I never thought I would dig a death metal band...

Post by Traxan »

but I have made an exception for Scabbard, a DM band from Czechia. It's traditional DM but has thrash and even groove elements and is damn catchy. I normally wouldn't have posted about them here but the classic American DM thread encouraged me to say why not?

Their last two albums are on YouTube.

Some good riffage and grooves, but Cookie Monster vocals in Czech (?) still sound like shit.

Some of us love the cookies. I've been listening to a lot of death and black metal this month, a friend's trying to get me into the latter but a lot of those vocals are really out there. Scabbard are a nice additon to the DM list. And I know a little bit of Czech so I recognise a few of the words, which helps.

I understand, it's just not for me and I don't really get it. About the only band I can tolerate is Amaranthe, and that's because they have multiple vocalists.

I get that death metal vocals aren't for everyone...

That being said, sometimes they're pretty intelligible and you can actually understand most of the lyrics, such as Entombed's Wolverine Blues (killer gateway album) and most every Death album. Chuck Billy actually dips into that territory quite a bit now.

That Entombed song is pretty good, but the vocals sound more Anselmo-ish to me.

Are there any other kind of vocals in DM than these "cookie monster" or "vomit" style ones?

I recently discovered and have fallen hard for a British band called Countless Skies. A lot of it is Cookie growls but they (I presume it's the same guy) also do clean, vocals - proper singing, not yelling in tune- on some songs. This is one of them, Daybreak.

There were plenty of women at the Arch Enemy / In Flames show I saw last year. Even a reasonable proportion at an obscure DM band's club gig in November. I'd say prog and technical music (Rush and Zappa by reputation, Kings X in my own experience) is far more of a sausage-fest.

That's what they call themselves. See for yourself. https://www.countlessskies.com/ But melodic death metal is a very different beast from the likes of Deicide or Morbid Angel. Kind of like how, say, Saigon Kick and Poison were generally banded as "hair metal" even though they were actually worlds apart musically.

Most death metal is "cookie monster" vocals... there's some exceptions, such as David Vincent's crooning in the chorus section:

Or Carcass's higher-pitched vocals:

(I'm seeing them tomorrow night, can't wait!)

No, they fall into the black metal category (cuz of higher-pitched shrieky vocals + keyboards)
