DISCOGS ... Who uses Discogs, and what has been your experience?

Post by MetalSludgeCEO »

Who here uses Discogs...?

I recently "re-booted" my page under RLS Records, after a 4 year break.

I am giving Discogs another go... and while the site seems to have EVERYTHING under the sun, in the way of physical product, it seems to be for the die-hard collector more than your casual fan.

What say you?

I have bought and sold CD's on Discogs with no problems, and yes IMO it's more of a place where collectors go/less "tire kickers".

I used it when I went through my cd collection. If it was "worth" $5 or more on Discogs, I kept it. Everything else, I donated & yes, it's 100% for collectors. I see the German version of Tuff's "WCAGA" vinyl is going for $156.84. Do you have any?

It's good to use to find out the probable value of your rare items.

I've bought a few hard to find things on it. Prefer it to ebay if the price is right.

I use it often, not to valuate, but for track listings and other info.

I do have a few copies of the OG Atlantic (European) pressing on Vinyl.

It was only released on Vinyl in Europe... while in the U.S.A. it was released on CD and Cassette, and in Japan, CD only (to my knowledge).

In short, there are 3 CD versions, 1 Cassette, and 1 Vinyl from Atlantic.

I have gotten CDs from there but I mainly use it to see what items are going for when I list stuff on eBay. It's a general indication if an item might be worth anything. It does seem to be for more hardcore collectors and most people on there seem to know what they have so you're not gonna necessarily get a great deal if you're looking to buy.

It says the "Europe" version is only worth $25 & that there are 15 versions of it. Do you have the cassette from Indonesia?

$25 for the CD? Or the Vinyl? I have never seen the OG vinyl for less than $100.00. Usually it sells for $150.00.

I wasn't aware there was one... and have never seen one either.

Prefer Discogs over eBay because the condition of the media is more accurate and there's less chance of picking up a "Very Good" (but scratched to Hell) Columbia House pressing of something that the person paid a penny for in '93 and is asking $30.00 for now. Just got a refund on eBay for an early (pre-mastered) CD of Maiden's "Somewhere In Time" because the seller said it was in "Very Good" condition but when it arrived, it looked like the CD had been found in the gravel on the side of the highway. When I asked for a refund, the prick got pissed and said, "In the description I said it had surface scratches that could be buffed out."

Same. I use it as a musical encyclopedia more than anything.

I have about 35% of my collection in there now (some rare items too). It shows a mid-value of $87,000. Good Lord.

Yeah...a simple, dependable source.
Sometimes I'm looking for old albums that may or may not have ever been released on CD. Discogs usually has the answer for me.

I've bought a lot thru Discogs, I've found rare records for a reasonable price. It may take some time, but I have a few records there on wishlist, about which Discogs notifies, when new one comes along.

Killer resource for finding CDs that you can't find in stores or are too expensive on Amazon. I typically buy a few CDs on Discogs.com each year. Never had a problem with product. I haven't sold anything on it, I'm a hoarder.

If you guys want to laugh at my 38 purchases on the site, here they are:

Really good experience. You can find basically anything and the prices are usually decent even for rare items. Never had a problem with sellers from all over the world.

Yeah I don't think casual buyers use Discogs much as it can be hard to make sense of all the data. Discogs is the hub of all physical media information but their design is super antiquated and hard to navigate.
I only have a small inventory that I sell but my Ebay sales are always better than my Discogs sales.

I use it to buy anything I'm not going to find in a used music store, catalog my collection, check values, download artwork. The layout is a bit clunky and outdated and people have been moving away from it recently because they raised their rates but as of now it's a great one stop resource if you're a collector.
