Is Rick Beato legit?
I think so. I think Rick Beato is legit.

Re: Is Rick Beato legit?
But ... but ... I never heard of him 50 years ago pre YouTube

He is, and he gets a lot of unwarranted hate IMO.
I suspect if he was a famous/known musician or producer a lot of the same people who hate on him now would be talking about how cool it is that *insert famous Rick Beato here* does a show and interviews people and man he knows all the insider stuff it's great!

Re: Is Rick Beato legit?
Well, he never played on a hit, or wrote a hit, and based on his production credits on wikipedia, it doesn't appear he ever produced, engineered or mixed a hit, either.
I mean, I liked the Fozzy and Stuck Mojo albums he worked on 15-20 years ago, and Rick technically has a writing credit on Enemy, but I have to wonder how much Rick actually did, and how much was he just doing what Rich Ward told him to?
But, clearly, people like him for some reason, so I guess it depends on how you measure legit-ness. Maybe he isn't the greatest musician, but with almost 5 Million subscribers, he's very obviously doing something right.

That's the thing. He was there and has the knowledge to boot, and speaks on it. But I see people treat him like if he wasn't famous his knowledge and opinions don't count and he should shut up. Don't think anyone really cares about that TBH. It's the fact he's super knowledgeable and the amount of high quality content he's created over the years, including in-depth interviews withAnthrax442 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:35 pm Well, he never played on a hit, or wrote a hit, and based on his production credits on wikipedia, it doesn't appear he ever produced, engineered or mixed a hit, either.

Re: Is Rick Beato legit?
Not sure what that means. If you work in a recording studio for 30 years, and no one anyone has ever heard of worked on anything there, wouldn't that lead you to at least be suspicious about how much someone actually knew?aznsquirt wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:08 pmThat's the thing. It's a moot point, because regardless of hits, he's managed to make connections and people seem to like him, and he's turned that into an empire. Clearly he's good at the interviewing thing.
But if someone is asking if someone is LEGIT or not, I think it's a fair question to discuss where he's actually at musically.
People wouldn't be asking the same questions of Bruce Fairbairn, Michael Wagener, Andy Sneap, Roy Z, Mutt Lange, Bob Rock, Babyface, Jimmy Jam and/or Terry Lewis, etc. because all of those people have notable credentials a mile long.

Rick has a great channel with great content. The rise in popularity adds to the insecure viewers wanting to take him down.

I think we're answering different questions. I think you took the "legit" question to mean whether or not he has the credentials etc.Anthrax442 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:25 pm But if someone is asking if someone is LEGIT or not, I think it's a fair question to discuss where he's actually at musically.

I took it differently, I took it as a generic "is he a good channel?" kind of question.
I was making a different point. I can't say anything about his credentials/experience other than I haven't gotten any faker/bullshit vibes from him..........

Re: Is Rick Beato legit?
Yeah, after I blew up about the stupid Yacht Rock thing, I had to take a step back and think about what was I really annoyed by. And there are youtube specific things that he does that I don't like (clickbait shit, having a second channel just for edited content, etc.), but a lot of big channels do crap like that, so he's not really doing anything that other people aren't doing. But that's just the medium, you don't get mad at terrestrial radio stations for having to run ads, they have to to stay alive, and if he wasn't as successful as he was, some of those interviews might not exist.aznsquirt wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:33 pmI think we're answering different questions. I think it's kind of like Joe Rogan, he was an absolute hack stand up for YEARS, and the only really notable thing he did in comedy was the stupid Carlos Mencia thing, but he spent all that time making connections, and I don't think there's anyone that could argue he doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to podcasting, even if you don't agree with him politically or find him funny.

