Sabrina Carpenter - "Espresso"

We like?

It's locking down "song of the summer" status among people who don't read Metal Sludge.

And as for Sabrina Carpenter, it's actually "Please, Please, Please" that's currently at the top of the charts. "Espresso" would have been number one if it wasn't for Post Malone and Morgan Wallen's duet and one other song:

Someone's song of Summer I suppose. Not mine. FWIW saw her on SNL and nary a live note was sung...

"Espresso" feels a little more in the zeitgeist to me. And "Please, Please, Please" is piggybacking off it.

In Sludge terms, it's like how "Pour Some Sugar on Me" went to #2 while "Love Bites" went to #1.

Well, “Pour Some Sugar on Me” could have gone to #1, and deserved to do so, if it hadn’t been for an equally worthy Richard Marx ballad. Come to think of it, I’d probably love to hear people’s opinions on the greatness that is “Hold on to the Nights”.

Such a terrible song. Such a terrific video. She was a smokeshow with a perfect pair. What fun that would've been.

I like the album version. the single version not so much - taking away the drums at the end. No idea why they did that.

Love it! Cant believe I missed this thread from the summer.

Everyone at the New Years party I went to was singing this song at top volume. As least that is how drunk me remembers it.

It's her "Armageddon It," riding the wave when she can do no wrong.

Later, the pressure will be on for a big follow-up album and she'll give us her "Let's Get Rocked" - something that tries to sound like "Espresso," but has stupid lyrics and isn't nearly as good. When it tanks, she'll release three ballads in a row.

Then, she'll panic and shift musical direction. That's when her Slang era begins.

The hits will dry up, but she'll do okay touring. Skip ahead 30 years and you'll see her co-headline The Stadium Tour with Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo.
