend extravaganza with Dokken & Lynch Mob on Friday nite, Vince Neil and Great White on Sat., with Bret's Parti Gras rounding out the weekend on Sunday.
And... guess what... they want to hear those bands HITS! Not... "Dogs of War", or some other horrible tunes recorded and released in the last 20-25 years, Nope, not happening.
The total die-hard, who has collected EVERY Kiss item, EVERY Crue item, EVERY GnR release, etc... these shows are not for them, they are built for the broader appeal, NOT the guy who knows every detail of every release going back to 1981.
Funny, while reading all the comments on IG, FB, and various online outlets, 85% of those who saw it, absolutely loved it.
Then there are the 10-12% who were okay with it, but wished it was longer, more episodes and the complaints of "Why wasn't Twisted Sister in it?"
Then we got those remaining 2-3% who hate it, and can't wait to attack it, "Why was he on there?", "The timeline was off", "How come it's not on Netflix?" & "I knew all of this already!"
This is for the random, fly-over state die-hards, who are still going to M3, MORC, every QR, LAG, GNR or Bret Parti Gras show... not the purest who is bitching about every last detail.
They don't care that Todd LaTorre fronts Queensryche, they don't care that Bach isn't in Skid Row and some don't even know that DuBrow, Lane and Crosby are dead.

""""""""""""""""'Did you get paid for being interviewed? """"""""""""""""
Me personally get paid, No.
But, they did License images, etc... from me, and yes, that included a check!

As for the Licensing for our Atlantic Records music, like "ANG" and "IHKYG", that would have been sorted through our Publisher (Sony Music Group).
As for who they decided to interview, reach out to, who turned them down, or how everyone else was approached or handled, I have no idea. But I can say, that I have read countless absolutely ridiculous comments, theories, and opinions online - both on here, and other like FB, IG, etc...
People saying "They probably didn't want to be interviewed, because they're not a hair band" or similar, is just stupid. I think it's safe to say, that any or most of the guys from those biggest bands. ie; GNR (Axl or Slash), Motley, Bon Jovi or Aerosmith had they been asked, most would have said "No" to almost ANY company, ANY production, ANY podcast or anything similar. They're all much bigger, richer, and 9/10 of those guys don't care to talk about 1985 at this point.
Of course when it was ALL about them, of course Motley Crue was all in on The Dirt, and they should have been, it was about them, and likely lined their pockets in a VERY big way after all was done! Same with Bon Jovi. who just released a huge documentary of their own, so it would have been silly for them to do this, and equally as silly for the NBAGT crew or staff try to get Jon, it wasn't going to happen.
"""""""""""""""""Have you noticed a bump at all in sales or anything?""""""""""""""""""""""

""""""""""""""""""How has the feedback been?""""""""""""""""""
Great! Phone has been blowing up all week, from people in the industry, other band guys, friends, fans, etc... it's been very good, I am happy to say.
Also... a few other notes... seeing a lot of people saying "Why wasn't it longer" or "It was too short". Well, I can tell you, I heard from the powers that be, it was originally planned, and they were looking to do 6 episodes, but money, and a budget, are real things... along with the time it takes to do all of this.
Find the talent, or subject you want to interview. Where are they located, when is your crew going to be in that city to shoot it, who else is available at that same time, what are the circumstances surrounding this guy, or that band. There are tons of details to consider, just like a band going on tour... when fans are crying "Why aren't they playing Tulsa?" blah, blah, blah.
I recall this coming together and they were asking me my schedule and telling me the few days they were going to be in the Los Angeles area... same day they shot Snake & Rachel, at the same location as well. I was there first, they came after me, and I believe, someone else after them. Had I been on tour in Brazil that same week, maybe TUFF is not featured as much... maybe they would have interviewed Taime instead.
There are so many moving parts with this stuff... just like being in a band. booking a tour, picking the set list for the show, or how long you play that nite. Regardless of what you do, you can't make everyone happy... so you have to do first, what's best for you!
As for Bach... who knows why... he's been on a lot of these, maybe they opted to go to the band this time instead and get their perspective.

I'm not attacking it, I was making an observation. Details and accuracy matter in a documentary, especially when shit is blatantly wrong. You're honestly OK with Brian Vollmer being shown during a Great White segment? Stupid shit like that makes the producers/editors lose credibility.

This. Just because it's for the common fan doesn't mean you half ass it and put in wrong information. "Oh it's just for fly over states, Brian Vollmer, Jack Russell, who cares!" That's sloppy. Just because somebody has constructive criticism doesn't at all mean they hate it either. I don't see anybody in this thread saying they hated it. This entire message board is built on nit picking minor things and bitching, but we all wouldn't be here if we weren't passionate about the genre.HoldenSSV wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2024 5:05 pmI'm not attacking it, I was making an observation. Really impressed with Stevie and Tracii and how humble and grateful they came across.
Really cool to see the humanity and honesty with both. Very, very cool.

I'm glad someone asked Stevie about the 'we just didn't have the songs' comment because this was all after mentioning TUFF being all over Dial MTV, seemed out of place, which now we know it was.

I think my favorite part was the look of disgust on Reb Beach’s face when he said “You want us to talk about Beavis and Butthead”?
I was hoping Warren was going to mention the Mars candy bar fortune during the “where are they now” segment. I’m assuming that is the real reason he retired. Because he can.

Was the reason I loved the book so much. Don't know how the author(s) did it, but all the interviews seemed to get past all the petty bullshit/personal grudges and focused on the actual events the way they happened. Even the Bach stuff in the book was pretty good.
Haven't' checked this out doc yet, but definitely going to.

But of course, there are exceptions... and most of us know who these guys are...
The totally delusional asshats... who think their band today is better than it was back in the heyday, all the while including mostly scab members, etc... silly.

I enjoyed the series very much. I thought Stevie came off great.
Where was Bon Jovi in the Doc? They seemed like the biggest band of the era (along with Def Leppard). I realize that they focused on the sunset strip , but seemed like there were bands from other areas in there too.

That was quite good, fun, and sad in parts too.
I remember the Holmes pool scene from Decline back in the day, I thought it was something to aspire to then, hits quite differently now.
I was surprised how young Warren was when he joined Ratt.
Right at the end of the second episode someone said the signing of Guns n Roses changed everything .
I wonder, has anyone else suggested if that was the beginning of the end for Hair Metal?
Stevie, you spoke well.
Good for you.

I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. These two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

The Bon Jovi/Def Leppard being left out might be a cost thing. They have to shell out more $$ the more songs they license. The A listers charge much more.

Phil Collen and Pour Some Sugar On Me were in it actually! That clip and maybe some others were kind of random though. I'm not sure if they were shot specifically for this special.Rocker4Real wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2024 3:20 pm The Bon Jovi/Def Leppard being left out might be a cost thing.
