Which is the better FILM? KISS Meets the Phantom or KISS eXposed??

Post by Chip Z'Hoy »

In terms of story, plot, acting, etc.

Watching eXposed right now and they're talking about 1973 like it's ancient history. If my calculations are correct, it would be like someone right now talking about 2010.

Edit: 2011? Forgot we turned over.

The world changed much faster in the 1900s. 1959 was nothing like 1973 which was ancient history in 1987. 2001 was also different to 1987.

Now we have been in nostalgia mode for over two decades. Nothing changes anymore, so 2011 feels kind of recent.

I loved eXposed when it came out! The holy grail of seeing Kiss on video in the makeup years, which I had never seen prior to that.

And it had titties!

To think that Phantom could even compare is insulting.

eXposed was $30, which would be like $85 today. To think every video in the universe on youtube now costs $0....

Yeah. If you watch back to the future, they didnt know what Pepsi Free was, and thought squealy guitar sucked. That was 30 years. Now imagine someone from 85 dropped in 2015. They'd have to understand a computer in every pocket, tinder, google maps, every movie/song/book in the world available at your fingertips, etc. That's actually a far bigger upgrade.

However, if you watch season 1 of the office, everyone dresses pretty much like now. None of that hippiewear to disco clothes, to 80s to grunge.

Some things change rapidly and vitally, other things have matured into a settled state.

1985 to 2015, sure. But most of those things were already happening around 1999. They were just called WAP phones, Match.com, Citynavigator and Napster. I know because I used all of them. What we have now are just faster and better looking versions of those.

2011 to 2025 =14 years

ELVIS’ “Heartbreak Hotel” to WOODSTOCK = 14 years

WOODSTOCK to Show No Mercy/Kill ‘Em All = 14 years.

Most music has been stagnant for a while now.

:) :) :)

I thought the song you referred to was recent so I checked when it came out. 2020. 5 years ago. 5 years is also how long classic Kiss lasted. From the debut 1974 to the Dynasty tour 1979....

Your point proved! Nice.

Look at the 60's, it went from "Runaround Sue" to "Gimme Shelter." I think that's a massive leap, going from a two-timer at the sock-hop to "RAAAPE!!! MURRRDERRR!!!"

I think a lot of it is rock music's decline in popularity, no longer being the default genre for teenagers. (I read--maybe here?--the other day about how rock music is the new jazz, where it's working musicians in service of a niche audience.)

I also think rock fell down that trap of "hybridization = innovation," where it's like you can't go any further than grindcore or power violence or whatever so let's do disco thrash metal or ska-techno. So you either do that, with usually terrible results, or go retro.

I was going to mention Greta Van Fleet but they're practically elder statesmen now.

This is a tough one. Phantom has Black Ace but I had to vote Exposed just for the scene where the girl sits in Gene's lap and he says "That's nice for daddy". Me and my old bass player used to quote that line.

I love KIss Exposed. A perfect gateway drug to the classic stuff for a teenage Mr. Freeze in the late '80s. I found it on YouTube out of nowhere a few months ago and couldn't help but watch it all from beginning to end.

I can't recall what I ate for dinner last night, but I remember every line of Kiss Exposed.

I have a theory that Paul is so loose, funny and likeable in this thing because he was gearing up for Crazy Nights and thought he had this huge hit on his hands.

The album tanked, and Paul's been Mr. Grumpypants ever since.

Think you have a point here. He really believed in CN and thought it would be Pyromania / Slippery huge.
He was also 35 in 1987 and "knew" it was his (and Kiss's) last shot at mega stardom.
Funnily enough, they finally became the legends they wanted to be with the reunion. When Paul was almost 45.

Edit - CN didn't tank by Kiss standards, it outsold Asylum and was their last studio album to go platinum. Well if you expect 5x platinum or Diamond it was a bomb but 80s Kiss weren't even close to that. And the tour was a financial disaster.

GVF, active since 2012, just surpasssed Led Zeppelin in longevity (1968-1980).

And you're right about the hybridization. Rap metal was by far the worst subgenre of metal, and the likes of Korn, RATM and Limp Bizkit sound more dated today than Boston or Uriah Heep.
