Did their manager try to talk the VH bros out of bringing in Cherone?

Not sure if you're joking but their manager at the time they hired Cherone was Ray Danniels. Alex's wife's brother, and manager for both Rush and .... Extreme.
After two bombing albums and at hair metal's all time low, getting Cherone to front a classic rock band that still sold multiplatinum was the only way for him to make money from this hasbeen hair band.

I forgot about that. It's been years since I heard the story. Either way, Cherone wasn't highly regarded in Rock circles in the late 90s. The general public only knew Extreme for a couple acoustic songs.

Every week I learn a new story about how fucking weird these guys were.

About the lamest singer you could possibly get for a replacement.

Well, apart from Blaze Bailey. Cherone could actually sing. Looked and acted like a fucking dork, but he could sing.

You could say the same about Ripper Owens. WTF did those bands think, replacing iconic frontmen with boring dorks.

Blaze would have actually been a better pick. He sounds very similar to Roth on that first Wolfsbane album. Cherone was a bad choice, but it was more that the songs were way beneath even the typical subpar Hagar era tracks.

Ripper didnt have the best stage presence, but he killed on the Priest classics, and would have sounded even better if they hadnt detuned.

I didn't like his tone at all, especially when over-singing in higher register on the "Hagar-like" songs. Even in Extreme, his singing works better when in lower register or when balanced with Nuno's harmonies.

BernieTaupson wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2024 3:33 pm Yeah and conversely I can’t even imagine Blaze sounding good on the Bruce stuff even at Steve Harris’ home studio, let alone at a concert. Just an INSANE choice hiring him. How did the record company not hear the depressing monotone dirge that was The X Factor and tell them to go back to the drawing board? Was hard enough for metal bands in general in the 90s, making a piece of shit album is hardly going to help is it.
I think he auditioned with Afraid To Shoot Strangers. Which he pulled off very well. And jumped with him.
