I downloaded that Vocal Pitch Monitor app he uses and man, I can't believe how much stuff we think is live actually has pitch correction added to it

I've always cringed watching a clip of his students singing Whitesnake or some shit. Many have decent enough voices, but they are nobodies that will never make it a career aside from maybe the bar band they front. IDK. It's all strange.

I can believe it. And to a degree, I don't mind too much if they are singing, though I prefer raw and imperfect. I don't listen to live recordings or go to concerts to hear reproductions of studio recordings. But now, with AI able to reproduce some shit like Take On Me with Ozzy's vocals, that's many steps beyond lip-syncing to one's own songs.

I'm not at all downplaying the talent of these ladies, but you almost never saw a male demonstrating these techniques on higher range songs like the pros do. It's just not as impressive when a woman sings in the Bruce Dickinson/Steven Tyler range. If the proof is in the singing, where are the all the guys singing these songs?

Point of personal privilege here. With the caveat that I am not a great or even good singer, I did take several lessons with Ron Anderson in the years before he passed. He worked with Axl, Steven Tyler for a time, Chris Cornell, and many others, many in the high/rasp/male range you’re talking about.

I was able to ask him, how did Axl hit some of those high notes on record with rasp and with your technique at the same time? His answer was, more or less, “I have no idea. You either have the natural ability to sound like that when singing properly or you don’t.” He was honest.

A huckster like KT is gonna claim he can teach dudes how to do it, and yeah, where is the proof? There is no way to do it “properly” if you have a naturally clean-sounding voice. Some can get away with shredding their throats for a time and sound halfway decent, but it’s rarely sustainable.

I agree. I have no training but sang and played guitar since I was 8. Sometimes in bands. Sometimes by myself. I always had a decent, raspy voice that was once tenor and then baritone. But I do not have the genetics others have. After a 4 hour night in a bar, my voice was shot for at least a day. Sure, you can be coached to sing from the diaphragm (use chest voice), which will help, especially with power. But to do it well, consistently, and on consecutive nights, you have to be genetically predisposed in the vocal folds. Otherwise, age and damage will eventually catch up to you, as we've laughed at many clips of rockers who lost it. Then there are those oddities like Mickey Thomas (not a raspy singer), who is still on point at 74.

I guess doing the goat tongue technique with pre-recorded vocals is the winning move.