Re: Is Rick Beato legit?
His “what makes this song great?” series is the best thing on the internet.
Re: Is Rick Beato legit?
I swear I saw a brief clip of him and Vince in the studio together. They may have just both happened to be there at the same time or something (well I guess that is obvious) because I've never heard him mention anything about Vince. From what they looked like I would guess it would've been between 2003-2010 possibly.
I like him as do many others. Nuno had very high praise for him. That was a great interview by the way. He is getting big names in there. He recently had Dave Gilmour. He's had Hammet, Vai, Satch, Yngwie, and plenty of others. I wonder if Eddie would've ever went on there if he was still with us?
I'm always bummed out after watching his lesson type videos though because in every one he brings up music theory concepts and I wish so much that I could have the ability to hear a song for the first time and know the chord progressions and all of that. It would give you a much deeper understanding of why things sound the way they do and it would give you great insight into a particular artist's style. You would understand what it is that makes you like certain kinds of music which I think would be a huge help if you're trying to write your own stuff. I really envy people with that ability.
It makes me ask the question...does every band that does original stuff have at least one guy that is in the band that has that kind of knowledge? Obviously there are some bands where music theory is clearly not anybody's forte, but I'm talking about real bands. Take for example even Motley Crue. Do you think Nikki knows much music theory? Or Mick? I mean, they must have some knowledge of that stuff.

Dave Navarro did a short lived show a while back, and one episode was with George Lynch, and George swore up and down that he didn't know what chord progressions were or just some ridiculous complete lack of any kind of basic musical technical knowledge. I'm not sure I believe he was as bad off as he portrayed himself, but I also wouldn't be shocked if a lot of guys were in that boat, where they just had some feeling of what sounded right, but would have no idea how to explain why that was.
I've heard it been described by a friend of mine that it feels like you're playing Tetris, and the notes are these shapes that you just know fit together.

I didn’t know he got hate.
Informative, entertaining channel.
Only “negative” is he’s a bit overly earnest and has a tendency, like Trunk, to dumb down over explanations

Re: Is Rick Beato legit?
I've been writing, arranging, recording and producing my own music for decades including most of the Anacrusis stuff and never studied music theory. I am pretty much completely self-taught. I learned over the years "what" I was doing after the fact, but I honestly feel like TOO much knowledge can be a bad thing and often keeps (some) people from thinking outside the box, creatively speaking. The Beatles couldn't read music and knew nothing about music "theory" though Paul's piano playing ability was probably very helpful. I've been adding orchestral elements to my stuff since around 1992 as well and am not a classical guy though I love the sound of an orchestra. Some things come naturally to some people. I wrote nearly all the bass parts in my bands as well and would do higher voicings to bring out melody lines things like having the bass do the 5th above for thicker chords, have the bass do high minor 3rds, etc to accent the chord formations which can get lost with heavily distorted and Standard B tuned guitars and things like that without know "why" at the time other than it sounded good and made sense. I've also done most of the drum arrangements as well. I've always love arranging and recording music.Ryan81 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 6:14 pm I swear I saw a brief clip of him and Vince in the studio together. My dad (who played and sang old country stuff) taught me basic guitar chords when I was 12 and then most other stuff just came from knowing other guitar players over the years, but I never took any lessons at all. A couple years in, he brought home an old upright piano that someone was throwing out and I taught myself the chords on piano. I never learned to play really, but I can write stuff on it without thinking of the "guitar neck" which is kinda cool. I also understand enough about it to use it for sequencing orchestral parts. If I am interested in something I just figure it out as best I can to use it as a tool. In recent years using Guitar Pro to sequence has actually forced me to get a better knowledge of writing note values and things like that though i could never sight-read or anything. One reason I never learned to read music is because I have a very good memory and can usually recall after being shown how to play something once, so by the time I'd play through something I was not really looking at the notes on the paper. There was no such thing as tablature for guitar back when I started playing and everything was all piano/vocal sheet music with chord charts. I remember getting the KISS Alive II song book and trying to figure out KISS songs and not understanding why nothing sounded right. First of all, it was all open chords in flats and sharps because I had no idea they tuned down to Eb live, haha. Tabs make so much sense I am actually surprised no one thought of them a LONG time ago. A line for each string and the number of the fret. How logical is that?

Does it matter if he's "legit?" He's not faking anything, to my knowledge. He makes enjoyable content for many. He either knows his stuff or does his homework. It's not like I'm taking life advice from him or his existence puts food on my table.
He seems likable, and he has some good perspectives and great interviews.

I worked with him for a full day, 2 interviews and was very relieved that he was so cool because I dig most of his content and if he was a dick, I wouldn't be able to watch him anymore. That would be a bummer. The knowledge he has and can recall is remarkable. He interviews without notes.
