Is JP Nostradamus really that bad?

Post by EuroJR »

I lost the interest in Judas Priest after Scott Travis joined the band. It was all double-bass-scream-noise after that. Even though the album Painkiller had it's moments. For me JP peaked with Screaming For Vengeance.

I've tried to to listen their much hyped albums after the re-union, but the songs are boring and mediocre at best and as I mentioned, too much double-bass, high screaming noise fulled. Even the high praised Firepower.

I never really cared to listen Nostradamus since everybody's opinion was that it sucked. Was it really so bad?
Maybe I should give it another try. At least it should be different type of album from the rest of the bunch (that was all noise pollution after Ram It Down)

Yes. It’s long, boring and bloated.

I too try to give it another chance after a number of years, but it still sucks. Those instrumentals in between are dull and pointless. The actual songs drone on and don’t keep my interest.

It’s a good album to listen to if you’re sick and want to fall asleep.
Same here. I just made it through a full listen three weeks ago. But i was on a long flight and wanted to sleep. Two tracks in, and the plodding drone of that album had me in dream land.

It's more boring than bad. I can't name a really terrible song from it while there are a few each on albums like Ram It Down, Demolition and Redeemer of Souls.

But the only songs I even remember from this 100 min snoozefest are Prophecy, War and the title track. Those are probably also the best songs.

I have had the album since it came out and couldn't tell you what Revelations, Persecution and New Beginnings sound like.

They would get even worse with Redeemer before they kicked everyone's arses with Firepower and Invincible Shield.

It's not THAT bad of an album. A bit plodding, but that's because it seems to all be mid-tempo, like those latter Dio records.

I can't head bang to it but its a decent album. I listen to it all the time. It's like an album you put on and its background music.

It's boring, but not bad. So, way better than something like VH3.

I'd compare it to Iron Maiden's A Matter of Life and Death, if it went for another 30 minutes.

Wasn't there a guy that listened Nostradamus something like 1000 times or so?
I wonder what are his thoughts about the album now afterwards. Surely he was crazy for it at least in the beginning.

That’s a really good comparison. I fall asleep about 3 tracks into the Maiden album as well.

I shunned it when I first heard it. Then, I edited out all the crappy interludes and felt I was left with a solid Priest effort. Some people get hung up on the subject matter but I don't care too much about that if there are solid riffs and production.
I think if they were singing about the usual Priest stuff (sans orchestral interludes)and it wasn't a concept record, it would've been more readily accepted by metal fans.
I don't really discern the song names and titles on the record but I really dig the song Death. Priest has other slow, dark heavy songs akin to it - such as Loch Ness and some other ones but i think Death is ultra heavy.
Like most Priest fans, I'm glad they are still pulling their weight out there but to me the Faulkner stuff, although fast and heavy just isn't very Priest like. I've listened to Firepower a number of times and couldn't hum a single one of those songs. I guess I should listen to Invincible again, but after 1 listen when it came out, it seemed like Firepower part 2 to me and I dispensed with it

The biggest headscratcher for me (besides them going into Maiden territory with some historical subject) was why, out of everyone, they would pick Nostradamus?

Not Hannibal? Not Archimedes? Not Emperor Nero? Not Kubli Khan?

A guy who made vague prophecies about stuff that then didnt happen? That's the one guy fron history you wanna focus on? Out of everyone?
