A breeze? GTFOH. AVH is good, but he would struggle playing Rush and DT songs.drumkey wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 5:20 am Whaaaat!!? Alex Van Halen is one of the greatest rock drummers. ever. There isn't anything that Peart, Portnoy, or Tommy Lee can play that wouldn't be a breeze for A.VH. What listeners decipher as good or great drumming comes down to style. Anyone who doesn't recognize that Alex brings truckloads of style to the music needs to take the KY jelly out their ears.

Absolutely . I have seen nothing so far to suggest that Alex would be able to pull off anything by Portnoy or PeartHoldenSSV wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 7:07 amA breeze? GTFOH. Alex is talented. But also my least favorite drummer in all of rock. His drumming ruins so many otherwise great tunes. King of cymbals.

Agree there’s too much cymbal riding going on.

That’s an interesting take by you guys. I never really noticed that with Alex. I’ll have to go give him some new listens.
I can say that I always thought the same thing with Dave Lombardo. He’s cruising his ride in almost every single Slayer song. But that’s also what makes him different and makes those Slayer tunes stand out. That ride bell makes them sound pretty haunting. His usual thrasher peers just default to the hi-hat, which has been the norm since probably Bonham.

Alex is the better drummer, or at least he displayed better drumming on his recorded output. But fuck inhated his cymbal sound during much of the Van Hagar era., whereas MC94 sounded killer.

Re: Tommy Lee Vs Alex Van Halen
Well, considering Eddie is a bit overrated I'll stand by what I said. Obviously Eddie was a huge influence on guitar players, but even in his heyday there were guitarists out there who smoked him. So if I had been saying that Eddie was THE greatest guitarist of all time then saying Al wasn't far off would be wrong, but that isn't what I was saying. Eddie was outstanding and Al pretty much was as well. Hence he wasn't "a whole lot different."BernieTaupson wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 10:46 pmThat’s fucking absurd. EVH single handedly revolutionised rock and metal guitar.
Alex was good at keeping the beat.
You can’t really even compare Ed’s influence with a juggernaut like John Bonham, let alone Alex.
Not in any way saying Alex wasn’t exceptional, it’s just that comparing him to Ed is silly.

Thirded. I always liked AVH's playing but he would be lost in the first 30 seconds of Dance of Eternity.joey78 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 8:25 amAbsolutely . You have to be kidding! Dance of Eternity - what is so miraculous about it? I mean really...there is some syncopated rhythm and some off timing - nothing earth shattering.

YOU have to be kidding. It's completely disingenuous on your part to minimize the complexity of that song. What are you gaining from this argument?
Re: Tommy Lee Vs Alex Van Halen
Tommy comes across as a natural talent who didn't put endless hours of work in. I still really dig his groove.
Alex is a natural talent who did nothing but play drums. He is one of the greatest.
Not sure if Alex was ever into complicated music like prog or modern jazz. Maybe he could not play the parts to DT or Rush songs, but I much prefer him to Peart and Portnoy as a drummer. I also prefer Keith Richards to Chris Impellitteri or whatever the fuck his name was

Complex it may be but to think this is something beyond the capabilities of the greatest living rock drummer (Danny Carey excluded) is preposterous.Indy_Rob wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 9:35 amOh come on.
