Did the VH brothers need a leader?

Post by Rocker4Real »

Sammy said that the VH brothers needed someone to lead them. According to him, Dave did during his years and then Sammy took over. Some might say VH3 (and maybe ADKOT) was the only album when Ed took the lead? Do you agree?

From everything I've read, it sounds like Wolfie was the leader on ADKOT. He was the motivating force to get them into the recording studio. He was the guy that went through the vaults to find and suggest the material they eventually worked on. From what he's said in interviews, he was also heavily involved in a lot of the arrangements of the newer material (i.e. Stay Frosty).

I think Ed and Randy Rhoads were brilliant riff writers and soloists, but not really songwriters. They needed a DLR/Hagar or a Bob Daisley to shape the songs. Obviously Cherone wasnt really a songwriter either, based off the garbage that was VH3

Absolutely. Somebody posted recently that without Dave, Eddie would've been the best guitar player to never leave his bedroom.

I think a lot of bands were like that. The singer was the frontman that led the band. And of course, management ran the business side of things. Just being a guitar player is never enough.

Yes to the question and no one did it better than DLR.

I think it’s a bit harsh to say never leave the bedroom player though.

They actually preformed on the boat ride to this country and continued to do so growing up.

Don’t piss on the Kings grave like that give him a fucking rest that shit just isn’t so.

Wolfe also was the de facto bandleader on the reunion tour, he put together the setlists.

The little "this fucking kid..." rant he did earlier this year was all we're probably gonna get on that. TBH, most of the reunion story past 2008 was about how bad his voice got, and he's not interested in retelling that tale.

But on the boat ride and afterwards in Pasadena it was their father who pushed them on stage.
At least according to Alex's book.

That totally makes sense now. I was pleasantly surprised at his intense focus on professionally singing, but also a little let down that it wasn’t really Diamond Dave anymore.

I needed a little, “Don’t be sticking your tongue out at me, sweetheart, unless you intend to uuuuuuse it!” Or a, “I’m gonna fuck your girlfriend tonight, asshole!”

Roth and the VH brothers were good together but a mixed bag on their own. Sammy saves the bros asses. No one was there to save Dave from himself. He had two of the best musicians on earth in Steve and Billy, and he couldn’t keep them around. He didn’t seem to have the ability to replace them with anyone worthwhile either. He wasn’t any better of a leader than Al and Ed, and his voice went to shit by the 90s. He didn’t take care of it. It tried to go Mr Bojangles Vegas in 94 and became a parody.

Dave and the brothers needed each other. The VH brothers needed Sammy, Sammy didn’t necessarily need them. I think that is why he is hated so badly by a certain percentage of the fan base.

Gary didn’t need them either.

Sammy certainly acts like he needed them. He's been living off his VH years one way or another for most of the last 30 years.

And it drives him bat shit crazy that he's remembered for being in 2nd rate Van Halen, and it will always be that way.
