Who is the new Iron Maiden drummer Simon Dawson, and why has Steve Harris chosen him to replace the legendary Nicko McBrain behind the kit? This video explains why!

Simon works for cheap. What else do we need to know?

If you watch the video above you’d know he has played in multiple bands across various metal genres.

I think they picked him over Joe for his versatility

The other reason they didn’t pick Joe Lazarus - in my opinion - they don’t wants fans drawing comparisons between Nicko and Joe. I have watched clips of Joe Lazarus playing along to Iron
Maiden songs. The last thing Maiden want is people going - “ Joe does Nicko better than Nicko “

I would guess the main reason is that Clive Burr's playing has decomposed a little bit in the last 10-12 years.

So they hire someone who makes people say “Simon does Nicko worse than Nicko”, makes perfect sense! There’s going to be comparisons regardless. If this new guy is going to come in and Peter Criss all the new songs then people are going to tear him to shreds.

The only thing Joe Lazarus had against him was his age. You stick a 30 year old up there along side a bunch of 66-68 year old guys and the frontline looks ancient. Another old geezer on drums and it’s not so apparent.

Interesting video, dude has a huge history...I didn't know he played in Dearly Beheaded and Devilment and the Outfield, that's quite a range of styles.

There are plenty of great/better players out there but Steve & co obviously chose a great person and friend. They are too old (and rich) for any drama these last few active years.

There’s plenty of guitar players who could do EVH like Phil X .
Yet Sammy chose Satch

Never expected to see Dearly Beheaded mentioned on Sludge. I bought their demo cassette via a Kerrang! small ad and very good it was too. I heard they put a proper album out but I never saw it.

I had to check them out when I saw that Colin Richardson (Carcass, Fear Factory...) and Andy Sneap did their album!

I watched the video. Nothing in it tells me he doesn't work cheap. A fine choice. But he will be working for peanuts compared to a name player. That’s just a fact.

You saying money is a huge problem for a band of Iron Maiden’s stature ?

The last time Steve chose a new member when there were plenty of great/better options, but who he announced as a great person and a friend was one of rock's most legendary fuckups.

This guy just hits things though, so it prolly will be fine.

Dammit, I knew I recognized his name from somewhere.
