How cool was it that Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes

put out Live at the Greek! The band was tight and Chris kills it. How do you take on Plants vocals and not be intimidated? Chris apparently wasn't and I really like Chris on vox here. And, honestly, I was burned out on Zep by this point. But I personally thought the Page/Crowes versions reinvigorated the songs. Anyone else like it?

Here is the drummer recounting how he heard about it from Jimmy and he does an amazing job of telling the story, and the rage he felt learning about it. And a good page impression too! So much so that I held up a microphone up to the audiobook and recorded that part, to share with friends.

I need to endorse this endorsement. This is so goddamned funny to listen to. Thanks to whoever originally posted this here a few years ago (probably you Huey!) I think this is probably my favorite rock memoir ever and this audio clip in particular puts it way over the top.

As much as I love that story and the way Steve told it - wouldn’t you think in reality anything leftover from them Zep days would’ve been used but then? I’d have bought it no matter what (and it probably wouldn’t been better than Lions). But still.

And Chris wasn’t a jerk in that particular story but he was later on saying he was tired of “singing about gnomes and hobbits and shit”.

“Absolutely not true,” he said. “I remember having conversations with Jimmy, telling him: ‘Hey, if you ever wanted to make a record or do anything, I would love to help in any way I can.’ Jimmy’s a brilliant musician, a brilliant person. I loved playing with him.”

Pointing out that he and Page have subsequently jammed on stage, he added: “Jimmy Page wants to write songs for me, and I’m gonna say: “You know what, Jimmy? Led Zeppelin was alright, but I’m not gonna do it’? It’s the most absurd thing I’ve heard in my life.”

That one got played a bit on my local rock station back when it first came out, and it's not bad at all. They aired the lead single off of Plant and Page's Walking into Clarksdale ("Most High") a bit as well, which is solid stuff.

The live album was fun, and boy does Chris sound great on it, but the real fun was the tour. Super sold shows heavy on the Zeppelin and with three guitarists on stage it was a veritable guitar army. A few Zep songs I'm not super fond of really sounded great, the first one that comes to mind is "Sick Again." I had seen Page/Plant by that point but Page/Crowes was much more of what I expect a Zeppelin show would have been like.

On that tour they shared a stage with the Who, so the bands would play back to back. My wife and I did the Crowes/Page show and then the next night saw The Who. Fun times. Glad I was younger then.

I saw them at First Avenue in Minneapolis on the By Your Side tour, with Audley, and he was fantastic.

Audley played with Chris' "As the Crowe Flies" tour like 6 years ago and it was great, caught the show and he and Marcus King handling guitars tore it up..
